Obama aide: Timing of news about his aunt 'suspicious'

(CNN) - Barack Obama’s chief strategist said Saturday that he thought the last-minute appearance of stories like this weekend’s news that the Illinois senator’s aunt may be living in the country illegally would make people “suspicious.”
The Associated Press has reported that Zeituni Onyango, a native of Kenya, has been living in Boston despite losing an appeal for asylum four years ago. Obama’s campaign issued a statement earlier Saturday that the Democratic nominee “has no knowledge of her status but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws should be followed." The campaign also said it would return $265 in donations from Onyango, who is not legally permitted to donate to Obama because she is not a U.S. citizen.
CNN has been unable to independently verify the aunt's immigration status.
On the campaign trail in Nevada, Axelrod said the timing of the report might raise a few eyebrows. "The campaign issued a statement on that," he said. "And I don't have anything more to add to it, other than I think people are suspicious about stories that surface in the last 72 hours of a national campaign... I think that they're going to take that, they're going to put it in that context."
House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers of Michigan questioned both the timing and the source of the news Saturday, sending a public letter to Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff requesting an investigation.

I think this is ridiculous. Who cares. I think the fact Sarah Palin's new son-in-law dropped out of HS , shows the family does not put much value on higher eduacation . Most families would have done everyhting in their power to make sure he graduated. Also, what about this multi-millions dollar house she built using the same contractor that got the bid for her hometown sports arena. Why isn't there more light being shone on stuff like this.? Enquiring minds want to know..

Obama's comment that all appropriate laws should be followed is very legal, but very cold to me. This is a blood relative, and the response is only "I didn't know, do what you legally have to do." No expression of sadness that she is going to be deported, or that he was unable to help her get citizenship (had he known)?
Every time something like this is brought up, Obama distances himself from the person. He has yet to stand by any relationship that comes into question – Wright, Ayers, Rezko, Khalidi – he always barely knows the person or had no idea what was going on. Is he going to turn his back or distance himself from world issues if he receives criticism from other nations? Being President involves taking a stand when things get tough, and he hasn't proven that he can do that.
And McCain's daughter is pro-choice. I'm sure any of the few people upset about Obama's aunt will overlook any issues with McCain's family.
Also, what are the odds that some of the McCain family fortune WASN'T gotten with the sweat of illegal immigrants? Unlikely.
