CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Michelle Obama turned the campaign trail into a runway this year, sporting eye-catching colors and feminine cuts that sent fashion bloggers buzzing.

As she coupled chic designer splurges with off-the-rack goodies from J. Crew, H&M, White House/Black Market and Target, fashion spectators say her ability to make a strong statement on a budget sends an important message during tough economic times.

Watch: Michelle Obama, First Lady fashion icon?

"Michelle Obama can't be too over the top; she has to be recession chic all the way," style expert Mary Alice Stephenson said. In a soured economy, the choices she made throughout the campaign show that "she gets it," Stephenson said.

And it's inspiring American women to emulate her style.

    Noah..........Expensive clothes do not make the woman. Michelle Obama is young, beautiful, fit and can wear anything she wants. Her skin color is perfect; she does not need a make up artist to make her presentable; and she is so educated.

    Clothes do not make a person, actions and words speak volumes. The "first lady" was once not proud to be an American now she is the "first lady" Ooops just threw up a little in my mouth...............

    Let's see how they both hold up under the pressure of ruining, strike that running the country. I don't care if she is wearing a paper bag, she is not fit to live in MY house in Washington.

    We have more important things in this country to focus on than what someone will be wearing to a "Inauguration"! I am more concerned about our countries economy than what Mrs. Obama decides to wear. For God sake "let it go"!

    That dress Michele has on does not do her justive. She needs one to emphasise her upper body. she would look great in a cramy ivory, a muted silver, white, royal blue, pale pink rose, red but not a flashy hue, soft lavender, peach with a touch of tangerrine and of couse black my all time favorite. I love to mix colors and Michele has very nice skin tine. the color she has on in this phot does not do anything for her,. She needs vibrant clear colors. I hope her wardrobe will make her a great First Lady but her atitude nad personality will make the person. Good luck but please get another designer.

    Michelle Obama is a very beautiful woman – she'd look great in just about anything she wore. Her smile, intelligence and obvious inner-happiness make her radiant!

    GL,

    What does Sarah Palin have to do with Mrs. Obama?

    Oh and Anonymous, My dad is black, my mom is white. Guess that would make me the Republican version of Barack.

    Jackie in Dallas: my late father in law used to say some people would complain if you hung them with a new rope. That is so true of some today, including myself at times. Michele will never be a Laura Bush but she has potential. I did not know she was an alcholic and Obama used cocaine but is that not right up there wih those talking about Gov. Palin's future sone ion law's mother doing drigs. What is the difference? the media picked up on it fast becasue anything they can do to discredit Gov Pali nwill go on and on and on. Obama, Michele, palin'sa future son in law and all the ones people complai about are not doing it now so will they forver be crucified for theri past? Where is forgiveness. Jesus came into the world not to condemm the world but to sace it. this is His season and reason.

    Michelle Obama looks like a living, breathing human being.

    Cindy McCain...?... not so much.

    I think viewers enjoy seeing living people as models, not botox zombies.

    I sincerely hope Michelle Obama trashed that horrible red and black abomination she wore on election night. I also hope she did not spend big money for it. She really got ripped off if she did. Oh, when she gets all dolled up for the Inauguration, I hope she humbly apologizes to the American people for the slap in the face she gave us when Obama won the nomination. She stated this was the first time in her adult life she was proud to be an American. Seems like when she has a chance at becoming first lady, she suddenly becomes proud of being American. This means only one thing, her pride can be bought and being the next first lady is the price. Frankly, if that's how she feels, I'd rather have her not proud and not first lady.

    Michelle Obama won't be paid for the work she does as first lady and I expect to see her dressed in the best designer's clothes on January 20th, she deserves it.

    Personally, I really like that Ms. Obama can be so stylish on a budget. I've got no problems that she shops at J. Crew and Target. For a budget-conscious country, that's a great way to show (for lack of a better word) leadership. I'm not wild about the blue dress she's wearing in the article's photo, but generally, she looks great.

    I certainly hope she keeps up with her "budget" shopping. I really think it appeals to a lot of people.

    Geez, some of you people are just plain vicious and mean. Honestly, some of you need to go wash your mouths out with soap. Didn't your parents teach you anything about respect or civility?? Why do you need to be so hateful and mean? Does it make you feel superior to put someone else down?? There are a lot of people on here who need to seriously GROW UP.

    Noah, don't hate the player hate the game. You lost the game, get over it. Micheele is THE FIRST LADY like it or not. America couldn'y afford supporting the free loading Palins. Micheele doesn't have to borrow, steal or lie. She earned her wardrobe through hard work and intelligence. Get over it. Get over it! Get over it!

    @ lonette33, Michelle dresses in what “she” likes;

    @Wow, lonette33, and all others who compares; no Michelle Obama is not Jackie Kennedy Onasis – Michelle is very much a lady and talks nicely to ALL people. Michelle does not “cuss-like-a-sailor” as Jackie did; but you all will not talk about that.

    @billy-bayou, the photo shows two beautiful WOMEN; not the cross-dressers you deal with because no decent woman, Negro or Caucasian will deal with the likes of you.

    @Huh????, HUH?

    @naqib, you cannot compare your trailer to the Obamas’ home; whatever “discount” they received they still PAID for the extra land they wanted so they could have more yard space. Get a job and a life, loser.

    @WIlly Brown, you got that one right buddy; Michelle is a real-life educated professional, wife and mother and soon-to-be first lady; june cleaver was and still is a fictitious uneducated tv persona you obviously wish your mom was. GET REAL!

    @Dan, FL, if you are going to “quote” get it right. Michelle said “for the first time in my adult life I am REALLY proud to be an American.” Just the facts, Dan, just the facts.

    @Kevin in Ohio, Michelle is patriotic and trustworthy – what about you? Were you in Oregon two Fridays ago or was it your cousins?

    @Pete, yes, you are crazy and jealous and probably not a man. LOL

    @Noah, people who do not have fashion sense should NEVER attempt to ridicule what someone wears. Ironically, those flower prints were designers. Cindy McCain was not a better dresser, she put on more EXPENSIVE clothing – that’s all.
