(CNN) - In a bid to capitalize on Rush Limbaugh's recent comment that he hopes President Obama "fails," national Democrats launched a petition drive Wednesday taking direct aim at the conservative radio host.
"Jobs, health care, our place in the world - the stakes for our nation are high and every American needs President Obama to succeed," says the petition, sponsored by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Stand strong against Rush Limbaugh's Attacks - sign our petition, telling Rush what you think of his attacks on President Obama."
Limbaugh told listeners last week he sharply disagrees with Republicans who have said they hope Obama succeeds as president, and particularly expressed frustration over what he viewed as the "absorption of as much of the private sector by the US government as possible, from the banking business, to the mortgage industry, the automobile business, to health care."
"If I wanted Obama to succeed, I'd be happy the Republicans have laid down," Limbaugh said. "I hope he fails."
The comment sparked outrage in Democratic circles, while defenders of the remark said it was made purely in the context of Obama's economic polices.
Still, the DCCC petition not only provides an outlet for Democratic anger at Limbaugh, but also serves as a vehicle to gain names and e-mail addresses, presumably for later use in fundraising and organizing efforts.
The petition follows reports Obama warned GOP congressional leaders last week that they should stop listening to the conservative talker, prompting Limbaugh’s response that the new president is "frightened of me."
“He’s obviously more frightened of me than he is [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell,” Limbaugh told listeners Monday. “He’s more frightened of me, then he is of say, [House Minority Leader] John Boehner, which doesn’t say much about our party.”
Continuing to read, and I have to agree that we need to respect the first amendment all the time, not just when it suits one party or the other. Rush is just as big a lying bag of crap to democrats as, I don't know, Bill Maher (?) is to the republicans. Ya gotta love the way the conservatives love the first amendment; it allowed the Bush administration to label as unpatriotic anyone that questioned them on anything. Now there's an exercise in free speech, right from the top. But on prinicple, we (all) must respect the First.
Look at it this way, Limbaugh is an easy target to lampoon due to the sheer transparency of his exploitative manipulations. The level of his discourse is one step above a playground fight, and like we ignore the rantings of little kids, we should ignore his infantile vituperation.
Now, let's all shake hands with the lemming-brain ditto-heads and make up.
These people are only giving a false sense of importance to this moron. He and the far left are aboutt he same in my opinion. Useless!
Sorry, I think Rush is a big fat idiot, but I have to take his side on this one – if you read the transcript, he's clearly referring to what he views as the relentless Obama/Democrats' push toward socialism, communism, whatever.
Rush. Rush. Rush.
You are rapidly becoming so irrelevant.
Looks like Limbaugh may be on the pills again. It is Ironic that he is part of a party that claims to be so patriotic...yet he wishes failure on the publicly elected president. Not so patriotic is it Rush?
Dear Fellow Americans,
Mr. Limbaugh is not to be taken seriously at all. This individual is a First Year College "dropout" due to reasons known to himself. And we know the standard of education of a common High School "graduate!" Moreover, this "patriot' successfully evaded the "Draft" through physical challenges known to himself and the pyhsician. He has time and again claimed that he has acquired his knowledge through reading the Encyclopedia!!! Can he deny this? The more one speaks or discusses this physically and mentally disgusting individual, with a limited vocabulary and knowledge, the more "attention" he manages to "accumulate" and further excuses and theme to "howl" upon on his radio nonsense. Who are his audience? Mostly unemployed (or they would be working and have no time to spare for radio comedies) , half-eduacted or semi-literate individuals. I advice this individual to find a job and do something creative and constructive. What does the civilized society and strata think such a being is an easy guess.

Limbaugh speaks the truth. I love how the liberals can't seem to let us forget that they are HUGE advocates for free speech until somone says something they don't agree with.
The new Jesse Jackson?
You say that Rush is out if line saying what he says but on the other hand you support a president that still has ties to the Rev. Wright. Give me a break !!
I only have one question.....why are so many americans scared of socialism??
Rush is right! Deal with it.
No one has to like what this guy says, but no one can argue that he doesn't have the right to free speech.
Someone must enjoy his show if he still has a job, I just wonder who...
Where do I sign the petition? I want to be the first.
Where do I sign!!!!
Rush is Divider, when this country is in desperate need of Uniters.
I need to find the petition QUICK!!! Thank God someone is standing against RUSH for a change!!
I never forgot how he called for riots at the Democratic convention, then quickly recanted the statement when snerdly told him he could be jailed for it.Hes anti-American and lives in a castle in Florida.
I will gladly sign the petition against Limbaugh – an evil-hearted loud mouth fool !!!
Pres. Obama is blessed and NO weapon formed against him by his foes will prevail !
To quote Al Franken, "Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot".
Why does he even have a show? Who listens to his nonsense? He's so nauseating.
SAME OLD LIBERAL HATE!!!!!!!!
Rather than focus on what is really important, fixing the ills of this country, the Democratic leadership gives us grandstanding and ill-concieved petitions. And, of course, the lemmings jump right in line.
Way to go–focusing on the minor issues hoping to deflect from the pressing needs of the nation.
And all you folks commenting on Limbaugh's drug use–did you conveniently forget Obama's past drug use? Love the hypocracy.
Why do you give this blimp so much importance? Most of what he says is nonsense. Why elevate his importance?
Yes, Mr. Limbaugh does have freedom of speech, but my advice for making Mr. Limbaugh go away would be to totally ignore him. I for one do not , nor have I ever listened to his broadcast. I occasionally hear of his remarks through the main stream media (legitimate broadcast) i.e CNN. Don't give him nor his followers the attention they crave. A person cannot argue alone; it takes two. If the majority of the people actually cared and subscribed to Mr. Limbaugh's notions, then we would have an ultra-conservative, right wing, "good ole boy" in office. With all the problems and concerns this country faces, we as Americans should lay our titles ("Dems or Rep" Liberal or Conservative) aside and become AMERICANS trying to help each other.
It is a disgrace to say anyone should fail. A person who would say such a thing has closed their minds and ears to any ideas. When Bush failed to complete his goals, no one wished he should fail. We all wanted him to succeed.
Leaders may not have all the solutions, but no one has the solution for everything. But a good leader listens carefully to others and their ideas. If they have a vision and speak to the audience of the goal, then the audience can work together and create a plan that that will demonstrate progress. We need to stop dividing the nation and pull together and bring this country back. It takes all of us to do it.
Limbaugh just proved he's a Nazi. Good for you, Rush! Imagine where you would be if you put forth as much effort towards a balanced diet as you do bashing your leader. You people need a hobby.
