Martin: Raise the bar for Palin and Biden

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/09/27/art.split.gi.jpg caption="Sen. Biden and Gov. Palin will take center stage Thursday night."]
(CNN)–Expectations are high for Palin AND Biden. Many of you read my commentary this week on CNN.com and I haven’t changed my opinion.

I’m tired of Washington journalists continuing to say that the expectations are low, and the bar even lower, for Gov. Sarah Palin.

And the same goes for Sen. Joe Biden.

One of these two will be Vice President of the United States. How in the world do we tell our children every day to have high expectations in the classroom, but we should expect the vice president candidates to not raise their game? Nonsense.

It’s time for Biden and Palin to show America what they are really made of.

Bring it on!

The evangelicals are going to bow down and accept what she says because they can't stand the thought of having a president in office who won't be in their pocket.

  3. question? answer

Can she just answer the question that she is asked?? She keeps going in circles to things that she knows and wants to talk about. I want to hear the answers to the questions that are asked.

I think we can lower the bar for Sarah Palin since she does not seem to know how to answer a direct question. If she were anyone else, she would not be applauded for blatantl changing the subject when asked a question she doesn't like.

Roland, what do you think about the "factcheck"? I think that Biden is more factual than Palin.

John McCain voted against money for the troops...let me say it again. LOL! Biden is breaking it down!

Ask the Iraqis if the surged worked! So when do we finish? Is the victory in sight? She has no concrete examples to support her statements.

Loved the Biden comparison on who has been right and who has been wrong about the Iraq war – excellent point!

Her delivery is awfully like a memorized pageant speech.

Whoops! She appears to be a "little angry!" What's up with that?

    She is not answering questions.

She provides a memorized scripted response that is close to an answer and then as a follow-up she finds an attack that might fit the situation.

    or

she seems to switch back to a totally different subject.

Its frustrating that Gov Palin refuses to answer a question directed to her? I dont get it, doesnt she know ? Thats scary isnt it? And its like she is looking for a slogan to spin out of this, wow i hope the american people see through this.

i think the bar was set too high for Palin, but she is not living up to any bar. She said things like Talibani, OBiden, and Joe Six Pack. I actually had to rewind the debate because i could not believe what i heard.

I dont think either one is going to win this debate because neither one of them are answering the questions and they dont have their own ideas.

What is she talking about??? It's hard to follow the debate when the cnadidate doesn't answer the questions she is asked! You can tell she is trying to regurgitate the lines she has been fed in preparation for this debate. The problem is she has no knowledge base behind her statements. It's painful to watch.

How can you even compare Biden's knowledge with this hockey mom

she has to read her notes this is ridiculous

She does better answering questions once Biden has given an answer.

This is a joke, she is obivously reading all of her answers.

I agree, and they, luckily are. At least Biden is. Palin acts so smug sometimes, bringing up misleading statements like "Barack Obama still doesn't admit the surge worked" even though he did in the last debate with John McCain.

I think McCain's just fine, but I do not approve of her or her deceptive ways.

  21. ON THE "A" TEAM

HI ROLAND! Did Palin say "MAIN STREET IS TOXIC AND IT'S AFFECTING WALLSTREET", at the beginning of the debate?

    OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12!!

    October 2, 2008 09:48 pm at 9:48 pm |
  22. angelam

lacking experience; I say again she is not experienced. She is repeating what BIDEN is saying.................
MCCAIN should have picked Cond. Rice and BIDEN and OBAMA switch places. This is ridiculous.....

Palin isn't doing well. She is getting nasty and her voice is raising. She is reading from cards. Not talking becasue she knows what she is talking about. She deflects questions very well but that is not what the AMerican voters want to hear. They want to hear what she has to say....we are still waiting...40 plus minutes into it.

I am sorry... But I wanted to know if she could just answer the question. She is saying the EXACT same thing that McCain said last Friday!

    I agree Roland,

That's why we don't need to vote for Sarah behind 72 year candidate. Back to Alaska with her to gain some experience and we can talk to her later. The bar for VP should be just as high as the president.
