Early Blair House check-in for Obamas unavailable

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="The Obamas had been hoping for an early Blair House check-in."]CHICAGO (CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama will not be moving his family across the street from the White House early, despite his request to do so. Blair House, which incoming presidents traditionally occupy 5 days before inauguration day on January 15, is apparently booked in the early part of January.

An Obama transition spokesperson says the family initially "explored the idea" of moving into Blair House early so that daughters Sasha and Malia could start school on schedule. But the family was told there were previously-scheduled events and guests that could not be displaced.

"The Blair House, the President's guest house for visiting dignitaries, is available to President-elect Obama and his family starting January 15, as is historically the case," said Sally McDonough, spokeswoman for First Lady Laura Bush.

"As for any conversation, I don't comment on specific conversations about transition details."

The Obama transition spokesperson emphasized the White House has been "extremely accommodating" to the Obama family, adding that the entire process has been "smooth and friendly."

I wonder how much money the current corrupt admin is getting for renting out the blair house. One of the first thing the new congress needs to do is outlaw the republician party. The entire world would be a lot better off without the party of evil.

If it's booked, it's booked and probably has been for a long time. Sure, it would be better if the girls could start their new school after the holidays, but no one expected a new President with young children. So, it will be the 15th as usual, it's not a big deal. The Obamas had their children in mind and asked about availability. They might be disappointed, but certainly respect the situation. They have other choices available to them.

From Dumb White Guy: Impeach Obama now. Just because he hasn't done anything illegal yet doesn't mean he won't in the future. Impeach him before he takes office even if this is a legal impossibility. I voted for Palin and I'm bitter because she won't be president now. We need Obama to confess to crimes he might have committed in the past and might commit in the future. He needs to prove beyond all doubt that he is innocent of all possible charges and then we won't believe him. I'm not paranoid, just ignorant and slightly drunk.

Way to be selective about getting thoughtful commentary on here, CNN. My hat goes off to you!

Please let's not foget that Bush had the American people to protect when 911 hit. And has still been busy putting the American people's safety first. What did Obama say he was going to do his first day as president? Send all the solder's home... God help our country....

Washington DC offers several five star hotels within walking distance of both the White House and Blair House. I am sure that anyone of them would be pleased to host the President elect and his family? Why is this such an issue.

Why is this news. His staff asked a question, was given a reasonable answer, and that should be the end of it.

I am sure that the President Elect and Michelle will make adequate arrangements for their daughters to start school. Unfortunately they can't just check into the local Motel 6 for a few days because of the security arrangements that follow the President. (or President Elect, if you will) Asking if the guest accomodations were available isn't elitist, it's common sense, if it was available it would have been the easiest for the security people but I am sure other arrangements can be made.

Yeah I guess the first commenters hadn't read through the article – and at the end it even says how gracious the Bush family has been to the Obama family – not even really sure why this was a story.

President-elect Obama has work to do and lots of stuff to fix. He needs the early start and should be accommodated even at the inconvenience of other Blair House guests.

Gerda, it's December 12th. The election was almost six weeks ago. And you're STILL thundering on about Obama being an elitist? Sorry, but that ship has sailed.

Hey, since Johnny Mac is such a populist, perhaps he'll offer up one or two of his seven houses for the Obama family to stay in until Blair becomes available. I mean, that's what I would do if just such an opportunity came up! And since I'm just like John and Sarah, Obama can drive one of my 13 cars during the stay as well! And I'm sure Aunt Sarah wouldn't dream of making Michelle continue to wear that $149 Black | White dress around while a guest in my MacMansion VI – she can have her pick of Sarah's six-figure wardrobe! Heck, I'd even show them how to use the espresso machine, er, that is if I had one. Because Johnny Mac is no elitist. Not at all.

People, let's not get upset. I am certain that the outgoing administration was trying to cram a lot in before leaving Washington, like entertaining foreign dignitaries; that is understandable. Furthermore, this is Washington, D.C. and President-elect Obama knows many people and has many aquaintances that will gladly share their homes with his family for a few days so his girls can get into school on time. Gee-whiz, let's stop arguing people and get down to the business of righting our country. I love all of you, and respect your patriotism and love for America.

Peggy from Texas seems to feel that corruption is ok as long as the crooks wrap themselves in the flag. Her comment reaffrms the fact that nothing good ever comes out of Texas. Texans, the lowest form of white people in the U.S.

    DCM IL,

If this country could stand the real Bush for eight years, why can't they stand the real Obama of which many has already seen? No matter what you and people like you may think or hope for, Obama will be one of the best presidents, if not the best, this country will ever see.

If you were really for IL, you would know that. We all need to forget about color and see what this man can and will do for this country.

PEGGY-I love the way people like yourself all of a sudden want complete support of all Americans when people like yourself have diverted this country toward the path we are on with you're lack of support. Regardless if you like or hate Bush you're party turned you're back on our military and downgraded all that they informed us about while you sit in you're nice warm house with an Obama T-shirt on crying about it. STOP TALKING ALREADY DEMOCRATS!!!!!! You and the media (or lack thereof) will be sorry. But unlike you and your pals I will support this country forever regardless if it becomes the "cool thing to do" to make fun of it or its President. Its not so much people like anonymous 1 why we are in turmoil as it is blind hypocrites like yourself that take 0 responsibilty and blame the Government for everything that goes wrong. Have a nice day!
