"]WASHINGTON (CNN) - John Edwards took the stage at Indiana University on Tuesday night for a discussion on the 2008 presidential election, but members of the audience may have had something else on their minds entirely.
After all, this is the former North Carolina senator's first public appearance since his admission of an extramarital affair sent shockwaves through the political world more than three months ago.
The revelation, confirming a months-long investigation by the National Enquirer, was a political bombshell for the former candidate, who espoused moral values during his White House bid and whose wife is fighting a public battle with breast cancer.

Seriously? I love how self-righteous conservatives get when it comes to this, and then they nominate McCain as their candidate! McCain had multiple extra-marital affairs on his first wife, then ditched her after his accident to marry his rich alien-looking wife so she could buy him a seat in politics.
John Edwards cheated on his wife. Is that terrible? Yes, of course.
Studies show that 60% of men and 40% of women will have an extra-marital affair, though, and my bet is that those who are the most vitriolic towards Edwards because of his are in that percentage.
It's always those with hidden guilt that shout the loudest.
Go Edwards. You're a good guy who screwed up. You're human, and that's part of what makes you great.
He needs to concentrate on healing his family. Maybe he could afterwards become an advocate for the less fortunate of our society. Politically I think he is done.
Ted Steven convicted allowed to linger, and reelected, Alaska and America should be up in arms, this man should have been stripped of his Senate seat upon conviction, local firefighters are stripped upon any conviction outside of driving offenses, are you suprised about Edwards' comeback plans, 99.9% of all policticans are super arrogant and self-serving
I don't know that he could ever come back. If he does, I don't think that time is here yet. He needs to give the public more time. He did not seem to be a "regular" politician - he appeared to be above the fray - and therefore, the public felt much more "betrayed" than with other policians in the same situation.
Yes, people have come back from worse, e.g. Monica Lewinsky.
HOW DOES ANY OF THIS AFFECT HIS ABILITY TO GOVERN OR REPRESENT HIS CONSTITUENTS!!! If I like to drink a beer when I'm sitting around at home does that mean that my employer can't trust me to come to work sober??? He is a human being just like all of you. In case your frail minds have not comprehended it yet, YOU ARE NOT PERFECT EITHER!!! What Edwards does with his personal life is his business just like McCain's personal life is his business just like your personal life is YOUR business. what the hell is wrong with you people. I thought we all wanted to talk about the ISSUES...
I agree with both of you. What Edwards did was personal and non-political.
Edwards is good for the country. Let the church judge his morals.

Agree with Steve in DC's comment.
John Edwards has great political ideas. Why should his personal and non-political mistake keep him from bettering this country as a politician?
In politics, resurection is always possible. Beside he is a good Dem.
In don't care about the fact that he had an affair – that is between him and his wife... but he lied to all of us, publicly, and continues to lie. He has yet to explain the baby, and the timing of his affair.
Go away John, and take care of your sick wife!
He was a lightweight to begin with, and that's not counting the hypocrisy of his affair. No to Edwards for anything.
I would love to know how many people on here calling Edwards a cheating dirtbag have cheated themselves.
john edwards is a disgrace and no one wants to see him ever again. He should go away forever. He's disgusting. How could anyone forgive what he did to his wife.
Yeah, he could be Palin's running mate in 2012.
It's one thing to cheat on your wife, but to do it when she can cancer?!? This democrat ain't having it.
What happened with John Edwards was a real shame. But permitting a political comeback by a man who cheated on his wife after she had battled cance,r and who then lied about it, would be an even bigger shame. John, just keep working on behalf of the poor as you have done. You don't need to hold office to do that.
John's time is over...disappear from public life and focus on your wife... if she is still speaking to you.
Typical democrat! And, of course, as always, the dems will "forgive" him – just like they did Clinton! Idiots!
He is a Clinton wannabe! He needs to go!
This guy is a shame!
Go away you loser, we already got Obama!
We got the House and the senate! We certainly
dont need you! I got an idea! Change parties &
run with Gov. Palin in 2012 for President & VP!
Maybe ya could have an affair, Hey Palin is
mad cute!!!
Ummm, no......
Sorry John...you played dumb when asked about the mistress and hid your lies. Gotta go.
Edwards is a lying, manipulating, hypocritical, demagogue. I was hoping we were finally rid of him.
What a LOSER, I cant think of anything I'd vote him in for. He ruined it for Hillary...stay home and take care of you wife....your finished
I don't agree with what he did!! but if he want to come back all he has to do is move to Alaska, there you can be a convicted felon and still be a senator and run for a senate seat!
If God can forgive us in our everyday mistakes who are we to hold anything against Sen. Edwards. Folks were ready to elect a man that cheated on his former wife and his running mate who was parading her unwed pregnant daughter all over the place. We all have skeletons in the closet. So stop judging others.
