McCain aide: 'Turnaround' starts today

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/POLITICS/10/13/campaign.wrap/art.mccain.gi.jpg caption="Sen. John McCain is expected to deliver a speech on the state of the election and the economy, an aide says."]

(CNN) - Sen. John McCain on Monday is delivering a new speech that a senior aide says he thinks "will begin a turnaround for the campaign" as Election Day approaches.

"Sen. McCain will offer a frank assessment of the state of the election and the state of affairs for our country.

"The theme is the new direction that Sen. McCain will take the country through his specific plans for creating jobs, helping those nearing retirement, keeping people in their homes and curbing spending," the aide said.

McCain's speech comes the same day that Democratic candidate Barack Obama is laying out his economic rescue plan for the middle class.

The Republican presidential candidate will "speak directly to people's fears and worries about the state of our economy and the other challenges we face," the aide said.

McCain will also lay out what he sees as the differences between himself and Obama on experience, judgment and courage in the face of a national crisis, according to the aide.

McCain surrogate Lindsey Graham said Sunday that the Republican nominee would unveil new proposals to "jump-start the nation's economy" over the final weeks of the presidential campaign, but the aide said there would be no new proposals on Monday.

McCain has events scheduled in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Wilmington, North Carolina, on Monday.

There are just 22 days left until the election, and according to CNN's most recent poll of polls, Obama leads McCain by 8 percentage points, 49 to 41 percent.

At this point, does anyone really believe that he is going to change people's minds?

Remember the old saying, "actions speak louder than words"? Well, we have seen both candidates in action with the economic melt-down and I choose a calm, cool, problem-solver over an erratic person who can't make up their mind and flails all over the place and then tells me that my financial status doesn't matter as much as his distractions.

Then there is the VP candidates...a choice between a constitutional law professor who is a "regular Joe" or a hockey mom with an abuse of power ethics violation that has never read the constitution.

Sorry, Mr. McCain, like the majority of the country, I am smarter than you think and my mind is made up - you can't change it now.

You are not seriously calling John McCain a racist because he said "I will whip his butt". That is as bad as calling Bill Clinton a racist when he said this whole thing is a fairy tale.

Neither comment is racially motivated and if you were an adult and had an open mind you wouldn't allow yourself to believe that every word someone says is racial.

If that were the case that Obama could be called a racist when he said.."I don't look like the guys on the currency". That could be conceived as racial. I know it wasn't!!!

Stop spreading hatred, we have enough problems without adding a race war into things.

    To McCain and Palin,

I and hundreds of thousands of law abiding and peace loving people like me, ARE GOING HOLD McCAIN AND PALIN ACCOUNTABLE for any negative consequence of the hatred and negative sentiment that you both have been instigating! I can understand if you critisize your opponents on the issues but the fact that Palin who calls her self a christian has spent 100% of her time invoking violence against Obama is beyong my comprehention and imagination! How can someone who hopes to lead USA be so negative and evil, telling blantant LIES daily? Why is McCain and many highranking Republicans not publicly denouncing Palin? Have you people forgoten past historical events? WAKE UP PEOPLE, THE WORST CRIME IS THE SILENCE OF THE OBSERVERS ("GOOD PEOPLE")!!

That sounds about right. Usually when you hit a brick wall, you have to turn around. Unfortunately for John it's too little too late.

My vote is going to Barack Obama and NOTHING will turn that around. Sorry Senator McCain, I'm voting for THAT ONE, the one in the other party.

White candidates who lead in the polls end up losing elections all the time-
    Al Gore
    John Kerry

Why is it racism and why does it have a special name (Bradley effect) when the same thing happens to black candidates?

The media is dangerously stirring up racial tensions where none exist. That bias is dangerous for the country

All you have been doing is turning around up and down, back and forth. You and palin have lost all direction. And our country can not be trusted in the hands of someone that hasn't got it together and doesn't have a clear vision. One step forward and 20 steps backward won't cut it. we need a leader that no matter how small their steps mights be, at least they keeep going in the same direction. One that leads us to a better tomorrow. Obama has that vision, and he has a wonderful level headed lady by his side, and a VP that knows the score.

It is really a shame that people cannot see the real reason why this country is in the mess it is in. It is because of the Bush administration. It was wrong, from the very beginning, when the Supreme Court put him in office. I really cannot understand the OLD veterans who follow what they are told by their " leaders " like a bunch of sheep just because he was in the military and was taken prisoner. Yes, this was a very bad thing to have happened to him but it does not entitle him to be POTUS. The women who think Palin is the answer because she has 5 children. Let me tell you, getting pregnant is easy but being a REAL mother is the hardest job in the world. REAL mothers do not exploit their children to feed their ego. THEY SHOW THEM HOW TO BE GOOD CITIZENS BY SHOWING GOOD EXAMPLES. Does Palin do this ?? I think not.

    Another week, another gimmick.

I bet he goes back to harsh partisan attacks after this week when "startin anew" doesn't work.

Sorry McCain, you're just too erratic for me and your VP is a menace.

I love some of the economic ideas that John McCain wants to put forward. They are original and fresh. Even Obama admitted that John McCains idea on seniors not having to take their Required Minimum Distributions this year is great.

I am a retirement specialist and I have had so many seniors who are fretting because not only do they have to take their RMD at a lower rate (since prices in stockmarket are way down) but then they must declare this money as income and pay taxes on it. So believe me when I tell you...this is a good sound plan.

I also think that helping homeowners (those who were sincerely qualified to own the home) refinance their sub-prime mortages is something that has merit and should be looked at closely.

I honestly believe that people need to stop the fingerpointing because there is certainly enough blame to go around. The democrats did nothing during the last 2 years to try and solve this problem. In fact they condoned it by saying Fannie and Freddie were just fine. Bill Clinton said that the dems were just as responsible.

Let's keep the conversation going in a positive way.

Please CNN print my comments and stop taking them out!

Too little and too late for a turn around. Mud slinging by surrogates while McCain pretends to take the high road isn't working. Palin has been an ineffective running mate because she can't reach out beyond core supporters.

I recently got my 401k statement and I lost very little money. I think people are panicing like after 911 with all that duct tape. I will not be paniced into voting for Barack Obama. I feel he has very little foreign policy experience and could hurt our country.

"After I whip his you-know-what in this debate, we're going to be going out 24/7," the Republican nominee told volunteers at his campaign headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, sparking laughter and applause from the group.

Here's a little advice John. You shouldn't use the word "whip" when referring to a black man. You obviously do not proof read what is scripted for you. Who told you to say something that ignorant? It must have been that "ABUSE OF POWER" VP selection of yours.

Presidential Hopeful McCain: I know long just give respect anymore. Respect is something you get when given. There has not been one ounce of RESPECT given to the American People from the Stand Point of the CLINTONS and GORES and with these people ridding OBAMA's skirt and HIM letting them to lead him to presidency. I feel the lack of respect may keep him from winding up like VINCE FOSTER and Biden running this country with his PILLOW TALKER HILLARY Clinton.... Yes, to me RESPECT IS SOMETHING SOME FOLKS JUST HAVE TO EARN.....
