Obama outlines initiative to create 2.5 million jobs

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="The chief executives of ailing automakers GM, Chrysler and Ford testify before Congress on Friday."](CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama on Saturday outlined some of his plan to create 2.5 million jobs by 2011, and said he will push for immediate action by Congress when he takes office in January.

Obama wants to make public buildings more energy-efficient, repair roads and bridges, modernize schools, increase broadband access and ensure that health care professionals have access to the latest technology.

Watch how bad roads lead to good jobs

"Our government now pays the highest energy bill in the world," he said in the weekly Democratic radio address.

"We need to upgrade our federal buildings by replacing old heating systems and installing efficient light bulbs. That won't just save you, the American taxpayer, billions of dollars each year. It will put people back to work."

Wow Jim, for such a short news story you sure didn't absorb very much. If you had actually read the entire story you would have realized that Obama plans to create more jobs by "mak[ing] public buildings more energy-efficient, repair roads and bridges, modernize schools, increase broadband access and ensure that health care professionals have access to the latest technology." That is a far cry from just changing light bulbs.

Why don't you read the entire story before you post a comment next time.

I sure hope that someone in the Obama administration has read Thomas L. Friedman's, "Hot, Flat, and Crowded". So far, I haven't heard anything that shows me that Obama's people really know what we are up against and the tremendously unpopular political decisions that he is going to have to make in order for us to have a green revolution. When Barack proposes an additional $1 to $3 dollar federal gas tax, I'll know he gets it. Read the'll see why.

I'm sure all these CEOs love America and want everyone to be well off and prosperous. They've been trying their best to make great cars for America to buy. If you believe this, I have some cheap land I'd like to sell you.

Instead of bailing out the automakers follow the Argentinean example give very low interest loans to low and medium income people to buy car. In the mean time the $25 billions in the budget to revamp the industry should move fast to reach its final destination...if people do not want the cars in the future bailout yes or not and no revamp it? if you not it means they are going bankrupt anyway but without sinking the rest of the country that paid taxes and did their homework on time.

Sounds good to me. Refreshing to see so many different strategies are being developed to repair our economy. Still early, but feeling good.

Jim: That's what you got out of thisl changing light bulbs? This demonstrates that nothing Obama or his administration will do, will make you happy. Though I do not make predictions, I hope that you and those like you, will also benefit from a better America, starting January 20, 2009. You are welcome to join the rest of us no matter your nastiness.

What the Sensators should have asked the three hair sprayed CEO as to how they will live off of $1 a year? I would like to know that and I'm sure lots of American peoplen would too. If they can live off of $1 a years that would help the economy. That was a slap in the American face when they made that statement. I'm sure they have millions saved and will have millions from the bailout money.

When will the Senators start helping American peoples who really need help? We will not forget who voted for the hair sprayed CEO when it come up for them to be elected.

Wow....a president who examines FACTS, considers them, then initiates substantive curative action for our nation's problems...what a blessed change after eight nightmarish years based on egotism and incompetence in a president!

The light bulb comment is nothing more than a rehash of Republicans mocking Obama talking about air in car tires.

You don't want to see a better America, just so Obama doesn't get the credit. You would rather see America decline even further just to see Republicans get back in power. (only to have them rehash the same proven failed do nothing polices that don't work BTW) You're a lesser citizen and not an American patriot, just like the GOP.

Jim, you are very ignorant. All you care about is that Republicans "win" and not about the welfare of our country or its citizens. You are a very sad man. I truly feel sorry for you.
Obama has come up with some very innovative ways to both create jobs and save money. It is not about simply "changing lightbulbs". Maybe if your "team" had made these positive and creative programs our country wouldn't be in the hellish situation it is in! Please don't say such ignorant things. Do a little research and you may learn something.

get over it!!!! he won. and he will probably do a good job. (compared to bush, he will be stunning.)

yes, fixing bridges and "changing light bulbs" is a good plan. it will get people to work and help turn the economy around. if repubs play obstructionist, they are signing their re-election death sentence for 2010.

don't think pe obama's plan is good? please tell me YOUR brilliant plan to get the u.s. economy back on track (cricket noises – geeep, geeep, geeep.) that's what i thought. you have no plan – just noise.

Jim, You sound like a typical republican, You take one sentence
and form a ignorant conclusion. Obama has done more before he is even in the White House than you republicans could manage to do in eight years, except run this country into the ground., with your right wing extremism, hypocrisy. I doubt that you would be abe to understand a sound economic plan if it bit you.

It worked pretty well for Roosevelt! I'm no great historian but this seems to be an updated version of his "new deal" plan which was really quite successful. It's going to take the serious support of the country though.

Jim, Just what we need. Another republican know it all comparing building new roads and such to changing lightbulbs. It's because of peolple like you who can't seem to respect other americans, that we are in this trouble now. Don't hold your breath in 2012. On second thought.... go ahead!

You've got to be kidding me, Jim, with a reaction like that. Actually, you've articulated quite clearly the problem with Washington that even your boy McCain wanted to get past...being willing to stall any kind of plan, progress, or compromise in order to put another do-nothing Republican back in office. Even if the plan were simply a change the light bulbs idea as you want to make it out to be – that plan has more relevant action in it that anything the Republicans have done over the last couple of years. Oh wait...maybe instead of changing light bulbs we can start another war. Jim, you'll eventually realize that your way of thinking is in the past and this nation is ready to move forward again. Be a positive force, my friend.

OMG – you really think that is the WHOLE plan? Grow up. Take a breath and give the Pres. Elect a chance to get into office. You are reacting to a sound bite – ONE THING... C'mon People – He didn't get to where he is by being stupid. You people amaze me. Study the facts, not just the headlines.

Obama has did more to help America since November 4th 2008 than Bush has done since January 20th, 2001. Bush has only harmed us.

    To Jim,

I love for the Republicans to slow him down. If we all dont get our acts together and put POLITICS before REALITY, there will be no America in 2012 or 2016. A study came out and 8 years of eating peanuts, had us behind EU in Science. Four to five years from now, New York may not be the Financial Center of the world anymore. It'll be one of the soon-to-be EU country, Britain. Yeah, we gave W a blank check 8 years and now, the WHITE elephants want to try to stop Obama. If you dont want to wake up to a Free America in 2012 or 2016, keep pushing the DONKEYS down.

Change light bulbs and people to go around and put air in other peoples tires. The light bulb needs to be a screwed in a little tighter upstairs in Washington. Thats the people that got us into this mess. The problem is most are staying.
