Sources: Richardson a 'serious contender' for Commerce post

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="After dropping out of the presidential race, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who had worked in Bill Clinton's administration, endorsed Barack Obama."]
CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico is a serious contender for commerce secretary in the Obama administration, two sources close to the transition said Friday.

The same sources, however, cautioned that Richardson could be tapped for another senior post as well. They do not consider Richardson's appointment to the Commerce Department to be a done deal.

Richardson, 61, was a candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Currently in his second term as New Mexico's governor, he previously served as ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary in the Clinton administration.

yeah what a traitor and calculated politician seems to me you need to choose people you can trust not people who always want something and when the going gets tough can always stand tall with you ,he's a dissapointment if you ask me.

I think Richardson has many talents and would fit well in any one of several high level posts.

Seriously...can we stop the "oh this isn't change" comments?" It is really pathetic.

    1. He's not president yet.
    2. If he put a bunch of faces in his cabinet that you never heard of, you'd be spazzing out because McCain's entire campaign was run on being more experienced.
    3. Change comes from policy not personality. You probably voted for personality the last 8 years and that's why we are in the amidst of economic collapse, at total war with a tactic...not an enemy, and completely socially divided nation.

You can disagree with the can disagree with the policy...but since he's not President and has not made any policies...Stop your whining. You sound like a child. Leave the internet to the big kids.

If Barack does not keep his promises, we the people who helped him get elected will work hard to remove him from office. I wonder what kind of message he is going to preach in the next election. The change message would not work in the next election.

Please do not pick Bill Richardson for any post. I live in the state of New Mexico and all you need to do is look at the status of this state to see that he is not qualified for a U S government post. He can't even take care of his own state.

Richardson has foreign policy credentials and he didn't even have to lie about having them like Hillary did. Let her return to the senate and be a junior senator like all others who try and fail to win the presidency. Why does she warrant such special treatment? I can understand Obama's wanting put forth a united front but he doesn't have to be a fool about it. This is still the same woman who called him all kinds of names and attacked his credentials and abilities. For that you give her the Secretary of State position? Stop kissing her behind and be a leader!!!

I thought him a good pick for Sec. of state but now that the idea of him as Commerce Sec. is floated I think he might be even better in that post. He has the demeanor suited to re-think and negoiate our ill-drafted trade agreements.

Were you expecting a leader from a boy scout troop in Wyoming or from Cape Cod? There has to be some experience here...Obama's selections have been thoughtful...we don't need another Brown from FEMA...

Reject the Offer Bill because you have more experience than Hillary in negotiating critical issues with friendly or hostile leaders. Hillary is so MEAN, why Obama why why why are you giving Hillary the SoS? You know she thinks she deserves it or worse owed to her and her supporters are hateful. Obama to think I donated to you just don't make me regret my donations so be careful. Forget what those power hungry people in Washington want and make us proud Barack.
And CNN what's the big idea with your word press highlighting Obama's name in red like an error? Didn't you guys get the memo to add his name to your dictionary?

Here's hoping Hillary gets the Sec. of State. She (and Bill C. too, for that matter) are very much loved and respected around the world. She will be good at it. That said, Richardson would be good at some position, I am sure. He seems competent.

You mean he MIGHT be considered for Secretary of State if Clinton stays in the Senate?
Poor Richardson. He is only second best to the ladies for either SOS or Commerce (after Pritzger turned down the latter)?
Not much fun being a man these days.

I agree with Ed from Sante Fe. Bill should have the SoS position not Clinton. Bill has the experience and he threw his support to Obama knowing it would strain his relationship with the Clintons.

Regarding the naming of all the previous Clinton posts, so much for all the change. I was really expecting more outsiders from educational institutions and non-profit/profit corporation in this administration.

    I'm a bit disappointed.

Bill is a better person than that and he will serve with honor, in whatever post he is chosen for and will also do a great job.

Richardson will be a fine Commerce Sec. if he is offered and accepts. For all you folks belly aching about all old faces from the Clinton administration and no change GET REAL. You have to have SUCCESSFUL people with experience to lead. Remember Brownie at FEMA?
For you McCainiacs add some sugar to those sour grapes. For those who supported OBAMA chill. We are in for a hughly bumpy road thanks to the repubs and their incompetence for the last almost 8 years.
