OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) - Sen. John McCain, the Republican candidate for president, said Friday he would seriously consider freezing all government spending except for defense and care of veterans.

Sen. Barack Obama, his Democratic opponent, said that would be "using a hatchet where you need a scalpel."

Well isn't that nice, if elected McCain will focus even more of our hard earned money towards the war and not fixing the energy crisis, social security, the health care crisis or our economic crisis.

I sure know I must vote for Obama now!

why does everything that this man wants have to be for the war? If he gets what he wants, we at home will surely suffer. .

Um, yah. Stop spending. That's the answer. I suppose that means any kind of oversight on wall street?

What about education, health care, domestic safety programs, etc... would a complete spending freeze really be the best answer?

I'm concerned that McCain seems to have thought of this across the board spending freeze about 2.5 seconds longer than it took for him to speak the words.

Freezing will just create more problems – what will you do after you freeze everything and who will suffer as a result of the freeze.

spending freez on the vets? I thought that is what McCain said. The vets need the funding when they return epecially since tthe majority are coming back home with head injury.

I love how McCain keeps talking about the Vets needing money. No disrespect to Vets, but what about our children? They are the future of our failing country.

McCain's smirk is really bugging me. It looks an awful lot like Bush's.

Oh there's a bright comment, John 'if you have to do things, you have to do things'.

Apparently McCain's strategy is to not look at Obama even once. It is so disrespectful, and it's not helping you John. It makes you seem so ignorant and racist.

A sweeping spending freeze except for defense? Another brash decision that will have sweeping repercussions.

America already lags behind the world in education, are you going to let it fall further behind John?

there is no way to get support of the people. They know war. they get up to go to war not to work. this has been going on for many years, this is a war of religion to them a way to get paid this is their welfair.
    McCain does not get it

Since McCain doesn't have any new ideas to move the country forward, he doesn't need any funds for those ideas so a simple spending freeze would work for him.

It's fine to say that you want to control government spending, but to say that you are only going to spend money on he military and wounded veterans is the blatant attitude of a previously wounded veteran that owns 12 homes. What about the other 99.9% of the country that might need medicare, for example.

Suggesting a sweeping spending freeze proves that McCain not only doesn't have a good grasp on the economy, but despite his time in Washington less of a handle on the overall federal budget and the priorities that are important to our country's stability and future.
