Sources: Richardson a 'serious contender' for Commerce post

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="After dropping out of the presidential race, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who had worked in Bill Clinton's administration, endorsed Barack Obama."]
CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico is a serious contender for commerce secretary in the Obama administration, two sources close to the transition said Friday.

The same sources, however, cautioned that Richardson could be tapped for another senior post as well. They do not consider Richardson's appointment to the Commerce Department to be a done deal.

Richardson, 61, was a candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Currently in his second term as New Mexico's governor, he previously served as ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary in the Clinton administration.

If asked he will serve at the pleasure of the President. He is a smart man. Obama can use his advice and it will be a good for the country to have Mr. Richardson as part of the Obama team.

Hillary has many talents but "leader" is not one of them. I can just see all of the confusion at the State Department when she gets there. She doesn't know how to organize or unite her team behind her. Bill Richardson would have been a better choice for that spot. We shall see how this plays out. I hope it works but do not have a lot of confidence in her people skills.

How come the Canadians on these posts seem to understand American politics better than we do here in the US? It is not a personality or beauty should be about the best person for the job. Obama is doing a great job selecting his team.

I thought this selection is all about country first and self interest maybe last. What some of you are saying seem to me like the opposite...and that is not good for the country.

We need him here or as Secretary of Energy.
Gov. Richardson must return to Washington, D.C. He has much to offer our country in Washington.

I rather see Bill Richardson as secretary of state – he's got the experience to do it. As a Hillary supporter, I've grown so darn tired of all the drama she's stirring up. You're not some diva, Sen. Clinton. Believe it or not.

Jack, you are way too funny! Actually, some of these people would never be happy no matter who Obama picks, unless of course it's Joe the Plummer.

He should be our Secretary of State.

Hillary should not be rewarded for the cheap shots she took at Obama during the campaign.

Looks like everyone who badmouthed Obama–Clinton and Lieberman–come out in great shape, while those who supported Obama get the scraps.

BILL RICHARDSON IS THE MOST VERSATILE MEMBER OF THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION. Richardson can easily step in and successfully lead the following appointments:

[1.] – Vice President of the United States,
[2.] – White House Chief of Staff
    [3.] – Secretary of State,
    [4.] – Secretary of Commerce,
[5.] – Secretary of the Interior,
    [6.] – Secretary of Labor,
[7.] – Secretary of Housing and Urban Development,
    [8.] – Secretary of Energy,
[9.] – Secretary of Homeland Security,
[10.] – Secretary of Health and Human Services
