Palin apologizes for patriot 'pro-America areas' comment

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/10/21/art.palin.countryfirst.jpg caption="Palin apologized Tuesday for making the 'pro-America areas' comment."]
(CNN) - Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin apologized Tuesday for any misunderstanding that resulted when she referred last week to the patriotic values of "the real America" and the "pro-America areas of this great nation."

Democrats and others immediately criticized Palin, alleging she was saying that some part of the country are more patriotic than others.

Palin denied that was her intention in an interview with CNN on Tuesday.

"I don't want that misunderstood," Palin said. "If that's the way it came across, I apologize."

Speaking at a fund-raiser in North Carolina, the Alaska governor said: "We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation."

Palin also said Tuesday that Sen. Joe Biden's comment that as president, Sen. Barack Obama would face an international crisis within six months of taking office points to the dangers of electing a relatively inexperienced person.

"We need to thank Joe for the warning," Palin told CNN's Drew Griffin.

She made similar comments earlier Tuesday at a rally in Reno, Nevada.

At a fundraiser Sunday night, Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, said that after taking office, "it will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. ... We're going to have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy."

His point, according to an Obama-Biden statement issued later, was that "we need steady leadership in tumultuous times, not ... the stubborn ideology of John McCain."

I Have noticed !!! that when ever someone raises the question about whether Sarah Palin is QUALIFIED to be the Vice President and in the event has to step up to the highest office, all her surrogates say the SAME THING except for the honest ones, they say SHE ELECTRIFIES THE BASE have you guys noticed that thats all they have to say about her readiness, and the pundits settle for that answer. Well what is needed in the oval office is not some one who JUSTelectrifies the base, we OUR COUNTRY needs someone who is competent and knowledgeable to run this country. I am wondering if anyone else noticed how thats all they have to say is that she electrifies the base. SO WHAT!!! SHE ELECTIFIES THE BASE THEY NEED TO GET SERIOUS AND SO DO WE THE VOTERS OF THIS GREAT NATION THIS IS NOT A BEAUTY CONTEST, THIS IS NOT SOME TALENT SHOW THIS IS OUR COUNTRY AND I AM TRULY GETTING FED UP WITH THE REASON WHY SHE SHOULD BE VICE PRESIDENT IF THIS IS THIER REASONING SHE ELECTIFIES THE BASE GIVE US A BREAK

Her message and intent came across very clear...her only regret was that she was called on the carpet about it by the media, Democrats, and the American public & rightfully so!

If you have made similar comments you didn't "misspeak" you meant what you said and it made a lot of people angry.

I guess she realized it did not help Michelle Bauchmen aka jospehine mccarthy. moderate republicans are being turned off by this message such as the state sen in wisconsin and colin powell who both endorsed Obama.

HAH. Back down from the comments but we all know you have that thought in your CORE.

That attitude, that big cities are nothing but burn-spots on the map of the "real America," runs rampant through the GOP. You accidentally spoke the philosophical truth of the right wing and now you're reaping the benefits. Deal with it, redneck.

How many times can Republicans just play off these callous, insensitive and ignorant remarks as a "joke"?

They're not jokes. These people know EXACTLY what they are saying and to pawn it off as a joke after the fact is a pathetic and convenient excuse to hide your desperation as you avoid to get swept out of office and out of the American consciousness.

It's nice to actually see her apologize. Wow that I think is a first.
The sad part is because of her wreckless statements you have quacks like Michele Bachmann running around with her own take off comments on that supposed mistake by Palin.
Then you have Congressional Members of the GOP saying that the media should investigate Democrats in Congress for being Anti -American. How shameful are the politicians in the GOP?
Michelle Bachmann should be ashamed of herself, but I'm sure she's not.
I do appreciate the apology Palin~ Now you should reflect on your attacks on Obamas character your lies about Abuse of Power and your racists rallies.~ You still have a lot more to apologize for.

Just because you apologize doesn't change the fact that you meant what you said. I've always believed that the first thing that comes out of your mouth is what you meant to say.

And if Obama is inexperienced, having actual foreign policy experience, education, etc. what does that make Sarah "I can see Russia" Palin???? The VP qualifications should be right up there with the President's in case of a tragedy. Does anyone actually believe Sarah Palin could handle a Cuban missile crisis? Seriously?

    October 21, 2008 04:29 pm at 4:29 pm |

The only reason I will vote for McCain is. Hillary Clinton. yes Hillary Clinton if obama wins Hilary wont be able to run for president in 2012 and 2016 she be to old to run . I will ask all democrats to vote for McCain and if McCain wins Hillary will have a chance to run again for president in 2012 and she will win.
