Sources: Gupta approached for surgeon general's post

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/06/art.gupta.cnn.jpg caption="Gupta is a former White House fellow."] (CNN) - Chief CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta has been approached by the Obama administration about the U.S. surgeon general's post, according to sources inside the transition and at CNN.

Watch: John King on Dr. Gupta

The transition team is impressed with the combination of Gupta's past government experience, as a White House fellow and a special adviser to then-first lady Hillary Clinton, along with his medical career as a neurosurgeon and his communication skills, the transition source said.

Gupta has declined comment on the matter.

CNN released a statement saying, "Since first learning that Dr. Gupta was under consideration for the surgeon general position, CNN has made sure that his on-air reporting has been on health and wellness matters and not on health-care policy or any matters involving the new administration."

Emilia Jones...are you for real? You think that b/c Barack is half black that he should hire mainly black candidates? That would be rather racist of him, wouldn't it? He's hiring who he thinks would do the best job! It's silly of you not to vote for him b/c of that.

    I like Sanjay Gupta.

If he leaves CNN, we the viewers won't see him and his reports anymore.

I think he has more to offer the public at CNN than he does behind a desk as yet another government figure.

    Tell them "NO," Sanjay!

I think Dr. Gupta would be a very good choice...I am smiling on this one. Another good choice would be Dr. Benjamin Carson, M.D., a leading neurosurgeon at John Hopkins.

@Obama-Mama, Ease up on the sugar, Dr Gupta I'm sure would agree, its not good for you. Maybe you could post something intelligent, instead of just displaying your schoolgirl like glee. Does your mommy know you are using the computer?

Obama must be the most cynical man to ever be elected president. "Hmmm, I need a surgeon general that the mindless bufoons who voted for me will like....Ah Ha!! A celebrity doctor who works for CNN.. 2 birds with one stone. THe masses will like this guy because he's a TV peronality, and CNN will give me another round of adoring coverage."

Too bad Russia, China,Iran, Al-Queida, and Hamas don't play these childish games Obama is so fond of. They are going to eat this idiot alive.

unfortunately for you Emilia Jones, and fortunately for the rest of the American population, the qualifications for Government positions are not based on the color of skin. Get over yourself.

"Emilia Jones"- What is your problem? Grow up and get off the blogs. What did your mama teach you? If you can't say something nice............ This is a time for ALL people to come together. Not just blacks or dark skinned blacks (what the hell does that mean?). OBAMA doesn't only "owe" blacks, he owes ALL RACES of the United States to make good on his promises. We ALL came together as one and voted him next POTUS. Get a life and learn how to spell definitely (NOT deffinately). One more thing, OBAMA is "appointing" people and it has nothing to do with appointments! Stop being divisive and trying to start the "race" crap on the blogs. Get a life! UGH!
