ROANOKE, Virginia (CNN) - The new symbol of the McCain campaign: the plunger.

As Democratic nominee Barack Obama pulled into the Roanoke Civic Center on Friday, he was greeted by the usual McCain campaign supporters that show at Obama rallies. But this time, those waving McCain-Palin signs were joined by dozens of people waving standard-issue plungers. Some wore white t-shirts emblazoned with "I AM JOE THE PLUMBER" on the front. The protesters all said they were volunteers and not paid by the McCain campaign.

The plungers serve as a reference to the 2008 campaign's latest cult personality, Joe "the Plumber" Wurzelbacher of Holland Ohio. (Joe is actually his middle name. First name: Samuel).

While the plungers emerged in Roanoke, McCain's vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin told a fundraiser in neighboring North Carolina Thursday night that she's already tired of "Joe the Plumber."

"Don't make me say Joe the Plumber, please, in any speeches," Palin said.

This whole plumber thing just makes McCain look more foolish/senile. The guy was/is a total fraud and plant. No wonder Palin wants to suddenly move on.

Interesting! I recognize the road, but not the people. But I am very glad to see young people getting involved in the political process. Roanoke, a historic town, will remember Obama's visit.

I don't get it. What are they protesting with the plungers and tee-shirts? Haven't they found out yet, that Joe the Plumber is a fraud?

Someone should point out to these men that a FAKE plumber was planted by McCain. He's making them look like fools.

Do yall make over $250,000? If so, you have an argument, if not shut up and go home.

Joe the license-free, tax-owing Plumber, that is. The plumber who, coincidentally, happens to be Charles Keating's grandson. The plumber whose dad did time for his role in the Keating S & L scandal. The plumber who earns $40,000/year and would clearly prefer Obama's tax plan - if he were genuinely an "undecided" voter as opposed to a Republican plant.

I'm so sick of Joe the Plummer. He's owes back taxes, Not registered to vote and is not even a licensed plummer.

Yeah sarah I wouldn't want to talk about him either now that he has been exposed as a right wing shill. I am just waiting until we find out he is on the McCain payroll. PS tell Samuel to pay his taxes!

If you vote in a way that doesn't benefit you finacially, but it benefits a system that doesn't benefit you financially, that sounds like taking one for the team, which sounds like socialism to me. Especially when you're taking one for a team your not even on.

"Pinhead", it looks Joe the Plumber is going to be your undoing. If your vocal "pipes" weren't so dirty a plumber wouldn't have had to be called.

Obama is a lawyer, not a plumber. Look for a McCain upset.

  17. Enough with the plumber

Enough already with this political theme. I live in Canada where plumbers make $70.00 bucks an hour, $100.00 for after hours. They are not hurting trust me! McCain screwed up "joes" name and he isn't even a plumber!
Of course these guys are all typical McCain supporters.. or supporters for anyone not black that is! Flush it pals.

And yet she used it again in this morning's rally. Can't not say it, it's by far the most effective thing they have... although I don't think it's going to make a dent. Mr. Obama and his supporters ( including me ) are gonna roll right on forward and make a difference.

I was flush with excitement when I considered the puns possible for this article. With the economy in the toilet as it is. McCain is just plum out of ideas so it is time to pull the lever for Obama.

Do they know that turns out Joe the Plumber will get a tax CUT from Obama's plan? McCain certainly knows.

Maybe all these plumbers can help get the McCain campaign out of the toilet.

So...does any of these men have a "License" to be a plumber, or are they like the real guy with no license, back taxes and debt to shirk their tax paying responsibility????

Funny. McLames campaign is in the toilet and it's gonna take more than a plunger to fix it.

And too bad these people don't understand our progressive tax system. Too bad they don't understand they will get more money back from Obama than McCain in their respective tax plans.

The uninformed voter is really scary in our electorate.

    GET EDUCATED!!!

These are the type of guys who peel off a half dozen McDonald's Monopoly game pieces per day trying to get from the bottom 5% wage earners up to a level where they would not be hurt by McCains tax policies.
