A major Bush rule gets scrapped by Obama

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/21/art.ovaloffice.cnn.jpg caption="What’s missing in this picture?"] (CNN) - It's the same Oval Office. The same desk. Even the same curtains. But President Obama has already made one major change: Go through eight years of White House photos, and you won't find one of former President Bush in the Oval Office without his jacket on.

It wasn't just a personal preference. In the Bush administration, it was a rule: Jackets in the Oval Office - and now, it seems, one of the first Bush-era regulations to get scrapped in the Obama White House.

- CNN's John King contributed to this report

Obama can dress up or dress down in the Oval Office. I really don't care as long as he does a good job. That remains to be seen.

Oh enough you nutters. If CNN hadn't pointed out that Bush had the "must wear jacket rule" and they had just shown the picture of Obama in his shirt sleeves and tie, no one, NO ONE would have even noticed.

This story is a lot more than symbolic- for 8 years we've had a president who would have rather spent more time in Texas, always left work by 6 even when our country was suffering, and never really made enough of an effort to take off his jacket.

Barack Obama has shown time and time again that he is ready to take up the challenges that have been left to him, and he is ready to roll up his sleeves and REALLY get to work.

Not a bad suggestion from Dick c, maybe some KFC buckets thrown about the office could generate sales which could save a few jobs in this country. Maybe a few Circuit City banners on the wall behind the desk in the Oval Office could help save 30,000 jobs immediately. Why be offended about a jacket, use the office to advertise if not for work.

Where's my comment, biased CNN? Didn't like it because I criticized Barack Hussein Obama because of his ridiculous ignorance and lack of Manners and Courtesies and Respect?

Why is this news? The President makes his own rules about what can be worn in the oval office. I know, let's use the media's (and apparently Pat Leahy's as well) favorite word, historic. President Obama is the first African American President to have his picture taken in the oval office without a jacket, wearing a blue tie and white shirt. Could this be more HISTORIC? Why yes. He's talking on the TELEPHONE... and holding it in his LEFT hand. Pardon me while I faint.

I just surprise how empty his desk is. With all the problems we have, I'd imagine there should be tons of things on his desk. Who cares if he wears a jacket or not. It's HIS office.

  19. A peeved Christian Centrist

@Robert – when will we ever hear an end to "Godly this and God that" when it comes to our country? We are a nation who's built on freedom of (and if desired – FROM) religion, not on Christianity. Our nation was built on values of fairness and freedom. While this may intersect with basic religious values, which is fine and dandy, they are not exclusive to them. This nation was not founded as a Christian nation, and while they acknowledged a higher being, they never called one out specifically, nor did they base our code of laws on religion. We are simply founded on values that are there to promote, at their most basic level, freedom, something the actual PRACTICE of religion these days leaves a bit to be desired. Our founding fathers valued freedom and enlightenment, two things that modern fundamentalism (regardless of which religious sect we're talking about, right wing Christianity included) are hard at work at oppressing. I would think that if they saw what has been going on in this country over the last several years, they'd have every right to give us all a little smack down.

Anyhow, welcome home Mr. President. Lord knows we need your help.

For god's sake he is our President and learn to respect him.
I don't know if there is any living organism on this planet who will miss Bush.
We had a chimp in the white house for past 8 years.. what did he do ????
You ask us to respect him because he's the President but you immediately insult teh last President to occupy the Oval office.

Dickie dearest heart, why such animosity? Everybody likes KFC. Not just African-Americans. I'd bet your pickup truck that even your after-hours fantasy Mary Magdalene Palin likes herself some KFC. Don't let the world beat you down. It's going to be okay. Keep the faith, you are somebody’s hero.

  25. hungry for real news

OMG! The President took off his jacket while sitting in the Oval Office!! That's it! The country's going to hell ina handbasket already!!

C'mon CNN! Could you possibly make yourselves look anymore ridiculous than reporting on such a trivial matter. Who cares that he took off his jacket as long as he's doing the job. It's no wonder Americans are so ignorant of what is happening beyond its borders when this is considered important news.
