Obama greets military troops, families on Christmas

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/POLITICS/12/26/obama.holiday/art.obamaxmas.gi.jpg caption="President-elect Obama shakes hands with troops having Christmas dinner at a military base in Hawaii."] (CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama visited military personnel and their families enjoying Christmas dinner at a Marine Corps base in Hawaii Thursday during his holiday vacation.

Obama went to Marine Corps Base Hawaii Kaneohe Bay on Oahu where he mingled with Marines and sailors. Obama and the troops also had a traditional dinner including turkey, roast beef, ham and trimmings.

Obama, dressed casually in a blue polo shirt and dark khaki trousers, chatted casually, shook hands and posed for photos with men and women in the dining hall, which had been decorated with Christmas trees and Santa figurines.

Shortly before Obama entered the room, a Marine shouted to the crowd scattered across 25 tables, "You need to take you seats, the president-elect is going to be coming."

Obama, who spent about an hour at the Marine base, worked his way around the room, table by table.

"Just wanted to say, 'Hi, hey guys,'" Obama said at one point while reporters were allowed in the room.

"Hey guys, Merry Christmas," he said to another group.

This makes him a great leader?? Just another in a long line of political stunts that we will get from the man who's political career was born in the cesspool of Chicago politics.

He probably should have spend some time with the homeless. They do have them in Hawaii. The troops will do just fine without him.

Greg, You must remember, he did not do it on his own. He had plenty of cameras ready at hand for the visit. If he wanted to do it with no publicity, he could have managed that.

Isn't this what the President - the Commander in Chief - is supposed to be doing? Where is that paragon of patriotism, anyway? Polishing up his lapel pin?

greg, I have no doubt at all about his patriotism. I think he is probably a very patriotic person. What I doubt is his wife's patriotism, considering she had never been proud to be an American until he won the nomination and she knew she had a shot at becoming the first lady. No apology from her regarding this statement, so I take that to mean she meant every word she said. Sad to think this how our future first lady feels.

It's nice to see that P.E. Obama leads by example. He has done so from the beginning.

I'd like to see President Obama send Bill Richardson to India to help avert a conflict with Pakistan. I know Hillary is his choice for the state department yet these two are nuke powers and mortal enemies which Bill knows and has experience. When it comes to nukes America doesn't have time for OJT!!!

this is a nice story about our next president, BUT you can bet some far right Limbaugh/Hannity lovers will find SOMETHING negative about it like they usually do. They haven't started yet I see but just give them time. Sad really sad indeed.

I don't know why everyone keeps saying we have a "commander in chief we can be proud of".

As a former military man.....let me tell you there is nothing about Obama that makes me proud.

He has accomplished nothing in his life except winning elections and graduating from Harvard.

Bring Them Home, I believe these troops might argue with the "get them out of there" and "we should have never been there" statements. They are in Hawaii. As for the troops in Iraq, they will be home by May 20, 2009. That's 16 months from inauguration, right?

This was a nice thing Obama did. It is a shame that there are idiots out there that didn't make a new year's resolution to speak positively.

Wow, a lot of negativity on this blog from the GOPers. No matter what Obama does, these folks will not be happy. I noticed a couple comments about Obama flying to Hawaii on the taxpayers' dime. Where did you get that idea? Rush, Hannity? Got proof? Hawaii is where he was born and raised. This is home to him and where he goes for family holidays. Get off it, folks, your jealously and hate are showing.

Let it go. That is not what she meant. And she HAS explained what she meant about a hundred times. But it sounds like you stopped listening to anything she had to say after that.

Anyway. Way to go President elect Obama.
I can now say, I am pround of my country AGAIN. After being hated by the rest of the world for the last 7 years because of the idiot that has resided in the white house.

HAVEN'T BEEN IN THE MILITARY BUT MY DAD WAS FOR 16 YEARS.

I CAN TELL YOU FOR A FACT, THAT THESE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE

ELATED TO HAVE A "COMMANDER IN CHIEF" INSTEAD OF THE

"MORON IN THIEF" WE HAVE HAD FOR 8 MISERABLE YEARS.

IMAGINE RISKING YOUR VERY LIFE FOR THE ENRICHMENT OF

THE POCKETS OF BUSH, HIS LOBBYISTS,HIS FAMILY & FRIENDS.
