What's next for Guantanamo Bay detainees?

(CNN) - With President Barack Obama limiting how and where detainees at Guantanamo Bay can be interrogated, some analysts are asking if intelligence agencies will be able to get the information they need to keep the country safe - and where the prisoners will eventually end up.
Fresh off his inauguration, Obama issued executive orders relating to Guantanamo, including one requiring that the detention facility be closed within a year.
During a signing ceremony at the White House on January 22, Obama reaffirmed his inauguration pledge that the United States does not have "to continue with a false choice between our safety and our ideals."
The president said he was issuing the order to close the facility in order to "restore the standards of due process and the core constitutional values that have made this country great even in the midst of war, even in dealing with terrorism."
At its peak, Gitmo held 770 people the U.S. government believed may have been involved in terrorist activity or military action against the nation. The facility drew sharp criticism, including from Obama as he campaigned for the presidency.

Please realize the 11% or so already released and back to fighting the US were released by the prior administration. It is my understanding the remaining detainees' cases are to be reviewed by a military board of some kind and determined if they are to be held over for trial.
If any has a different understanding or better knowledge of the exed order, I hope you share it on this blog.
Might consider sending them to live in Chicago........... Would serve them right!

Maybe if you put them in Chicago, them and the thugs that gave us Obama can knock each other off.
Many of them are innocent, until proven guilty. The European Union already said that they would take some who would be at risk in their owhn country. Those proven guilty by law should remain in jail in the U.S. What's so difficult about all this ? Respect of habeas corpus and OUR consitution !

Are you two totally off the planet? The issues here have a direct bearing on your civil rights and our position as the leader of the free world. All you attitudes do is foster hate and the mean spirit of the republican party. Think, Think, Think.
Let's see.
Those who are innocent of anything, or are just mad at the US due to the time that they are dettained without any charge or accusation against them, can return to their country and, if it's too dangerous for them to do so, there are countries that already said that will accept them.
Those who have any solid accusations against them will face trial, a legitimate one either civilian or military (and not the kangaroo court that GWB wanted that they had), and if found guilty will serve time or will be executed. But only after a due legal process.
See? It's not that hard to follow the Constitution, which contrary to the neocons common senses, DO applies to the dettainees.
SEND THEM TO THE WHITE HOUSE
Well, Obama releases the terrorists...they go home, kiss their wives goodbye then head out to kill more Americans. I think the Navy needs to have a "training accident" over Gitmo in the near future. Better that than letting Obama sic his buddies on us again.
It is so popular an idea why won't Pelosi take them into Alcatraz??

You know, we'll take those detainees for crying out loud. If people don't want them, we'll take them! Man, I think I've heard more questions being asked than during Bush's 2 years for crying out loud. Gotta teach my boy how to lie with style. So, if any of our government officials or lobbyists need help, we're open for business! You know, if Citi or Bank of America CEo's or even chairman wanna buy some cool jets or a cool house, we are open for business without getting information leaked. Is expensive but don't you wanna get the american people upset? Or don't wanna let the people find out what you are wasting our money? Just tell us where to meet, we'll be there, LOL!!

That would be nice, Ben in Dallas - IF the terorists "bought" into "civil rights." Of course they don't - so go spin your "idealism" somewhere in Iran - they'll get a good laugh out of it!
Good guys have rules, bad guys don't.
Rules, honor, code - these are what defines the good guys.
When good guys capture bad guys in a war, they're not supposed to torture.
Even if it's not a war, you go through the motions - arrest them, charge them, put them on trial, get a verdict.
What Bush and company did was unAmerican, unConstitutional and unAcceptable.
Do we just let the people go? No, we can't. Not now. We have no idea how many people held in Gitmo are guilty. Why? No trials. They've been held indefinitely - oh, right, that's unConstitutional as well. There are reports of American citizens being held indefinitely, not charged, not allowed a lawyer - again, unConstitutional.
Bush did so much damage to this country, closing Gitmo is like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound caused by a Howitzer. Bush turned America into the bad guys. That's inexcuseable and unforgiveable.
I am active duty Navy and will be going to Gitmo soon. I personally think it is not right to close this facility. Why would you take people that are supposed to be a threat to our country, and put them IN country in a prison? Does this really make any sense?....Leave this place open...
How about put them in Alaska?? Palin can keep an eye of them too...
WOW, I didn't realize that during war against foreign terrorists, for Ben and Pepou, that means that they are not U.S. citizens, all captured fighters are protected by U.S. Constitutional law. And I thought you had to be a UNITED STATES CITIZEN to enjoy U.S. protection! Who Knew, thanks guys!
Shumway and The Idiot....do you guys read or just repeat stuff you hear? You think Obama is just going to shut down Gitmo and let them all out, without due process? Come on. Gitmo and torturing has fueled the the terrorists movements and done more harm than good. For many of the detainess, there is little (if any) evidence that they are even threatening terrorists.
Let's throw them a little barbecue and ask fior their forgivness.
John Murtha said we could put them in a local prison here. It's okay with me, provided we get to put that slime of a representative in a cell right next to them.
