(CNN) - President Bush and first lady Laura Bush welcomed President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, to the White House on Monday afternoon.
Bush and Obama held a private meeting in the Oval Office, while the first lady gave the incoming first lady a tour of the residence.
The president and president-elect walked together along the colonnade by the Rose Garden before entering the Oval Office together. They briefly waved to reporters along the way.
Obama and Bush were not expected to speak on camera following their meeting.
An aide to Obama said they were "going to let the pictures speak for themselves."
The two met in the Oval Office for just over an hour. When President George H.W. Bush hosted President-elect Bill Clinton after the 1992 election, the two talked for nearly two hours.
Monday's meeting was a historic formality, but it was also a time for serious talks. It marked the first time that Obama has visited the Oval Office.

@ Tim, who asked "Some of the highly partisan idiots on this site can't ever find anything nice to say about George W. Bush. What exactly did he do today to warrant the snotty comments?"
He woke up.
What an amazing moment in the history of the United States of America
May your God bless Barack Obama
Republicans are such hatefull people, remember "One Nation Under God"?
Hey Charles from Atlanta ...
Get a life ...
QUOTE FROM 'NYC HOMELESS CONSERVATIVE':
"Every President in my lifetime has one thing in common-they are wealthy. You really think they can relate to the common man!!"
– – – – –
NYC you need to learn the facts. Until Senator Obama's recent book sales, he and Senator Biden were two of the five poorest senators. By comparison to the McCains, the Obamas owned and drove just one Ford Escape and they have one home. While the McCains have 9-homes and 13-vehicles. It was not until Obama's recent books sales that he finally crossed the million dollar mark in 2007. So NYC, what is door definition of wealth? Making $100,000.00?
My opologies ... to Charles
Debbie ... Get a life !!!
SIDESHOW:
HOLY SMOKE: I just saw on TV that over 70% of Republicans think she is qualified to Lead them to White House! She is the most brilliant able conservative than 56 Million who voted JMc.
HOLY COW!
Lets Vote Palin to become Republican Leader. All should participate in this patriot noble cause for the survival of human race. And Moose.
PALIN FOR WHITEHOUSE AGAINST SOCIALISTIC TERORRISTIC AMERICANS PART OF PRO-AMERICA!
GO MOOSE.
Good riddance to the Bush's!!!
Look how tall Michelle is!!! Oh my Gosh. I'm beginning to think that her real name might be Lola. Didnt sting and the Police sing about her when she was younger?
You guys are nuts...that dress would look great on my floor.
And the backstabbing will now begin on the Republican side. Poor Bush. Nobody seems to like him.
What is one nation under god a suggestion?
the first thing "w" can show "barack" being both men is how to get your whitehouse mistress. as usual two pricks in the whitehouse.
I hope GWB will enjoy his retirement like all the other great US presidents. (not bill clinton who seems to think he's still president)
I just hope things like Al-Queda and the current situation and status updates from homeland security are #1 on the list to prevent any terrorist who may use the transition as an opportunity to hold an attack.
Second, i hope all current records and documents remain intact so Obama knows what happened behind closed doors and can figure a way to fix it
to Thankful:
no thanks needed I would do it again, I love this country and what it stands for around the world. Please have no worries about President Elect Obama, I am sure he cares as deeply as the rest of us, I do not agree with all his policies, and was torn between him and Sen. McCain (some of whose policies I also disagreed with) and ended up voting for Sen. Obama, because I felt that while both he and Sen. McCain both cared for our country deeply, Sen. Obama was more "forward looking" and wanted our country to try to regain something it has lost, our spirit and our soul. But that is only my opinion and not worth anymore than anyone elses.
thank you for the Thanks but please in the future instead of thanking me next time you are in a restaraunt eating look around you see the young family just starting out discussing whether they can afford desert or not.. then pick up their tab.. don't tell them who did it, just pay it and leave that is worth more than a thank you (no matter how deeply felt) and might just make someone's world a little better.
I can see this forum is full of haters. Can't stand to see a black family in the white house huh? So you resort to insulting Michelle's sense of style??? I'm guessing the fools who are saying these idiotic things have never read or even leafed through one single fashion magazine right? Lmao ..pathetic
Well we're moving on up...to the west side...in that Deluxe Apartment in D.C...we're moving on up...to the west side
We've finally got a chance to be free....
LOL, just a laugh, but as a native Washingtonian, I'm so proud of the Obamas and can't wait for them to live here. Welcome, welcome, welcome.
The problems of 911 were a direct response from Muslim zealots that started with G Herbert Bush and the Gulf War. How ironic that his son should inherit 911. But Bush took us to Iraq on false info. No terrorist in Iraq. Sadam Hussein may have been a despot, but he was our paid puppet despot. And like it or not, he kept a strong arm on his country. Now the place is chaos. Bush W. will indeed go down as our worse, most inept President in history. Approval ratings aside. What a legacy. A failed war, Hurricane Katrina respone and now the failure of Wall Street. And as I write, this moment Bush W is trying to re-regulate more laws before he leaves. Scorch the earth before Obama take office. For the 22% of you who still love Bush, you may follow him to Crawford like Jim Jones and his People's Temple to Guiana.
Wanna bet Bush can't wait to get out of there!
I voted for McCain, but this is a nice picture. I think the Obamas will do okay. God bless them.
It is funny how the haters are still hating and thinking the media sold Americans on Barack. GET A LIFE. The media covered both campaigns and fortunately Barack just ran a campaign that American's had never seen before and that is what we are about. New and Improved things.
Love the Picture of the two couples. Out with the old and in with the new. Just as simple as that!!!
Put your fangs back in, and be nice for a change. Here's a man (Barack) who wants to help all Americans, not just Democrats. Pray for both of the couples and just be positive. The Bushes will have to go back to Crawford as a total wash-up, and the Obamas are looking at a very difficult time in our history. Pray for both couples.
God doesn't like ugly, and he's not that crazy about pretty either.
That's a really nice picture =]
To: CNN, MSNBC and all of those one sided media, you have been such a disappointed, you all carried Obama to the White House he did not have to do anything other than show his face and read teleprompts...I hope to God he brings "the change" all of you are expecting,,,lets' wait and see..otherwise, all in the media (except foxnews) would have to respond to the over 48% of Americans who did not vote for him,,,
A very close eye....
A depressing day in HISTORY!!!
