McCain: Palin will do 'fine' tonight

Watch: Sen. John McCain on his campaign suspension, his running mate and the VP debate..

(CNN) - John McCain told CNN Thursday his running mate Sarah Palin will perform well at tonight's vice presidential debate.

"The fact is she'll do fine tonight. She has experience, talent, leadership. She has great inner strength. She has - an ability to lead that's been proven, taken on her own party," he said. "Joe Biden and Barack Obama have never taken on the leaders of their party on any issue. She's stood up for what's right for the people of Alaska. And she will stand up for what's right for America."

The comments come after Palin has faced criticism for her performance during recent interviews with Katie Couric. In the two separate interviews, Palin had trouble defending McCain's record on regulation issues, discussing the economic bailout, defining her foreign policy credentials, naming her preferred sources of news, and naming a Supreme Court case she disagrees with.

Asked if Couric's questions were fair, McCain said he would let the American people decide.

"I know that there have been attacks on Sarah Palin that have been remarkable to me in many ways, but I have total confidence in her. She's very comfortable in her own skin," he said.

McSame, do you ever wonder why you must stand up to your party so much? Could it be that they are WRONG most of the time and the party of Obama/Biden are right most of the time which is why they don't have to stand up to them as much? Obama/Biden08

Katherine Parker wishes you well! Tina Fey wishes you well. And speaking for liberal America, who was afraid that McSame would pick someone with an ounce of competence, I wish you well! You are the best thing to happen to the political process since Jack Abramoff!

Obama Supporter. I think Palin will do great in the debate tonight. I think she cant possibly be as dumb on the issues as she has appeared in the interviews. It was all a plan for Palin to play dumb. Tonight she will put on a great performance.

McCain, if you really care about the american people, you would not have picked this beauty queen. Very, very obvious, you made a very wrong decision (while a presidential candidate)...how much more when you are elected a president??? Although i have been very impressed with Obama, I was going to vote for you, but the moment i heard your decision about this vp pick, i finally decided to vote for OBAMA. Please...you know it in your heart...this beauty queen is NOT qualified to be a VP. My goodness, six years of education in six different colleges before finally receiving a degree in "sports journalism???" McCain, how could you do this to America???

Biden will wipe the floor with this Ms. Palin. She is clueless about many many important issues facing Americans today. She is wanting in terms of experience and foreign policy.
Are you sure your OK, Mr. McCain?? You've been looking older, more tired, and worndown of late. The lies and falsehoods you spit up are getting boring and transparent.

I used to be a supporter of McCain and have decided to vote for Obama as i strongly belive that McCain / Palin ticket will do more damage to US than Bush-Cheney has.

McCain campaign is behaving like a kid. It sounds like McCain has found Barbie (Palin) that they are not letting out of the closet thinking that some other kid will steal her.

    It is getting just ridiculous.

  11. Country First?

John McCain chose a "COUNTRY FIRST" motto, and then
selects a totally unqualified woman to be possible president of the
country. This woman is a threat to our security. How is SHE going to
protect us? The foreign enemy will know that we are a weak target if
Sara Palin is ever allowed to command. John McCain may even be
captured AGAIN while he is asleep in the White House. His "judgement"
after all allowed him to crash five planes and get captured. Those
"red" ignorant thinking states had better think twice before helping
the republican party fool this country again. WE THE PEOPLE are the

No matter how she performs, the Reps will say she was brilliant and blame any negative moments on bias and sexism...and their already-convinced supporters will believe it even if Palin looked like a high-heeled troglodyte. Whoopy-doo. It barely merits discussion.

    Palin does well, she wins.
Palin is mediocre, she still exceeds expectations.
Palin does poorly, she's a victim of the media and/or Biden.

    Good luck Biden.

Oh I think she will do fine also. One thing you can say about Sarah Palin is she learned her "never a direct answer" lesson from her time spent chasing a pagent crown. I'm sure her performance will be a great study in how to answer a quesiton without giving an answer.

    How about those tax returns?
Johnny Mac, any comment on why Palin had yet another secret, private e-mail account that she was using to conduct state business?
Maverick or just like Cheney? Hmmmmm sounds like Cheney to me.
How is one a Federalist and a staunch proponent of state's rights in the exact same situation?
Roe v Wade - cornerstone of privacy - what side of that are you on Palin????

She will do fine, if the only expectation from America is for her to recite a complete sentence. Yeah, she'll do great.

Now back to the real world, with the Titantic of financial crisis, and two world wars, completing a sentence is not enough.

Katie's questions were totally unfair. I thought she should have asked Palin questions more appropriate for her like:
What eye liner do you use? Do you use unleaded gas in your car? What is your favorite brand of breakfast cereal? Have you tried the new Oil of Olay night cream?
