(CNN) - Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter confirms to CNN the Obama daughters will attend Sidwell Friends school in Washington, DC.
"They looked at a lot of great schools but they felt Sidwell fit their best interests," spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter told CNN.
Chelsea Clinton also attended the school when her father was in the White House.
no public school for his kids, no way, only poor people send their kids to public schools!
Good choice, the school sounds excellent.
God bless these adorable girls!
Hey Richard,
The Obama kids have never gone to public school. He supports school choice only for himself. Otherwise, his education policy is going to be whatever the teachers' unions want.
I would have been impresesd if they had opted for a public school. Probably too many security issues with that one.
Why can't they be go to a public school? It would renew faith in the D.C. school system.
George and Kathleen, the Obama's can't choose just any school for their daughters' security. It has to be somewhere where they feel safe. This is the same school where Chelsea Clinton went, so we know it's secure and the Secret Service has already worked with them.
The safety of his daughters are the top priority, and this is where they will be safe. This has nothing to do with being against public schools at all.
Good choice. After all they need protection and a private school would be better, because they would not need a wider area.
@ Kathleen....... what is SO hypocritical about sending their girls to a good school, that has a record dealing with the special needs of our Nation's First Family?
The REAL hypocrites are those who claim to be Christian, yet hate and dismiss everything they do not agree with!
wow, isn't this supposed to be safety issue?
No surprise.
The education of the kids is the first priority. The gals were in a private school before so it does not come as any surprise at all. OBAMAS are looking for what is best for their daughters and that should be fine by the rest of the Americans as well.
This a good choice.Public school would be difficult for the girls and their fellow students with the secert service around
Thats a good pick but could have appreciated if it was kept private!
Obama's daughters already go to private school so why put them in a different environment just to make a political point? Obama doesn't have to have his daughters in public school in order to address problems with public schools. And private school is not just for the "rich & elite".
zzzz
To George and Kathleen and Frank –
Do you honestly expect the President of the United States to send his children to public school? Any public school would be insufficient, but especially those in Washington D.C. These girls are going to have Secret Service agents with them 24 hours a day and that would be much too disruptive and impractical at a public school. Not to mention, the dangers inherent in a public school that have been addressed by private campuses. Get a life folks. Just because you do not like the President Elect does not give you the right to criticize the educational and safety choices he makes for his children.
The kids are currently in a private setting in Chicago – why would you take them out of their comfort zone just to prove a point regarding public schools? The security measures are already in place at Sidwell and it would cost DC Public School over a million dollars.
God Speed, girls!
Listen, you jerks, they are allowed to go to any school they want and you have no opinion on it. Shut up. Not your business.
What? Another Clinton thing? What an outrage! If he really wants to end the partisan bickering he should be sending his daughters to wherever Jenna Bush went. Right? What happened to change? ... Lol... (sigh)
Who cares?
Why must we broadcast to the world where his daughters will be attending school? With all the hatred that this election showed still exists in America, that should have been a private matter.
On the other hand, to everyone accusing him of hypocrisy, these are the President's children for crying out loud! Is any public school really safe for them to attend? I think not!
Leave them (especially the little girls) alone, please!!!!! There are parents who can barely eek a living but will spend what little they have on Catholic school education, for example. The reasons are varied – from discipline to religious teaching. Go read a book !!!
Sending his daughters to the only school that has recent experience effectively dealing with the enormous security and media complications that will inevitably confront the Obama girls was his best, and probably only, option.
It's not hyprocritical for Obama to send his kids to a private school. Few public schools would be equipped to deal with the maelstrom of publicity resulting from Malia and Sasha's enrollment.
Frank, Kathleen, George and the rest of you guys complaining that Obama didn't send his girls to public school – have you been to a DC public school??? That would be child abuse to have the ability to send your kids to a better school and instead you put them in one of the worst districts in the country. My guess is, if you were in the same situation, you would do something similar. Walk in his shoes for a bit before talking – if that still doesn't change your mind, go visit a DC public school for a week and then post your comments.
Here we go...the haters are coming out in full force.
If I were a teacher or the parent of a child in the public school system in DC...I would not want the Obama girls in the school because their presence and the security required to protect them would be a huge distraction for the other students.
I have no doubt that the Obamas would have seriously considered sending their daughters to public schools if security was not an issue.
They're doing the right thing for their daughters as well as everyone else who might be affected by their presence.
