NAACP stands down over Virginia election prep

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/10/30/art.palinnv1030.ap.jpg caption="Gov. Sarah Palin campaigned in Fredericksburg, Virginia on Monday."]
(CNN) – The Virginia NAACP’s lawsuit alleging lack of sufficient preparation for Tuesday’s election is on hold, CNN has learned.

The civil rights group has withdrawn its request for a preliminary injunction that would have required the federal government to step in and take over administration of next week’s election - including extending voting hours and reallocating voting machines.

The request for federal intervention was withdrawn after Virginia state officials provided new information about its preparations for what is expected to be record turnout across the state next Tuesday.

In a press release issued Thursday, the Virginia State Board of Elections detailed significant increases in resources since the last presidential election.

“Since 2004, nearly 300 additional polling places have been added or changed” to help alleviate long lines, the statement said. The state is also set to deploy 30,000 people to act as poll workers or alternates and, since 2004, Virginia has increased the number of voting machines by 77 percent – from 5,989 to 10,600.

Virginia has already received more than 310,000 absentee ballots for next week’s election, a figure that represents more than the total number of absentee ballots cast in 2004, according to the state board’s release.

The Virginia NAACP has not formally dismissed its lawsuit but the group tells CNN it has no plans to pursue the case. The group filed the lawsuit earlier this week out of concern that areas in the state with significant African-American populations had not been allocated sufficient resources to have a smooth voting process next Tuesday.

Laughable. Presidential elections are every 4 years. This is hardly new news. How could you not be prepared for it knowing that already?

Too many folks have tried to discredit Obama; people are smarter than the media give them credit. That gentlemen that you had on your show was lying and anyone who was watching know that he was lying, because when you asked him to name other persons that Obama has hung around with, he couldn’t. This confirms the desperation that the McCain campamng will go to discredit Obama. This does not make McCain trustworthiness look strong.

    To "My Vote!" who said

    "Voting is very personal."

Yeah, but posting about here is not. If you've "done your research" and are "comfortable with your findings" regarding Bush, then you either (a) failed to do adequate research and are still uninformed/misinformed or (b) are too dumb to know what you found. And sorry, but that 23% you say still support Bush you quoted sounds awfully similar to the 23% of the Texas population that still thinks Obama is a muslim.

  8. Go and vote for 4 more years of the same thing

Please vote for four more years of job losses, home foreclosures, wars, divisiveness, lies, inflation, and no healthcare. I mean really 8 years was not enough. Thank you republicans for making america so great.

    NOT...

Anyone who supported The last eight years of policies should not be allowed to run for president and should be kicked out the senate. Namely John McCain.

The Sarah fans complain about unfair coverage, but if Biden's wife belonged to a group that wanted to separate Alaska from the United States, it would the main talking point on Fox and Rush.
Sister Sarah (in the movie) went to Cuba for dinner, and our Sister Sarah could see Russia from her window.
Both were bad experiences, but Palin will be remembered as the McCain failure of choice.

The tension "mounts" as the election draws near...looks like a "restless hen house" when it comes to counting the chickens...and everyone wants to make sure that the "weasels who said good morning to the chickens before dinner" are no where around come Tuesday.

Why do you have a photo of Palin with this article?

Oh, I get it. She was in Virginia once so she knows all there is to know about voting machines...right?

Did you go to her for her "expertise" on this matter? What's up, CNN?

Is there something wrong with John McCain's jaw, it looks like he has a big walnut on the side of his jaw. Maybe it's growing from telling too many lies.

The goal of the NAACP is not to make sure every vote counts but rather to get Obama elected. Period.

The NAACP is involved in everything. They should just keep their mouhts shut! They are a big proponent of racism in America. They creat racism! Wonder what they will do about the NAWP?

Yeah, why is Gov. Palin's picture on this article. I am glad that Virginia has responded to the NAACP's suit and have allocated the resources for maintaining a fair vote. It appears from other comments in response to this article as well as others that people are having a hard time focusing their responses. Must be getting close to election day. JUST REMEMBER GET OUT THERE AND VOTE!!!!!!!

We are going to have to watch this election very closely. There has already been some cheating going on in the early voting polls. Basically, this election is going to come down to race and wealth. If you are a racist, you are not going to want a certain candidate even though he has a better plan for you individually. Wealth is going to be the second item on the table. If you are going to vote, vote based on your wealth. If you make over $250,000/ yr. McCain is your man. Under $250,000/ yr., OBAMA/BIDEN. I would also like to know if the Skinheads out of Bells, Tn are actually going to do any jail time for their plan that they were not smart enough to carry out or if they are going to be given a bus ticket to an Obama Rally.

Obama is such an intelligent man that he can sit down with anyone no matter where they are from and have an intelligent conversation. That doesn't mean he agrees with everything they say but by listening to what they have to say he learns pro and cons. That is why he can sit down with any leader from another country and talk. He will make a very good president like we have never had.

They'll be back with their lawsuit as soon as McCain wins, which he is going to do despite everything we've been told to believe.
