A picture of a Christmas tree is not the first thing you would expect to see on an invitation to an event celebrating Hanukkah, but that is exactly what recipients of invitations to this year's White House Hanukkah reception initially got in the mail.
The invitation sent to American Jewish leaders on behalf of the President and First Lady, requesting "the pleasure of your company at a Hanukkah reception," bore an image of a Clydesdale horse-drawn cart, carrying the White House Christmas tree, with a Christmas wreath-adorned White House in the background.
Mrs. Bush's press secretary, Sally McDonough, attributed the snafu to a "staff mistake" in not printing separate cards for the different White House holiday events, as has been the custom in years past. "Mrs. Bush is apologetic, It is just something that fell through the cracks," she said, referring to the role of the First Lady's office in sending out the invitations.
The card as originally intended featured a menorah given to the White House during Harry Truman's presidency. That mailing was to have gone out today, according to Mrs. McDonough.
McDonough added that the White House had received "dozens" of calls of support from members of the Jewish community to express their appreciation for what President and Mrs. Bush had done for them through the course of Mr. Bush's presidency.
What is new
Oy, vey! Non-news again, CNN. How about reporting the DOW is UP again today...how many days in a row is that???
EXPECTED,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
mistakes happen
B F D
This really doesn't need to be mentioned. We've all got bigger issues to worry about.
This is minor compared to all the other mistakes made by this White House in the past 8 years. If only this was the most severe damage done by Bush/Cheney.
What's the big deal? I wouldn't mind getting a menorah and I'm catholic. We should be over this by now..........
heheheh I believe a bad pun like: "Bush is mailing it in" is in order, no?
Bush cant wait to run out of there, he thinks its christmas already!
I SOOOOOO want a copy of that card!!!!
I wonder if they will do the same when they send invitations for the muslim holiday coming in about 10 days.
*hand slaps forehead*
Just another sign of the Bush team's incompetence at everything they do.
Come on CNN..Must you comment and find fault on the most obscure things? We waste so much time/money and effort attempting to be PC. Get over it and resport something of substance and value. Of course, there's a sector of the economy that thrives on slicing up something and figuring out HOW it can be "offensive" to someone out there. Get over it!!
Are we really shocked by this?
It is Bush. Hello what else do you expect?
Ha ha, those silly Bushes! Gosh they just can't help themselves, can they?
The American public is waiting eagerly just off stage with their shepherds crooks, ready to drag the Bushes off Jan. 20th... Then we'll all be singing the refrain, Hallelujah!
I wonder what will happen if Michelle Obama makes these mistakes?
Rush and Hannity would claim it is the 'END OF THE WORLD' and Michelle is incompetent, and unfit to be first lady, and out of her 'comfort zone', and uncultured, and unsophisticated, and on, and on, and on . . .
It's a beautiful card. Enjoy it – don't make an issue out of nothing.
Looking at the "big" picture.....this is nothing. We should certainly have more important things to worry about than an incorrect card being sent out. I'm sure the Jewish leadership has accepted the WH apology and moved on. I think the rest of us should do the same.
I don't think much of Bush, but it's an honest mistake. Just be glad Karl Rove wasn't in charge. He would have sent cards out for Merry Republicmas, and other cards out for the heathen holidays.
Because people are tired of hearing of the "Dow up, Dow down". yeah, it's a mistake; it's just mistake #109,435 for the Bush Admin.
Bush can't wait to leave. They're not even proofing what they mail out. Good times.
Yes, mistakes do happen. They seen to happen with great frequency with this "administration"(???). It's a shame Laura has had to put up with all of this. I'm sure she will be glad to get back to the ranch.
