AFL-CIO kicks off largest Get Out The Vote effort ever

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/10/07/art.obama.il.gi.jpg caption="The AFL-CIO endorsed Obama's campaign in late June 2008."]

(CNN)—With less than two weeks to go before voters cast their ballots, the AFL-CIO launched a massive Get Out The Vote campaign Tuesday, targeting over 13 million union voters across the country in presidential, congressional and gubernatorial battleground states.

250,000 volunteers will disperse across the country in 20 presidential battleground states, including some “non-traditional’ key states like North Carolina and Indiana.

The efforts will also target 12 Senate races and 60 House races in an effort to secure a filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate.

The group, which has been targeting union voters throughout the campaign season, says it also plans to increase the volume of phone calls and door to door knocking in the key states, with an emphasis on veterans, elderly voters and gun owners, who are typically harder to contact.

According to AFL-CIO Spokesman Steve Smith, in 2004 and 2006 the grassroots organization had about 200,000 volunteers working in only 13 states. Compared to the efforts in 2008, Smith says they are targeting “more states and more House and Senate races than ever.”

These final efforts wrap up a $250 million grassroots mobilization which began in late June after the organization threw its support behind Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

I live in a small town in Ohio filled with mainly republicans. There are so many Obama signs around it really makes me happy. It amazes me how some of these people could vote for McCain/Palin. I drove by this shack of a house in the country with a McCain sign, if people would just study the facts they would see that Obama would do the most for them. As far as the McCain campaign everytime I see a commercial or hear McCain or Palin speak, I just hear desperation. It's like if one thing isn't working they move to the next....If we are elected we will balance the budget this term...if we are elected we will triple the value of your home in 2 years...if we are elected..we'll send everyone in the America, oh, excuse me PRO America a fruit basket...some of your repubs are so ignorant it scares me. Read the facts!

    VOTED OBAMA/BIDEN

    To Jill American.
In our recent election our incumbent who was a shoo-in was beaten by 73 votes. Over 15,000 of us voted for two candidates who had no chance of winning and allowed a candidate we obviously did not want to win. Don't waste your vote. You don't want to feel like I do.

Excellent, get an organization even more criminal than ACORN to get out the vote. I'm sure there will be no problems w/ their actions whatsoever, NONE.

It still amazes me that people feel it is Bush that is responsible for the banking fiasco. Please read up on the subject before commenting and making yourself look as uniformed as you are.

Carter's dictate to Fannie Mae, (more government regulation!!!), to give loans to people who otherwise could not get them and Clinton's furthering that effort are the cause. Why did they force a path for the greedy Wall Streeters to pad their pockets? How shortsighted can they be?

Now we have a choice to choose another shortsighted individual that will over time make matters even worse. Sure he speaks eloquently but promising what he can't deliver, and if he does, makes everything worse is the wrong path.

I'll give you McCain isn't the best alternative choice, but if McCain goes back to his "deregulation" hard line we will be better off in the long run.

Or you can go with Obama and more regulation with bigger problems because of it? Congress is the problem and God help us if it is a Democratic Congress.

Also I find it hilarious that Biden is already preparing people for unpopularity that will come with Obama as president. Nothing like trying to lower expectations to what will really happen even before elected. Way to go Obama!!!

I just want to say that we all should say a prayer for Senator Obama's grandmother who is ill.

To Senator Obama our hearts and prayers go out to you and your family we sending prayers that your grandmother will recover enough to see you get elected into the White House.. God has plans for you and who better be with you than your grandmother and the rest of your family on that glorious day.

    God Bless

Send prayers of protection to the voting machines and such, that nothing is rigged by those that have done so in the past, that intimidation is stopped, as in years past, and all is fair . . . if this is so . . . we'll have our President Obama 08!

Of course they support a socialist, unions are a form of socialism.

Unions – the reason Made in America means crap. All unions do are drive up manufacturing cost and fill their own pockets with cash.

It's funny how the 46 male for McCain says McCain has raised as money the same as Barack but that's different. Listen, you can't have everything your way.. Just another Republican whinning... Obama just got more people sending money into him and that includes me.

Thank God my 50 dollars in the month of September counted.

Do you know what's going to happen if the messiah actually gets elected?

The first thing he's going to say is nobody is getting a tax break. We can't afford it.

You fools think someone can save you! Especially with a handout!

    DEFEND AMERICA! DEFEAT DEMOCRATS!

    To All of America,

Yes, please vote for Obama. We've been looking for the time to resume our attacks against you. Once you get Obama in office, he'll pull out of Iraq, and along with his pals Pelosi and Reid will send a clear message to the world that America quits, and won't finish the job. That America is a weak whiner. They'll destroy your so-called 'national security', and make things ideal for us to attack you again.

We, the evil-doers of the world, thank you for voting for Obama.

McCain spends his time talking about things the American Public just doesnt care about. "Joe the Plumber" for goodness sakes. Give me a break. We have heard all of their rhetoric, "Maverick"- "Reformer", insuniating that Obama is a terrorist or that he pals around with them. Now they say he is a Socialist.–
Enough is enough and I think the American public has had enough of them. We dont need ABUSE OF POWER in the WHITEHOUSE.
I'm so glad early voting is showing good signs for Obama.
