Congressman sorry for likening Obama to Hitler

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/11/12/art.broun.ap.jpg caption="Rep. Paul Broun is sorry for seemingly comparing Obama to Adolf Hitler."]

(CNN) - Republican Paul Broun is sorry for calling President-elect Barack Obama a 'Marxist' and comparing him to Adolf Hitler, the Georgia Congressman said Tuesday.

“I regret putting it that way,” he told WGAC radio in Augusta, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “I apologize to anyone who has taken offense at that.”

In an interview with the Associated Press earlier this week, Broun admitted to calling the future commander-in-chief a 'Marxist' at a recent Rotary club meeting, and said Obama has expressed support for policies similar to those of Hitler.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Broun told the AP. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may– may not, I hope not - but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."

Broun was specifically referring to a July speech by Obama, where the then-Democratic presidential nominee said he supports a civilian force helping the military when it comes to national security: "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded [as the military]," Obama said in the speech that was largely a call to national service.

Responding to those comments, Broun told the AP Monday: "That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did. When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."

"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun added. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential."

The Obama transition office did not respond to Broun's comments, and in his interview Tuesday to WGAC, the first term congressman said, “The point I tried to make is that he is extremely liberal, he has promoted a lot of socialistic ideas, and it just makes me concerned."

Respect the president? He'll get respect when he earns it. while well spoken, he's short on details and all you democratic morons just jack step in line like you say the conservatives do, you're just too close to see it. This is a house of cards built on promises without specifics. We'll see how you feel when you're tapped for manditory public service under higher taxes! If you believe in redistribution, just send your retirement check to the Treasury, but not me. The point made was that Hitler started from a Democracy and quickly migrated to being a dictator. It would be easy for Nobama to do, with the full support of his congress. Frankly, you people can't even have a simple discussion without name calling – all in all – no better than what you say republicans are doing. the pot calling the kettle black. grow up!

You have all been fooled by yet another Democratic smooth talker. I just hope that I am not in a position to say "I told you so" in a few years.

The bottom line is that this country just elected one of the least experienced presidents who has questionable ties & relationships whose policies of change are going to limit our freedoms and make us more dependant on the government for our day to day needs.

It's all very disturbing to me. I am sure the reaction to this post will be several additional posts calling me stupid, racist etc. That is just a reflection of the maturity and intelligence on your side.

This guy doesn't even understand that Hitler opposed marxism, nor does he understand that marxism doesn't even imply that you'll have a commuist russia style autocracy. I may not be from his state, or in a good position to make this kind of statement but:

I here by call upon Rep Paul Broun to resign his post in the house of repersentitives. This man clearly doesn't understand the reasons why the Republican party was so defeated this election cycle. Further continued devisiveness of this kind can only lead to more public distrust with our federal government at a time when confidence comes at a premium and trust is virtually non-existant. This nation needs unity, it needs faith in it's leaders, it needs hope.

Sir, for the good of this nation as well as your poltical party, please take leave of your post.

It comes down to this. Rich people are very afraid of someone taking away the things they own. The people (most of us) who are struggling would just like cheaper healthcare and world peace!

Basically if the two types were in kindergarten, the Right Winger would scream and hit other children in fear of losing their blocks or someone coming to knock them over. The Liberal would share his blocks and then just cry when the Right Winger took them all.

People like this imbecile Broun are an embarrasment.

I majored in German history and there is really nothing in Obama's statement that raises the spectre of a national security apparatus akin to Hitler's. Howver, the "anti-terror" measures and legalized torture taken under Bush and endorsed by mentally gifted GOP politicians like Broun seem much closer to the tactics of the Nazis and Stalin to me, but then again, I spent years studying this and can't see Russia from my house. . .

This is why the Republican Party lost in this election. You can spin anyone in to what ever you want them to be if you have a willing audience. I understand the reasoning behiond demonizing the enemy in war. How do you kill a friend? It is sad we have to demonize our own citizens just to be elected. This guy knows what he was doing and his only concern was his party drove this country in a ditch and he had to scare voters with this.

This guy belongs to the party whose president and administration has been responsible for some of the most egregious inroads on our civil liberties, and he is worried about the kind of problem we 'might' have with President Elect Obama? Moron.

The thing that makes the least sense is the actual substance of his comparisons. Hitler was obviously not a Marxist in the first place. Also, Hilter was an arch-conservative. It's amazing that a U.S. Congressman doesn't know anything about history. Wake up Broun, you're an idiot.
