Report: Palin abused power, violated ethics code in trooper case

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/10/10/art.palin03.gi.jpg caption="Report: Palin ‘abused her power’"] ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) - Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin abused her power as Alaska's governor and a violated state ethics law by trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police, a state investigator's report concluded Friday.

"Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda," the report states.

Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan's refusal to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten from the state police force was "likely a contributing factor" to Monegan's July dismissal, but Palin had the authority as governor to sack him, the report by former Anchorage prosecutor Stephen Branchflower states. However, it states that her efforts to get Wooten fired broke a state ethics law that bars public officials from pursuing personal interest through official action.

Monegan has said he was fired in July after refusing pressure to sack Wooten, who had gone through an acrimonious divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister. Palin and her husband, Todd, have consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing Wooten as a "rogue trooper" who had threatened their family - allegations Branchflower discounted.

"I conclude that such claims of fear were not bona fide and were offered to provide cover for the Palins' real motivation: to get Trooper Wooten fired for personal family reasons," Branchflower wrote.

Sarah is only doing what she thinks is best for her party on the campaign trail (though I find most of it to be insincere and is clearly designed to stur up hate and anger as is evident in a lot of their campaign events) – the same as she did for her sister in Alaska by firing the police cheif who wouldn't fire her ex-brother-in-law. It's what most people would do in a similar situation?

WOW THATS A GREAT STORY. What about Barrack Obama and the support that he gives ACORN all the election fraud that they perform. What is it 13 states now under a federal investigation for registration fraud!!! Oh but i don't see that story anywhere on CNN.

Are we really surprised by the outcome? She would have been better telling the truth from the start. Instead, she allowed herself to be sucked into the spin machine of the McCain campaign.

    Obama/Biden in 2008!

it was obvious to me since this tuesday Obama-McCain debate's night that republicans are ready to replace Palin with Joe Liberman. McCain mentioned Liberman's name few times praising him. GOP used Palin to attract female voters and now they are dumping her as used goods.

Quote from the Court Transcript in Finding #1 regarding Gov. Sarah Palin's abuse of power: The legislation reaffirms that each "public officer holds a public trust" and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is in a violation of that trust. McCain has violated Americans trust in him by presenting Palin as his VP and a heartbeat away from the presidency. McCain is not fit to be Commander in Chief.

Nothing big is going to happen to her for this. The case of her denying wokers comp is a much bigger deal.

To bad she and McCain are so busy inciting their followers to hate filled rants.

CNN, you guys have to say something about this. They are going to get someone hurt, maybe someone in the media, or maybe Obama or his family. They have to stop whipping these people into this kind of fury.

It is pretty sad when your campaign depends on the bigotry and ignorance of your electorate to win instead of your ideas.

Perhaps the reason why McCain's camp has gone so negative recently was their fear of this development.

I knew she was guilty. She truly doesn't quality to be a V.P/President. She needs to pull out form the Election. Go back to Alaska and get impeached from the Governor's position.

Registered as a Republican, voting for Obama/Biden 2008
