Soggy ballots challenging scanning machines in Chesapeake, VA

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Virginia voters faced rainy weather early Tuesday morning while waiting to vote."]
(CNN) – Some voting machines are not working properly in Chesapeake, Virginia because of wet weather, according to voters and the State Board of Elections. Spokesman Ryan Enright confirmed the rain is throwing a wrench in the works in a few places that use optical-scan paper ballots.

He said ballots were getting soaked as water drips off wet voters walking into polling stations. That makes the scanner unable to read a ballot.

The Virginia State Board of Elections is encouraging all voters to dry off before filing out ballots to avoid problems.

And to solve the problem of wet ballots, the polling station is collecting them in a secure container next to the polling machine. Once dried, these ballots will be tabulated by officials, Enright said.

He added that while this will mean a longer processing time for election officials, it should not affect voters and their wait time.

Republicans are very humorous with the blame shifting when it comes to the reason why they will lose the election.

We should "expect" someone to give us a towel before we vote to dry off because we are turning socialistic and need someone to give us everything rather then doing it ourselves.

    Troopergate investigation

Hmmmm, let's see....these are people who would be reporting to her when she losses this election and heads back to Moose town. Of course they are going to clear her from any wrong doing...otherwise, they are canned Mr.Noah which means, they WILL GET FIRED!. Makes sense....Think outside of the box, do not be narrow minded...

    It's ridiculous!

The system should be the same for everyone, across the country. More polling stations to reduce the lineups, paper ballots and a pencil. Cripes! Why does this have to be so difficult?

What Mccain and his aides don't realize is that this "organizer" has organized the tightest political machine ever and he started months and months ago not weeks ago!!!

Obama knew from the beginning that theonly way he would have a chance was to get more democrats to vote than has been the case in recent years... just the shear numbers will get him in! and he has known this for a very long time! He's a great strategist! He's a great mobilizer! he's a great inspirator! Amd most of all he's a great UNITER!

Obama the next President of the "UNITED" States of America!

Why would a story about Palin being found to not abuse her power as governor replace any bit of Election Day coverage? The American people don't care about Troopergate right now dunce, the polls are open and they are busy voting. I think the obsession with the misdeeds and biased reporting of the media can take a back seat today when people are actually casting votes–but then again, I guess it's never too early to start making excuses if your guy doesn't win.

Yes, there are problems with our voting system, and I think it would be better if we could standardize the system and ensure that there is more trained staff to help things run smoothly.

But, as with anything, when millions of people are involved, there are bound to be some mistakes. I wish people would not overreact with crazy accusations like "Republicans are trying to fix the election!" or "The liberal media made it RAIN so the ballots would get ruined!" Please, chill out and be rational.

That is ridiculous. I do not understand why a country that can send men to the moon cannot hold a fair election. Truly pathetic. And the republicans will stop at nothing to suppress votes.

Actually, I read about that right here, yesterday. They posted the finding immediately. Now, keep in mind that the bipartisan legislative committee found her actions unethical and it was a three person appointed board (two appointed by Palin herself), that did not find problems with her conduct. I will take the bipartisan finding over the partisan one any day, any issue

Barbara – Who's trying to steal Virginia? Virginia is traditionally a republican state. If anyone is trying to "Steal" it, its the Dems. unfortunately, corruption is rampant on both sides, and any fair-minded individual knows that. Remember the dems handing out cigarettes to homeless people in 2000 to get them to vote. What about ACORN? Pathetic. To pretend like its one-sided is at best – naive, and at worst – partisan, divisive, and ignorant. Wake up people.

I have family that away, and not to long ago people got fliers saying Go white don't go for Obama and they called the FBI in and everything... So I'm really not shocked that something like this has happened....

Before you go and defend Sarah Palin please understand that the board that 'cleared' her of wrong doing was one that she chose to have take up the matter. Ironically, the board that was created by Alaska's bipartisan legislature saw things differently.

They should throw out the state of Virgina since there are so many problems going on. Elementary schools can run a better voting system when little kids run for president, vice president, etc... Why is it so complicated for the Adults. I guess we can learn better from kids sometimes!!

This is idiotic –a paper ballot and a number two pencil is foolproof technology. Shoot, stick an eraser on the pencil and you have an automatic undo button if someone makes a mistake.

Is this so hard to understand?

Oh, wait, but that would mean the GOP would have to hand erase all those ballots to steal an election and the voting machine companies would not be able to donate millions of dollars to GOP candidates.

    Never mind.

Is it really that hard to make a working voting machine? This is the country that sent people to the moon almost FORTY years ago. Maybe it'd be easier if you stick with scantrons, or even better, paper ballots.

Yeah she was cleared by a panel appointed by her predeccesor, the bipartisan panel found her guilty of ethics violations, it doesnt matter we have all come to our conclusion about sarah palin and its a vast majority a negative opinion.

Hmm. While Sarah Palin may not have done anything illegal, she did behave in an unethical manner. So she was not totally cleared of any wrong doing.
