Palin changes tune on 'feminist' label

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/10/03/art.palin.gi.jpg caption="Palin told Katie Couric last month she considers herself a feminist."]BEAVER, Pennsylvania (CNN) - Does Sarah Palin consider herself a feminist? It depends on which network anchor is asking.

In an interview on NBC Nightly News that aired Thursday, host Brian Williams asked Palin: "Governor, are you a feminist?"

"I'm not gonna label myself anything, Brian," she responded. "And I think that's what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America different, different backgrounds, different … I'm not going to put a label on myself. "

The vice presidential nominee said she believes in women's rights and equal rights. Palin went on to say that when she was growing up in Alaska, she "was expected to do the same thing that the guys were doing."

"I'm not going label myself feminist or not," she concluded, "but I do believe that American women can recognize in me an advocate and a friend. And I want to be in the White House for them."

But Palin gave a different answer in September when Katie Couric of CBS News asked her, "Do you consider yourself a feminist?"

"I do," Palin answered. "I'm a feminist who believes in equal rights and I believe that women certainly today have every opportunity that a man has to succeed, and to try to do it all, anyway."

In that sit-down, Palin told Couric she defines a feminist as "someone who believes in equal rights. Someone who would not stand for oppression against women."

F A I L I N will sing any tune to take advantage of the lucky break (unlucky for McSame) she got when chosen for the McSame ticket.
She will do anything to get what she wants> Just look at "Troopergate"

Sarah Palin is destroying the future of women. This is a person that barely, just barely, graduated from college. If she were to be elected, she would be, could not avoid being, a horrendous failure. That will set women's rights back 50 years.

  4. Just wondering....

"All women should be proud of the Palin/MacCain ticket. When in the history of our country we had a woman fit, gutsy, smart and dressing well running for the vice presidency of our nation? Wake up ladies we now have an opportunity to understand our role in history and she is being lead by one of our hero soldiers."

Fit? Gutsy? Dressing well? She may have that, but not too smart. She is being played by these politics. Its sad.

She is far from a feminist and women should be scared to see her in office.

Okay, so maybe there is so little new "news" today that we are noticing and commenting on the minutia, but did anyone acknowledge the gargantuan polar bear pin on Sarah Palin's designer blouse today? Palin has publicly opposed the addition of the polar bear to the Endangered Species list, stating (and I'm paraphrasing here) there is no evidence linking climate change to impact on the natural world. Palin's stance as an "energy expert" on climate change warrants more attention, but the decreasing population of the polar bear has been well documented. Although it may seem minor in the grand scheme of things, Palin's pin appears to be an attempt to suggest she is an advocate of the polar bear, and perhaps the environment. I find this insulting, and I'd like to add that as a woman, I am not inspired by Palin for this and many other reasons, and I will not feel represented by her in the White House.

I honestly believe that she does not know the definition of feminist.

Also on her "maybe" releasing her medical records, looks like she has something to hide, mental illness possibly?

She is an insult to women.

Its ok. Sarah Palin decided in this same interview that people who bomb abortion clinics aren't terrorists. So just remember, as long as she agrees with your ideology, its ok to blow people up... What the heck is wrong with her.

Someone please send this woman back to Alaska where her views and underhanded sneaky ways are apparently appreciated. She is in no way qualified to represent the lower 48!!

Does Sarah Palin spend that kind of money from the government of Alaska, I wonder what the people of the state of Alaska think of her being so free with the peoples money. I think Alaska should question where the money from the sale of the airplane went and she did not return the money from the bridge to nowhere and other things. She legally steals and it is OK. If you or I steal, guess where we will go.

We're not suppose to know what she thinks. She doesn't do real interviews 'cause they're full of 'gotcha questions'...like, what does the VP do?

Women have always been "expected" to do the same as the guys, the problem is that women get paid less to do the same thing as the guys. So Palin, where do you stand on womens rights? Yea thats right she dosn't care, she is where she wants to be. Well almost.

OK, I've lost what little respect I had for this woman. I never know what's happening with her next. Mrs. Palin can't remember (or figure out) where she stands on basic issues, doesn't know thde job description of a V.P., allows the McCain campaign to lavish her with $150,000 worth of wardrobe while calling Obama an elitist, and then makes sure we understand that Obama "Pals around with terrorists".
What do people see in this woman?!?! And what kind of "maverick" is she anyway? I don't get it.

Sarah has been an energizing figure and force and I'm proud of her! It takes guts and smarts to stand up to the pro Obama media groups. I admire and respect her. She and McCain will make the changes America needs at this time. Only McCain Palin! No Obama Biden.

@ "huriCAIN Palin"...... why such hate? Why such vile? You are an example of the reason the Republicans will lose. You people don't "get" that .......hate is divisive and vile, and we, Americans reject it! Peace be with you!

Palin disdains Feminists.......but...... she has succeeded on the BACKS OF ALL THE WOMEN BEFORE HER, WHO HAVE BEEN DEMONIZED BY THE FAR-RIGHT! Hypocrite.

The FACT IS, that IF Palin was a Democrat VP candidate, the far-right-family-values-crowd would have crucified her for ABANDONING HER FAMILY!

Interesting how the far-right can be such hypocrites!
