Michelle Obama's urban chic heads to D.C.

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Future first lady Michelle Obama with one of her favorite designers, Maria Pinto."] CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Michelle Obama turned the campaign trail into a runway this year, sporting eye-catching colors and feminine cuts that sent fashion bloggers buzzing.

As she coupled chic designer splurges with off-the-rack goodies from J. Crew, H&M, White House/Black Market and Target, fashion spectators say her ability to make a strong statement on a budget sends an important message during tough economic times.

Watch: Michelle Obama, First Lady fashion icon?

"Michelle Obama can't be too over the top; she has to be recession chic all the way," style expert Mary Alice Stephenson said. In a soured economy, the choices she made throughout the campaign show that "she gets it," Stephenson said.

And it's inspiring American women to emulate her style.

The haters on this topic crack me up. Most women in the US would love to be as fit as Michelle Obama so what ever they put on could look as good.

Besides, we all know if she spent a bundle on her clothes most people would be ready to stone her in the village court yard.

Funny, that probably wouldn't have happened to Cindy McCain.

Things that make you go HMMMMMMM.....

Meh, HOPE WON but the GOP is still trying to kill it. Go figure. You'd think a bunch of bible-thumping fundamentalist literalists would let a little peace, hope, love and charity flow over the Xmas season, but I guess it's only important to misinterpret Bible verses to jsutify stepping on others to elevate yourself, all while ignoring what Jesus really taught.

No offense to anyone, but Michelle Obama is not even in the same ballpark as Jacqueline Kennedy as a first lady fashion icon. Just stop.

Noah – This shows how insane you really are....not to mention stupid...Cindy Mcshame's can wear 365 different outfits a year, with the money they have.....Clothes is just a very small money item for them....I would not ever vote for anyone that has 15 automobiles /9 houses, and so much money, that they are simply out of touch with anyone, or anybody...
    BTW – cnn, I love Michele's TEETH !! It's a big turn on...

Laura, Boston: Doesn't the difference in style between the two ladies also indicate a difference in the roles these women have played in their lives as well as the status of women in general over the past 4 decades?

It is also a reflection in the general relaxing of what attire is appropriate: in other words the two women reflect the role of women and the style of the times. I like that I and my daughters can wear jeans and sweat pants when it is appropriate.

You know, I'm thinking Mrs. Obama would much rather CNN focus on how our country will support our troops and their families, than what she will be wearing while in the White House. But of course, that's just wishful thinking.

Funny how it is liberals calling for tolerance when its their supporters rushing churches, tearing down the Office of the President and those who don't support their "regressive" views. As a matter of fact, if they would read that book called history, they would see that their failed ideas already were implemented...and we went to war over it. Oh, but that was a different time right? are these the kinds of stories we'll read about during the next 4 years? Or, will we hear about the "whitey" comments made at her former church at are at the very core of Michelle? You can put a dress on a pig, but...uh, yeah.

If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything. The Obama family sets a wonderful example that you all should start using as a model for your own lives.

You all crack me. We the anti Republicans getting all excited that the anti Obama's will be spewing hate for the next years as they have for the past eight, and then there are those who will tell you how wonderful, smart, charitable, vicious, greedy, ugly, air headed these women are and not one of you know them intimately. Oh yes, you read about it on the net. Oh yeah, at the unbiased sites you all visit. As John Stossel would say, Give Me A Break

Funny how all you Obama fan club members call non-members haters, etc. Yet you undoubtably turn around and post, or at least support, vile and hateful remarks about Bush, McCain, Palin, or anybody who does not conform to your world view. Personally, I don't care what Mrs. Obama wears. The vain pop culture in this country judges people by their fashion sense and not their character. If Mrs. Obama carries herself with the same grace as Mrs. Bush, then good for her. If she entangles herself with the celebrity culture, then its a shame.
