Senior senator blunt on Burris 'mess'

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/12/art.burris12.gi.jpg caption="Burris visited Capitol Hill last week."](CNN) - A senior Democratic senator told CNN Monday the Senate was moving toward seating Roland Burris because "when you're dealt a losing hand, you skip to the end."

The senator, who asked not to be quoted by name because of the sensitivties of the situation, called the current situation a "mess" that Democratic leaders are anxious to end, and said that a leading idea is to seat Burris "without prejudice" - which, under Senate rules, would allow them the ability to revisit the issue, since Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is in such uncertain legal territory.

Another senior Democratic source insists the details on how to seat Burris haven't been decided.

But given the assessment of the senior senator, and remarks made by Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin Sunday, it doesn't appear Burris will go through the lengthy process Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Durbin described last week - marking an apparent reversal by Democratic leaders.

What a disgrace to the state of Illinois, and definitely a blow to the democratic party. Burris will not be able to be re-elected in 2010. The republicans will take his seat.

Surely by now the Democrats are getting tired of covering for Harry Reid, whose school-m'arm like attitudes are making them look worse every day.

On the other hand, the doings in the US Senate have been reduced to soap opera status for some time now.

    Talking about lowering the bar!

This is so funny, the democrats can't run their own party how will they run the USA.

Obama and Carter have something in common, a single 4 year term.

    YES HE CAN............CHANGE

I may have been a bit premature in my declaration the the seat was lost.

Burris is a clown, but since the senate is already a circus they may as well let him in. Nobody has any confidence in our congress anymore anyway.

It is not worth it, Mr.Burris. Please quit. God will bless you.

Not much choice, Reid. This is what happens when you're wrong and not slick enough to get away with the lie. Victory for the people.

The idiot Democrats in the senate don't understand legal precedent. There is NO legal basis for denying Burris a seat. They would lose in the Federal Courts.

Let the guy in for now and if any proof of "Pay to Play" then put him in jail for life. Anyway based on ever national election Burris has run for the great people of IL has rejected and I suspect they will in 2010.

We all knew that Burris would be seated when it became obvious that Blago would blow the whistle and expose all of Obama's many "dirty little secrets" if Burris was not seated.

    The coverup continues.

I think they should give Mr. Burris a chance. I know, I know, it is tainted but he may turn out to be a good Senator for the State of Illinois.

Now we'll see what kind of job the Governor gets when he gets impeached. That will tell whether Burris had anything to do with the scandal, or not.

  14. Objective thinking

chris@stl: The sad thing is that Burris has shown more consistency than the Senate Dems. You want flip-floppers or you want consistent people? Also note that throughout this whole thing, no one has implicated Burris in pay-to-play politics. And since Blagojevich chose him AFTER he was arrested for corruption, it makes sense that Blagojevich didn't choose him because he was dirty enough to pay, but rather because he was clean enough to make it tough for the Senate to turn him away.

I just hope someone asks Burris how much his seat cost. David Patterson may be curious to see what he can get.

  16. Dems are cowards

The democrats in the Senate are all cowards. Here is another loser speaking from the shadows and refusing to stand up in the bright lights and speak publicly and stand behind his words. Senators who do this are nothing but cowards and the American people deserve more from their leaders. The GOP will have a senate majority by the mid term elections if the Dems continue to fall all over themselves.

It appears that 98% of the population outside of DC understand that Senator Burris's apointment is legal; it has been confirmed by the IL Supreme COurt; and by the IL Senate and House. As the state has sole authority of who it send to DC, these Dem senators operating from the shadows should BACK OFF and start dealing with the huge mees this country is in

Burris was all against Blago naming someone...until Blago named him.

    Being a self-centered opportunist....that's the Chicago Way!

Look for 4 years of this kind of crap. If one wacky governor can outsmart the entire Democratic party, how will they ever cope with Russia, Iran, and Hamas? Be afraid, be very afraid.

Basically one can say that the senate is filled with little courage, and little character. Once your a member you can do anything, and the gutless wonders with you are afraid to say boo. This Roland Burris situation is a chance for you to act as though you are squeaky clean, and above such things. Why didn't you open your mouths about Ted Stevens, or the disgusting silence when you had a standing ovation for him. Many of you have forgotten, or never knew that you work for the American people. All of you have contributed to the dire situation our country is now facing. I'm a Democrat, but do not have much respect for either party now.

What people do not get is that the problem is that Blagojevich LOST his right to appoint any one to the senate when he attempted to sell the seat!
So his appointment of Burris IS tainted!

All you far-right-nuts will be eating crow when OBAMA SUCCEEDS!

    January 12, 2009 11:19 am at 11:19 am |
  23. I see the change already

I see the change that Mr Obama promised. The Democratic House and senate are changing right before our eyes - they are morphing into a band of helpless, disorganized, clueless, children.

Thank you Senator Reid – for insuring that the GOP will be back in power by the mid terms. Never have so few Dems, done so much in such a short period of time to hurt so many

Burris should be seated provisionally pending a 'reappointment' from Blagojevich's successor.

They should just let him in. They are so worried about looking bad that they are getting in their own way and bumbling around foolishly, ironically looking worse than if they would just seat him and be done with it. Let's face it, these Chicago politicians are crooked. But, we have to put up with them for 4 years at least.
