Palin camp fires back over claims by some McCain aides

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/11/06/art.palin07.gi.jpg caption="Palin has been the target of tough leaks from some former McCain staffers."]
(CNN) - The war of words between supporters of each half of the Republican presidential ticket escalated Thursday, as a spokeswoman for Sarah Palin called charges circulated by former campaign aides to John McCain ‘sickening,’ and the Alaska governor herself said the advisers spreading the rumors were ‘small, evidently bitter’ people.

Former McCain campaign aides have been sources for a string of embarrassing stories about Palin that have become public since GOP defeat Tuesday night, including the charge that she spent thousands of dollars more on clothing for herself and her family than the $150,000 that has been reported.

There have also been reports of a somewhat distant relationship between John McCain and his running mate.

“This is so unfortunate and, quite honestly, sickening,” said Palin aide Meghan Stapleton in a statement. “The accusations we are hearing and reading are not true and since we deny all these anonymous allegations, there is nothing specific to which we will respond.

“We have the highest regards for Senator John McCain. Governor Palin was honored to be chosen as McCain’s running mate. And as Governor of Alaska, Governor Palin looks forward to working with President-elect Obama on securing energy independence for America.”

Back home in Alaska, Palin herself said she would not respond to individual accusations.

“If they’re an unnamed source, then that says it all,” she said. “I won’t comment on anybody’s gossip, or allegations that are based on anonymous sources. That’s kind of a small, evidently bitter type of person who would anonymously charge something foolish like that, that I perhaps didn’t know an answer to a question. So until I know who was talking about it, I won’t have a comment on false allegations.”

I guess the question I have today is "Where was John McCain's head"? Did he even consider the fact that the media would vet this lady? Or did he believe they could just give her talking points and send her out and back door her into the White house. Did she ever return the close to $200,000 dollars in clothes? If I were a republican I would be real upset. I have never seen anything like this before in my life. Thanks God and Grayhound their gone.

This is what happens when you don't properly vet someone for VP.

Better choices for McCain: Whitman, Pawlenty, Romney, Ridge, or even Lieberman.

Who cares about the base? One of those choices would have been the race much closer by swaying independents to McCain. The base would have been out anyway.

McCain thought with his little head and not his big head and he got what he asked for with Palin.

Leave Sarah Palin alone. The GOP used her and she used them to get whatever she wanted included a brand new wardrobe for her family, plus international name recognization (for bad or for worse). She is back in Alaska. As far as I am concerned, that's all that matters. John McCain picked her for VP like a man picking up a woman on a one night stand, and we all know how that turned out. So people, move on. The election is over.

it dosen't matter if you make a comment on these issues or not mrs. palin, we've heard enough of your comments from your own lips, that tells us that you were not qualified to be in any form of government let alone vp.

More ugliness from the GOP. Don't get me wrong...I really couldn't stand Palin from day one, but this is really ridiculous. I've always considered myself an independent, but this election has definitely pushed me towards the democrats. The republican party is a disgrace.

Here's the problem for Gov. Palin. Claims that she is ignorant, that she was hateful to staff, and that she thought that anyone in the world (except Todd and Joe the Plumber) would want to hear her make a concession speech are all perfectly in line with what the American public saw during the campaign.

Go back and look at the Couric interview. Look at the debate (particularly when Biden is talking – look at her face) and then listen closely to all that she does not say. Look at the body language between her and McCain during the last weeks of the campaign, and especially during McCain's concession speech. This woman is completely self-absorbed.

Folks, she is so ignorant, she actually believed she was Vice Presidential material – still does. She didn't even have the grace to admit that she might, just might have cost McCain some votes. Good luck Alaska. You've got a real winner! And, horrible as it seems, let's hope Stevens DOES go back to the Senate, because if Palin has to nominate someone to replace him, you can bet your bottom dollar she'll nominate HERSELF!

Has the RNC lawyer conducted the "family clothing" audit yet? Hurry up before she gives them to her family!!! BTW, Alaska residents keep that stupid bag of crap you call a governor, and bury her under a large chunk of Arctic tundra–never to be heard from again!!! Please save us all from this fool disguised as a politician!!!!

I'm not a Sarah Palin fan, but hears a little advice for her. Write a book and title it My Side of the Story. Forget about being President of 2012, she can make millions by selling a book and she get her point across at the same time.

I am confident she can only learn more. She knew what a continent was right? Maybe not, it is only gossip after all.
