Palin blasts Obama for ties to Palestinian professor

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (CNN) - Sarah Palin thrust Barack Obama’s relationship with a Palestinian academic into the national spotlight on Wednesday at a rally in Ohio - a tactic reminiscent of her repeated attempts to tie Obama to former radical William Ayers.

Palin kicked off her rally in Bowling Green by stressing, as she always does, that “it is not negative campaigning to call someone out on their record.” In recent weeks Palin has used that line to open up an attack on Obama’s tax plans. On Wednesday, she tried something different.

“It seems that there is yet another radical professor from the neighborhood who spent a lot of time with Barack Obama going back several years,” Palin said. “This is important because his associate, Rashid Khalidi, he, in addition to being a political ally of Barack Obama, he's a former spokesperson for the Paliestinian Liberation Organization.”

Khalidi - whose name Palin mispronounced - is currently a leading scholar of Middle Eastern Studies at Columbia University, and was a contemporary of Obama’s while on faculty at the University of Chicago.

Khalidi has been a stern critic of United States foreign policy towards Israel and has accused the country of “occupying” Palestinian territories, but he has denied acting as a spokesman for the PLO.

The Los Angeles Times reported in April that Obama praised Khalidi at a 2003 going-away party for the professor when he left Chicago. The McCain campaign has pressured the Times to publicly release a videotape of the event, but the newspaper has refused, citing the request of a source.

Palin said the public has a right to know what Obama said at the event.

“And the twist here is that there's a videotape of a party for this person, back in 2003, a celebration of him, and Barack was there, and we know some very derogatory things were said there about Israel and America's support for that great nation,” Palin said.

“And among other things, Israel was described there as the perpetrator of terrorism instead of the victim. What we don't know, what we don't know is how Barack Obama responded to these slurs on a country that he now professes to support, and the reason is the newspaper that has the tape, the Los Angeles Times, refuses to release it.”

Palin accused the Times of being Obama’s “pet newspaper” and said the paper would win a Pulitzer Prize for “excelling in cow-towing.”

The Republican vice presidential nominee was joined at her Ohio rally by Joe Wurzelbacher, known to the world as Joe the plumber. It was the first time the celebrated small business owner has appeared with Palin on the stump.

Palin described Wurzelbacher as “a fellow Alaskan” because he once lived near Fairbanks.

Why do I always feel like I need to shower after reading a Palin story?

My fellow posters, remember she only reads the headline not the contents of the story. This is what she will be doing as VP. Do you remember the old saying "Be kind to the people on the way up, because you will meet them on the way down!"

As for Joe... your fifteen minutes have long been up. If you had invested the same amount time studying as you do campaigning, you would have completed your plumbing apprenticeship. Maybe you would have been in a better position to have a big salary, buy your bosses company, pay your taxes, or child support, etc.

Palin speaks about "issues" using derogatory, inflammatory, ridiculing sarcasm that attacks the person from the point of view of their character, thereby personalizing the comment. This is an excessively immature and vicious tactic, reeking of a real inability to intellectually, factually, and objectively debate the merits of a person's stance on an issue. Her chronic avoidance of discussing available pathways around a problem, or discussing various aspects of an issue, speaks volumes about her real ability to lead. What I hear is nothing more than a 12 year old girl viciously attacking another girl from inside a clique. She obviously has not grown up.

Oh-emm-gee... I guess Obama should never have worked at a university with such a professor... I'm glad to know John McCain has the kind of stand up morals to quit any post that might tie him to say, ex KKK members.... Oh wait, I guess he never did resign as a US Senator did he?

Typical Palin politics. The same she used in her political races in Alaska. Attack the other candidate while offering absolutely no substantive proposals of your own. She is also using the same tactic used in Alaska of spring boarding off those who help her get started and the nstabbing them in the back to win an election. She is dumping McCain and attempting to solidify the base behind her for a future run.

Who else in history used the same kind of fear baiting, fear mongering attack politics to gain power? Mussolini perhaps, Hitler. The common thread here is to incite fear and hate into people's hearts in order to take advantage of the same for poitical gain.

Yes, I said it. Palin's tactics are the same used by Mussolini and Hitler.

Joe Wurzelbacher is not a small business owner. People need to stop treating him like that. He doens't have a license, so he can't even own a small plumbing business if one was handed to him. Even the "real" people the McCain campaign professes to be about are being misrepresented by the very same campaign. The unfortunate part is if you told this to Palin she would think you were complimenting her as "Miss Representation".

Your fabricated, distorted and blatant lies will NOT work this time. We want no more of these freaks in office. Palin and McCain are a disgrace to the american flag. I am quite happy that McCain refuses to wear a pin of the American flag, he doesn't deserve to.

Sarah's connections to the Alaska Independence Party is much more disturbing to me, than Obama being at one party with a well respected professor on Palestinian Issues.

Remember this simple math folks: POSITIVE = WINNER & NEGATIVE = LOSER (period)

Again look "who's talkin'" here – on this subject – her favorite to pick someone who doesn't look like her and make a big deal out of it – just to put the "FEAR" into us all.

Not buying it. These people "cry wolf" too many times. (not to mention shooting at the poor beasts from airplanes" great sport I'd say.

Do the Republicans know no bounds for hypocrisy. Obama has thankfully had the morals to stay away from Todd Palin being a secessionist, McCaine being an actual friend of Gordon Liddy, McCaine having met Pinoche without preconditions, Sarah Palin being praised by an evangelical lunatic minister from Africa that orchestrated a witch hunt, and McCaine's involvement with a hate mongering anti-gay group. For some reason, McCaine is willing to drag out all of this old nonsense that has little to do with Obama when he is the only one running that has an official reprimand for his involvement in the Keating 5 scandal. The Republican ticket is just a giant closet with heaps of skeletons.

Instead of blasting Obama she needs to be working a 9 to 5( like most good mothers), and taking care of her kids( all 5 of them) instead of continuing to make a complete fool( donkey) of herself......

It is always something new with Sarah Palin. One week Obama is too inexperienced, another he is a socialist. It IS negative campaigning when the only way you can supprt your party is by putting down the other. Why is she not speaking of the wonderful things she wants to do for the country? It is because she has no clue to run a country. And by the way, Obama is FAR from inexperienced. He was the first African American President of Harvard Law Review, taught ten years at Harvard in constitutional law, and was a state senator and the third African American senator to be re-elected... And that is just to name a few.

  18. Republicans for Obama

McCain himself has an extensive relationship with Khalidi, including providing his group with hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money. In the 90's McCain was the chairman for International Republican Institute , McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars. She should check the facts before she goes out to give her attack speeches and end up looking like an idiot.
Thank goodness there is only 6 days left and we won't have to hear any more negative attacks from McCain or Palin.

Learn about this man Mr. Obama. Do NOT just go along with the promise of hope… I know we all need things to be better. Obama is not the answer he promises:

    From Audacity of Hope:
"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

    From Dreams of My Father:
"I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."
"I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race."

There is no innocent side in the Arab-Irsaeli struggle; Israel is just as responsible for the situation as the Arabs are, and yes, Israel is occupying Palestinian territory.

To call that a "radical" position shows how much is wrong with our foreign policy.
