White House press office hit by e-mail outage

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/POLITICS/01/22/obama.blackberry/art.obamabb.gi.jpg caption="Staff for the new, wired president found themselves without e-mail Monday."]

President Obama has his blackberry — but his tech-savvy press operation has been without e-mail for most of the day, and it’s not yet clear when they’ll get it back.

Obama press staffers had just made the leap to their official White House e-mail addresses Monday morning when the Outlook server went down. They weren’t the only ones affected by the crash, which also hit the first lady’s office and other White House offices.

An apologetic Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters at 1:30 pm press briefing that the server meltdown was responsible for the delay in responding to their e-mailed questions. But late Monday, nearly six hours since the server first went haywire, staffers still can’t use their official e-mail addresses — and a press aide could not tell CNN when the press office might be able to start sending and receiving messages again.

It concerns me that in today's world, the white house press operation does not have a better Disaster Recovery plan. Are they hiring?

Sounds to me like someone in the past administration put in a virus which took out the server. I guess removing the O's from keyboards didn't strike them as being enough of a joke...either that or Jeff is right.

As for the "long nightmare", people who think this way should just listen to Rush on the radio and not bother their little minds with news that might make them think.

Well, we certainly can't blame Obama's guys. They run a modern campaign involving current technology, then Bush doesn't let him into the White house, and when he does, they find that not only are the computers there like the W White house- old and busted – but nobody can explain why the Bush folleys didn't use technology. I bet a few reports in .pdf format would have helped Bush clue into that "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US" memo.

The Bush Administration: A unending curse on Washington.

Rick, shut up and get off the blogs. You are the only nightmare (along with the other Obama haters) living anymore. Jumping off of a bridge is an option that you have since you hate our new administration so much! Don't delay another minute, you must do it now!

  18. GET REAL.

    Rick January 26th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

After watching Gibbs stumble through three press briefings now I'm convinced that the entire Obumbler administration has no idea what they're doing. The long national nightmare has just begun.

This guy (and others of his ilk) can't win. Anyway you look at it, these ridiculous posters are the most hypocritical people I've ever seen:

If you're trying to get us afraid, you're by definition a "terror"ist. Go on a j1had and leave the board alone. You're no better than the people your idol W. wanted to fight.

If you want Obama to fail in his efforts for this country, you want to this country to fall, hence you're by definition "unpatriotic," so leave and go live somewhere else or support the current admin. I can't speak for other people, but: despite hating Bush, I still wanted to see him make this country strong.

If you're just putting crap on the boards to spam everyone and try to sound superior, you're a little man with a little mind, an immature troll, so your mother must have either neglected you or raised you with no respect. Horrible woman.

Don't you people even care about your lives? If not, go back to watching "Fight Club" and pretending you're real men.

Oh Rick have you been living in a cave for the past 8 years? Or do you hate prosperity, freedom, honesty, and equality? If you think Obama is the beginning of a national nightmare and not the team in the HazMat suits called in to fumigate after the horror of Cheney/Bush than I suspect you are either a member of the Bush/Cheney axis of evil, unbelievably out of touch, or just a masochist.

Rick, the "national nightmare" started when Bush stole the 2000 Election.

Not hard to find out why it crashed either the computers are old {highly unlikely} or the sever was overloaded, maybe even a D.O.S {Denial Of Service} attack but that seems unlikely as well.

Rick, I think your meds are ready pal.

Rick, can you do a better job. Please run for office if you can do a better job.
President Obama's administration has been in office one week, one week. All of the founding fathers, put together, could not undue the damage done by Dubya in one week.

The White House's email server is powered by Outlook? Next project for Obama is to replace that Outllok server with an open source equivalent. There are lots to choose from, and they are all better than Outlook.

After watching Bush stumble through 8 years of mumble jumble and FEW AND FAR IN BETWEEN press conferences, I am now convinced that 47% of Americans that turned out for stumbling Palin, also had no idea of what she was doing or McCain for that matter.

Can you imagine how McCain and Palin would have handled this economic crisis? Hell they didn't think anything was wrong. All McCain did was move from house to house and Palin bought new clothes. The bad economy apparently didn't affect them negatively.

Move to Canada and spare yourself from this ill-perceived nightmare!

President Obama...let your haters be your motivators!
