Palin changes tune on 'feminist' label

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/10/03/art.palin.gi.jpg caption="Palin told Katie Couric last month she considers herself a feminist."]BEAVER, Pennsylvania (CNN) - Does Sarah Palin consider herself a feminist? It depends on which network anchor is asking.

In an interview on NBC Nightly News that aired Thursday, host Brian Williams asked Palin: "Governor, are you a feminist?"

"I'm not gonna label myself anything, Brian," she responded. "And I think that's what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America different, different backgrounds, different … I'm not going to put a label on myself. "

The vice presidential nominee said she believes in women's rights and equal rights. Palin went on to say that when she was growing up in Alaska, she "was expected to do the same thing that the guys were doing."

"I'm not going label myself feminist or not," she concluded, "but I do believe that American women can recognize in me an advocate and a friend. And I want to be in the White House for them."

But Palin gave a different answer in September when Katie Couric of CBS News asked her, "Do you consider yourself a feminist?"

"I do," Palin answered. "I'm a feminist who believes in equal rights and I believe that women certainly today have every opportunity that a man has to succeed, and to try to do it all, anyway."

In that sit-down, Palin told Couric she defines a feminist as "someone who believes in equal rights. Someone who would not stand for oppression against women."

I know everyone is getting tense with the election, but please keep your comments relevant. Namecalling is going to make us (dems.) just like they are. Don't forget, we're elitists. We know better.

  5. Obama is at teacher and bullies hate school

Funny how she has been so quick to unfairly label Barack Obama as a socialist and at terrorist, and so quick to label democrats or any other people who believe differently than her as anti-american but she deflects any labels for herself and says "that's what annoys" Americans. So why does she continue to spew out that garbage to try to get votes?

I am want no part of her hate, division, anti-american finger pointing, no matter how smart it sounds.

She can pick off a wolf from a helocopter and can bring down and field-dress a moose. Yep, I think those are just the right kind of skills to deal with Congress! Go Sarah!

    McCain /Palin 08!

  10. Sucks to be in a Red State

The thing that frustrates me the most about this particular election is that I am a democrat in a RED state, namely Utah. So when I read articles like these I am completely outraged that anyone would vote for Palin and McCain. But of course you’ve got to have all the idiots in Utah doing what the LDS Church tells them to do and vote for the conservative ticket. Dear God, can someone please help me! I feel like I am living in the twilight zone!!! Doesn’t anyone understand that the GOP party is running this country into the ground! How hard is that to understand?

The fact that she did not turn around and ask someone, ( What am I? Is what's a surprise to me. She has not a clue to what she doing. I've watch enough of this to see it's not going anywhere. After the butt kicking they are going to take on Nov 4th. She will be lucky to get away with her job back in Alaska.

The world is laughing at you America! Get your act together and vote for the best candidate for the job ... not someone who thinks she's a feminist for a minute and not another time. By the way, she's a baggage to the campaign ... admit it. Abusing Governors power by firing the Safety Commissioner and spreading the WEALTH to her kids. Oh .. how about the $150K dolled up expenses to woe Joe the Plumber who earns $250K.

It is so ridiculous. She is the master in labeling as we all know... maverick, pro-America and all the lables she gave to Senator Obama. She is a disgrace to the entire country. I don't understand how anyone could vote for Senator McCain with Governor Palin as VP.

    Obama/Biden 08... can't wait!

I say let them test him ! His ready. From day one, bring them on !!! Joe the senator was just esposing Obama's management style that all Americans should be proactive and do not thinkthat it is over on the 4th.
In order to rebuild the USA everybody is important and should continue to stay on the alert to fix the mess throughout the administrations term. Simple and clear and we got the message !!! Ready to GO.

Everyone needs to read up on her: anti-abortionist (regardless of circumstances), anti-birthcontrol (even for married couples), anti-sex education in public schools (funded by taxpayer money), promotes abstinence only sex-education, creationism over science (and I also consider myself a Christian, and science is real), required women in her home town to pay for their own rape kits while she was mayor...
    The list is long.

This woman has nothing in common with me and I don't consider her "my friend".

Guida, your comment sadly speaks for itself. To answer your question, it was 1984. Where were you then?

Go ahead though. Vote for the lying, unlabelable labeler. I believe it's called a "wasted vote".

I am a female too and I find it disturbing that she brings her kids to work with her, how long has she been doing this! If I bring my kids to work I may be unemployed for it.

Like Trollmaster said, someone like Palin who is against abortion in cases of rape or incest is not "for women's rights." Palin is an utter tool.

A feminist who charged women for rape kits in a state where the violent crimes against women are double the national average? Doesn't sounds like much of a feminist to me?

Palin's wants to be more than vice president; she wants legislative power. Sarah Palin would be more dangerous than Cheney as vice president because she’s corrupt and doesn’t know what she is doing. Sarah has a lawsuit AGAINST FURTHER PROTECTION OF POLAR BEARS so as not to hinder oil drilling in Alaska's ice-filled waters

Palin is not a feminist; pro women she is not. She states she doesn't like labels but she doesn't mind labeling others. This is just more of the hypocracy of the divisive faction of our party whose reign is rapidly ending. We have heard about Joe the plumber , ED the dairyman, Rose the teacher ,Fred the fireman and others which shows just how uninformed and out of touch she is. Not any of these people's income approach 250,00.00 annually. She might as well add Little Miss Muffet, Little Jack Horner and Tinkerbell to this fairytale.

I'm sure they will say anything to win this election. She seems to justify everything based on her personal preferences rather than universal ethics.
