(CNN) - A lobbyist who was romantically linked to Sen. John McCain in a New York Times article has sued the paper for $27 million, saying the story has damaged her career and "sense of personal self-worth."
Vicki Iseman sued the New York Times Company and writers and editors who worked on the front-page story, which she said falsely intimated she had an affair with the senator and used their relationship to gain perks for her clients.
"The damage to Ms. Iseman caused by the story has continued to the present and has not abated," the lawsuit said. "The article destroyed the heart and soul of Ms. Iseman's professional identity and sense of personal self-worth."
The Times issued a statement saying it stands by the story, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
The lawsuit charges that The New York Times acted with negligence and malice in publishing the article, having "utterly failed to find evidence supporting their preconceived hypothesis that Sen. McCain and Ms. Iseman had a romantic relationship."
The lengthy report, which ran February 21, said McCain aides became so concerned about the relationship between the two that they blocked her access to the senator during his first campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.
The lawsuit details comments that reporters and editors from other media outlets made about the story in which they said the Times implied an inappropriate or romantic relationship.

I HOPE THE LADY SUES NYT AND WINS THEY DESERVE WHAT THEY GET FOR THE WAY THEY TREATE SARAH PALIN. SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST VP OR PRES. FOR THE USA
Just scum tabloid writing that should be found in a paper like the National Inquirer... I am a lib and I think that trashing "private" citizens should be a crime (well I guess getting sued kinda makes it a crime, in a way)...
I find this POSSIBLE ROMANTIC interest Funny as Hell!
To say that McCain is a "Romantic interest" of this younger pretty woman is laughable at best.
He's an OLD barely viagra man and she is a young woman who could do MUCH better!
Its laughable NOT damaging. NYT needs to stick to what IS wrong with America..not make stuff up!
First question is WAS she romantically involved with him? We know he has a history...i.e., how he left wife 1 for the beer babe after wife 1 got messed up in a car accident.
I believe them especially if theyre standing by it but i want to see proof lol. Ew who would want to be with MCCAIN- yuck x100
Sen McCain brought this on himself with his past record of womanizing. What does his first wife have to say? Anyone want to take a chance and ask her?
I wonder if any of you have even bothered to read the original article in the NYT. It does not say that she definitively had an affair. It says that McCain staffers feared there was a "perception" of impropriety.
Before commention, read the original article, idiots.
This woman is a disgrace and should be run out of town along with all the right wing God clingers.
No matter what newspaper the story came from, if someone (man or woman) cheats WITH you, he/she will also cheat ON you. Mccain's advisors in 2000 should come out in public to confirm or deny this story. IMO, Vicki is looking for cold hard cash, but money can't restore her "sense of personal self-worth." That can only come from within. She's barking up the wrong tree. She need therapy to regain her "sense of personal self-worth."
Oh hey, you unlocked the 'Add Comments", I thought 11 comments was pretty small.
So, why does she do this now instead of Nov 5?
Noah, David, Rohde, you're all the same person aren't you? Your posts suggest you graduated from a bible-thumper school. Your ignorance is so fundamental, it's that or you likely didn't make it through an accredited high school.
Too bad the Ayrian Nation compound in Sandpoint, Idaho was bulldozed, they would have given you a home there.
Here we going taking the right and left side of anything political, lets wait for the outcome before we judge the NYT or V. Iseman. This name may ring a bell when a certain paper reported on him "JOHN EDWARDS" but it doesn't matter to the right or the left because people think their opinion is the only one that matters right.
Directed to the 11 people who have commented so far.
Some of these comments crack me up...especially the person who thinks a $27 mil. law suit will force the NYT's into bankruptcy.
I'm still waiting for Pickens to pay out on his promise after the Swift Boat Attacks were proven false. Like the NYT or not, they're not known for running bogus stories...far less than most major papers.
The list of politicians guilty of what McCain was accused of is a mile long. I question why anyone cares.
You notice that John McCain is not trying to sue them, he is probably the one who leaked the story......
The NYT was pro maverick [non conservative] McCain until it was apparent he had the nomination. The NYT then did all it could to sink him without regard to facts. They endorsed Obama as the education candidate but would not investigate his Annenberg activities in Chicago. NYT = dying partisan rag.
Countdown until the crazy Right-Wingers blame the left for everything they don't like. Who has been in power the last 8 years? Are you better off now than 8 years ago?... Didn't think so!
Well, it wouldn't be the first time McCain's done this....such an honorable man.
The NYT does not print without fact checking – if the facts are wrong then the Times was being lied to by all their sources?! Since they are standing by the story, this tells me that they feel they have credible facts and their sources believed there was something more going on.
The liberal media had been way too far to legitimate everything for their own candidate during the election. I hope Ms. Iseman will win and give the lesson to other liberal media for what they had done during the election.
If Ms. Iseman wins, I think Senator McCain has the right to also sue NYT even much bigger because the damage that NYT has caused to the senator was much much bigger than Ms. Iseman's damage.
Wendy,
Former President Clinton was impeached for commiting perjury, not for his indiscretions.
Please Noah, just like many repubs who spend their days on here bashing liberals and Obama 24/7.
I guess I could be considered a liberal, but I don't blame this woman, true or not, I could care less who sleeps with who.
Hmmm ... she could be Cindy McCain's daughter!
This is not news. McCain has always been a Womanizer...ask Carol McCain!
Actually, this will never go to trial. The 27 Million is a figure guaranteed to produce a settlement as opposed to trial.
Civil litigation will go on for about 2-3 years for discovery and if it goes to trial the NY Times will appeal, and that adds another 5-7 years.
She has a strong case. They will settle or NY Times will file bankruptcy.
Hmmm..., Ms. Iseman looks kind of like Cindy McCain.
Did anyone see the round table on MSNBC where Chris Mathews blasted the media for not sending teams of reporters to Chicago to investigate Obama last summer?
Wasn't he the guy that reported shivers up his leg after he heard Obama speak?
