(CNN) - President Bush and first lady Laura Bush welcomed President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, to the White House on Monday afternoon.
Bush and Obama held a private meeting in the Oval Office, while the first lady gave the incoming first lady a tour of the residence.
The president and president-elect walked together along the colonnade by the Rose Garden before entering the Oval Office together. They briefly waved to reporters along the way.
Obama and Bush were not expected to speak on camera following their meeting.
An aide to Obama said they were "going to let the pictures speak for themselves."
The two met in the Oval Office for just over an hour. When President George H.W. Bush hosted President-elect Bill Clinton after the 1992 election, the two talked for nearly two hours.
Monday's meeting was a historic formality, but it was also a time for serious talks. It marked the first time that Obama has visited the Oval Office.

The only time I've seen Michelle dress appropriately is the dress she wore on The View, and one interview that she did wearing a purple blouse. The other dresses are awful. Hillary used to wear plaid, but she learned very quickly that that was not a first lady look. Unfortunately, Michelle will have to learn. I just hope she learns before the inaugural.
Michelle definitely has a brain, but no sense of style.
Anyone concerened that Michelle Obama doesn't have the style to be first lady only need look at this picture!
You look fabulous darling!!!
the way nobama got into the white house was pandering to the american public about "change and hope", preying on the weaknesses of america, e.g., weak economy, high unemployment rate, bringing of new jobs. he ended up getting over 65 million simple minded people to vote for him, disgusting and nauseating
Bush will be the biggest lame duck President in U.S. history...he should just resign now and let Obama take over today.
It is a good thing that picture was taken AFTER the election!
Thank God for the Constitution. Thank God for the founding fathers. This is picture perfect of what a democracy is.
She need a nice royal blue dress with a jacket. She's got time to learn, don't worry.
Every president, no matter how bad they are, always contribute something to our society. Bush will be appreciated in the future.
Very regal and dignified. Guys, let's have some common decency here. Was never a Bush supporter but let's not kick a man when he is down. He must know his approval rating and maybe he tried his best and failed. He also had some good things going on for him. Let's not forget, he was faithful to his wife (unlike Clinton) and displayed great affection to his daughters. As well, I never heard Laura Bush badmouth others even if she could have benefited from it, unlike Cindy MCain who mouthed off at Michelle. Bush is on his way out, allow him some dignity folks. This is what Barack would want us to be.
Michelle dresses just fine, leave her alone.
TO the idiot who says he thinks michelle should wear cherry red- i is dimwit. Anyone who has dark complexion should wear bright colors, just like pale skin should wear warm- see laura- you don't know anything- michelle has been wearing bright colors for months-get a new hobby amy
Michelle should look up the word understated.
What a nice picture!
make that 53% ^____________^
Laura looks dowdy in brown. Who wears brown?
To all those who hate Bush, stop projecting. How would you like it if someone calls you stupid for all teh mistakes you have done. MS. Obama is ugly on the procss of becoming elegant!!!

It's to late, that has happen under bush's watch. You should crawl out from under your rock more often.
Barack looks nice. Michelle is too flashy.
I think Michelle would have looked nice in a nice camel color or bone white. Well, you can't hit it out of the park every time.
Obama will make a great president.
Is it really that much of a problem if the future First Lady looks "too flashy"? Jesus. There are more important things to focus on.
Well, at least Michelle's finally glad to be an American. What's up with the tight dress.
The Republicans are crazy if they think they can make a bid for the big house in 2012. You are a party of crash and burn politics. You need to redefine yourselves. That is going to take a long time. You cannot repair that damage you did in this past election overnight. Your personal attacks had better be a thing of the past, or you will never see the inside of the big house again. Democrats had better come across. I don't care who left you this problem, it is time to fix it. While it won't come overnight, you can go a long ways to getting a start on it by reaching across the isle. You must make the move to the Republicans. It is time that both of the parties start thinking of us first and party last. I did not vote for any of you to take care of the dam party. Of course, if the Democats screw up, maybe it will open the door for a 3rd party. That is what we need, to keep both of the other two in line.
It is time for BOTH parties to grow the -– up and do the job they are hired to do.
Anyone notice how Michelle is trying to keep her distance from Laura? I would too. I wouldn't want any of that stupidity rubbing up on me neither.
