Michelle Obama's urban chic heads to D.C.

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Future first lady Michelle Obama with one of her favorite designers, Maria Pinto."] CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Michelle Obama turned the campaign trail into a runway this year, sporting eye-catching colors and feminine cuts that sent fashion bloggers buzzing.

As she coupled chic designer splurges with off-the-rack goodies from J. Crew, H&M, White House/Black Market and Target, fashion spectators say her ability to make a strong statement on a budget sends an important message during tough economic times.

Watch: Michelle Obama, First Lady fashion icon?

"Michelle Obama can't be too over the top; she has to be recession chic all the way," style expert Mary Alice Stephenson said. In a soured economy, the choices she made throughout the campaign show that "she gets it," Stephenson said.

And it's inspiring American women to emulate her style.

    Dear Robin,

One sermon out of thousands. The kids learned about God, is that okay with you? What child abuse, you're a moron.

When is CNN going to do a story admitting that the whole "global warming" scare is a hoax and that all you nitwits who bought into it are fools?

Please pick another designer, this one is not good. She dresses like a twenty year old. The first lady should be dignified, not dawdy, but dignified. This Pinto woman does not design good clothes–they are hoochie momma clothes and you can do much better.

"And while Michelle wears designer clothes, they in no way compare to the $100,000 outfits that McCains wife adorns."

So what? Oh, lets hate people because they have money oh no!

Grow up. Who cares what they wear...the could be in a burlap sack for all I care...what are they actually going to DO...

    Deval Patrick anyone?

    Dave, in Illinois,

While I might agree with your sentiment, please double check YOUR OWN spelling and GRAMMAR. Blogging, texting, and instant messaging has caused a serious problem in this generation by letting them get by without checking their spelling and grammar, but if you are going to complain about it, at least get your own correct!

@ Debby: Don't feel snuckered (Whatever on earth THAT means, LOL!). Might feel disgusted if I were now reading about McCain's vacation at one of his (HOW many??) homes, and Palin's wardrobe budget. This would all be fine and dandy if it were YOUR candidate, but it's somehow deplorable since it's not. Grow up.

OK, so we are going to compare a $3000 dress to the $350,000 ensemble Cindy McCain wore to the GOP convention? Our future First Lady does have money - not nearly as much as Cindy - so she doesn't HAVE to buy off the rack. The fact that she does sometimes is a nice indicator, I think.

Besides, many designers will lend or outright give clothes to influential people - it's great advertising. That's why you'll hear people yelling at the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards "who are you wearing?" a lot. The jewelry, the clothes, even the shoes are usually loaned. Once the President Elect is inaugurated, the First Lady will no longer be able to accept gifts, but she can accept loans of clothes, and probably will wear several outfits that day, including a ball dress (maybe 2) for all the parties.

Please do not compare my First Lady to Cindy McCain. I don't care how much she pays for her clothes, she still looks like a sneakly alley cat.

Rick in WA "Time to put our disagreements behind us now the Barky is in? Not on your life. Vigilance is required not more than ever. Dissent is not as much fun when the shoe is on the other foot, is it?"

Rick, vigilance is a good and necessary thing. However, the paranoia that some of you have as a result of Obama being our next president is unhealthy! "Dissent" is never fun – necessary sometimes, but not fun! Many of us wait until there is a valid reason to disagree with someone's actions/philosophies and believe me, Bush gave us many! We can all agree that the surge in Iraq has succeeded on some level, however, the point being...we should never have been there in the first place – it was an unjustified occupation based upon the information (lies) given us by Bush. We have lost thousands of soldiers as a result! Good reasons for dissention! So be intelligent when exercising these wonderful rights we have as Americans, not just because you've blindly judged a man to be unworthy of your support.

Not a big fan of her style. I do like the fact that she wears things off the rack and wears color. As First Lady I would hope she would jazz it up a bit.
