Congressman sorry for likening Obama to Hitler

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/11/12/art.broun.ap.jpg caption="Rep. Paul Broun is sorry for seemingly comparing Obama to Adolf Hitler."]

(CNN) - Republican Paul Broun is sorry for calling President-elect Barack Obama a 'Marxist' and comparing him to Adolf Hitler, the Georgia Congressman said Tuesday.

“I regret putting it that way,” he told WGAC radio in Augusta, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “I apologize to anyone who has taken offense at that.”

In an interview with the Associated Press earlier this week, Broun admitted to calling the future commander-in-chief a 'Marxist' at a recent Rotary club meeting, and said Obama has expressed support for policies similar to those of Hitler.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Broun told the AP. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may– may not, I hope not - but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."

Broun was specifically referring to a July speech by Obama, where the then-Democratic presidential nominee said he supports a civilian force helping the military when it comes to national security: "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded [as the military]," Obama said in the speech that was largely a call to national service.

Responding to those comments, Broun told the AP Monday: "That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did. When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."

"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun added. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential."

The Obama transition office did not respond to Broun's comments, and in his interview Tuesday to WGAC, the first term congressman said, “The point I tried to make is that he is extremely liberal, he has promoted a lot of socialistic ideas, and it just makes me concerned."

Another Republican who does know his history. Marxism, socialism are about as much removed from Hitler's fascist government as is possible to get. Bush and the republicans of the past 8 years come closer to Hitler's Germany than anything that Obama is proposing to do. Lets call a fascist a fascist. A fascist by any other name is still a fascist.

To Obama Thought Police; are you a Republican fascist? You sound like you hate Democratic America.

It's OK if you think like that, but don't try to harm my beloved America.

First of all, this guy has confused Marxism with totalitarianism. He appears to have no idea what either are. Hitler was obviously not Marxist. For that matter neither was Stalin. Stalin rode the coat tails of Marxist sentiment to a position of dictator. The Soviet state was communist by declaration only. There has yet to to be a communist state in the spirit of Marx and Engels.

Hitler and Stalin were both totalitarian dictators who had ruthless internal military security forces.

We have internal security agencies such as the FBI, DEA, Secret Service, NSA, Customs, US Marshal's Service, etc. We already have significant internal security forces. Perhaps integrating them might be more efficient and save some money. Mr. tax and spend Republican.

You definitely should regret even uttering those evil words against President – Elect Barack Obama !

I rebuke your evil words Paul Broun, in the name of Jesus.

You [ Barack Obama], are from God and have overcome them [the enemy's attacks, schemes, and plots ] , because the one [God] who is in you [ Barack Obama] is greater than the one [the enemy ] who is in the world. – 1 John 4:4

No weapon forged against you [ Barack Obama] will prevail, and you [ Barack Obama] will refute every tongue that accuses you [ Barack Obama] . This is the heritage of the servants [ Barack Obama] of the LORD, and this is their [ Barack Obama] vindication from me," declares the LORD. – Isaiah 54:17

May God bless President- elect Barack Obama, his family, their life, and his presidency in 2008 and 2009 !

By the way idiot...Hitler hated liberals as much as you do. You are much more like Adolf Hitler than any liberal could ever be.

I hope the Dem's put him on the spot over and over again so his seat will be taken by someone else come his next re-election.

Where did Paul Brown actually appologize? I mean he said he was sorry and then he kind of kept on the same thinking, but trying to explain it away. He is entitled to his thoughts, but he has to realize comaparing a presidential canidate to Hitler is just dumb regardless. He did that to get attention and to scare people off of Obama. Its the Karl Rove way. Lets just scare the people to death instead of having a true platorm to run on. The GOP needs to look themselves in the mirror and quit this crap. Its getting old!

You call that an APOLOGY? This election has shown that your style of "attack politics" doesn't work anymore, so keep it up... You will find yourself looking for a job when your seat comes up. The Republican party will self destruct if this kind of crap is all they have to offer.

    And I say GOOD RIDDANCE....

This doesn't surprise me. The AJC newspaper didn't acknowledge Obama had won until later in the afternoon at lunch time. We were going to work on the 5th at 7:00am and we wanted a paper and they still had the 4th paper at the stands.

I am tired of all these Republiclowns calling us Democats socialists. Even if we are liberal, there is nothing wrong with that. Liberal means we believe in a fair and just society. Social and economic justice are our main concerns. Can someone out there tell me what is so wrong with wanting to help the poor? Message for Republicans: Be more liberal and someday you will recapture the White House, and that´s the bottom line!

It's hard to believe that someone this ignorant of history can be elected to Congress. But wait - many prominent Republicans were promoting and supporting Sarah Palin (an equally ignorant individual) as Vice President. The leadership of the Republican Party (and I'm a registered Republican) is now led by individuals who will sacrifice the nation's security and welfare for their short sighted political purposes. Republicans owe it to the courty to get rid of these morons.

As a German major, I am offended, but not surprised at this man's lack of knowledge. Hitler wasn't a Marxist and didn't strive to be. The only reason that the word socialist was even in the name (National Socialism) was mostly to deceive people into thinking that way. Moreover, in terms of a civilian security force, I think we already have one. It's called the police, and from time to time, they have been known to thwart would-be terrorists. Hmmm....That sounds very dangerous and radical to me....

That people believe this guy shows how little people know about history.
