Nation's mayors press Congress to act quickly on stimulus

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/POLITICS/02/04/mayors.economy/art.diaz.gi.jpg caption="Miami, Florida, Mayor Manny Diaz and other U.S. mayors are urging Congress to act fast on the stimulus plan."]
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Mayors from across the country descended on the nation's capital Wednesday with a clear message to Washington that their cities were in urgent need of an immediate economic stimulus.

Miami, Florida, Mayor Manny Diaz, president of the nonpartisan U.S. Conference of Mayors, led the delegation of mayors, whose first meeting of the day was with top White House senior advisers.

Later Wednesday, Diaz and other mayors are scheduled to attend meetings with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, and other key congressional leaders.

The U.S. Senate is debating a nearly $900 billion economic stimulus package backed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. Senate Republican leaders are pushing for a bill with more tax cuts and less spending. They also have said they want more emphasis on helping homeowners.

Los Angeles, California, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a Democrat, told reporters that "it's time to stop the bickering and start the tough negotiating to get this bill out to ensure that the American people in our cities get the relief that they need right now."

  1. Come again!

Thank you Mayors, you and governors know the plight that the American people are facing.....not those over privileged, rich out of touch Republican in congress like John McCain who are voting against the stimulus plan....just because it won't benefit them and their other rich friends! Wow Repulicans, you never cease to amaze me.....you really don't have anything good left to offer America!

Shoring up City budgets out of control isn't going to work to stimulate the overall economy.

It will keep the Mayors who haven't been able to budget their funds in office!

We the people are on to the PORK-and we want it cut out!

What's funny CNN, is you are posting only the few mayors from across the country that have been fiscally irresponsible. There are thousands of mayors who have stayed within their budget. Why not report on them? Instead, you're trying to fuel the flames of chaos and get the stim/entitlement package rammed through....I wish liberals could see the ramifications of their actions....idiots

Charlie Crist, a McCain supporter, was on Hardball yesterday begging the GOP to support the bill. The governors have to balance their budgets while the GOP'ers in the House and Senate play "who want to be an obstructionist."

@ TCM. who said "….I wish liberals could see the ramifications of their actions….idiots"

Well, we wish the GOP woud ADMIT to the ramifications of their actions, because we can ALL see them clear as day right now. Just open your eyes and look around you.

Seems everyone wants the stimulus bill passed except for those republicans who aren't effected by the economy downturn.

Hey, TCM, the only mayors who have been as you say "fiscally responsible" are those that are forced by local law to work under a budget that won't allow anything else....in that case they have cut education funding, medical coverage, police and firemen, and all those other "frivilous" things we don't really need. Hope you live in one of those towns.

And the piglets run to the teet. If I were a mayor I'd be lining up for a handout too. Sadly, entitlement programs and pay for play schemes are becoming the trademark of the once respectable Democrats.

lets think on this, bush and party ruined this country, got us in an illegal war
Since you won't man up and tell the entire story, I have to. If the iraqi war is illegal, then all who voted every year since the war started to continue to fund the illegal war To include dems
    1. Had no backbone
    2. Is just as guilty because they extended the illegal war!

What is this all of a sudden with Governor's and Mayors in the news about the Stimulus. All they are waiting for is a hand-out to fix their debt and make them electable again. If you want to help the economy do your job and find ways to tackle your state's problems. Stop relying on a handout and then not using it to the good of the people...... I have not seen any change on this term yet, just the same ole thing, just different name and face

Yes, we need a stimulus plan.
    No, I don't need a tax cut.
Yes, we need to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
No, I don't want to help people quit smoking.
No, I don't want to help people with their reproductive issues.
Yes, I think we should build, fix, repair our infrastructure needs.
Yes, I think we should build, fix schools.
Yes, we have to pay for unemployment, while staying focused on creating jobs.
    Yes, we need clean energy.
Yes, we need cars with better gas mileage and/or eco-friendly.
Bottom line the focus has to be on jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs if it doesn't create a job or help keep someone from losing their home it should wait. That should be the criteria on the stimulus pkg.
If we put people back to work, more people will have more money to spend on stimulating the economy. Tax-cuts did little in the first place and they won't help much now. Focus on jobs!

We are in such a terrible mess and this morning I heard the word depression and all anyone can do is complain and complain and fight and go on power trips I care for my family but the news and the fighting and the starting of an early campain are scary. I pray to God for him "not to forsake us." Just watch Fox News and it is so obvious that they are conservative and will do everything in their power to destroy Obama. They are full of fear and hate. Give the man a chance or personally go fill his shoes.

Have you noticed how everyone in this country, on both the individual and organizational levels, seems to have their hand stuck out, looking for freebies–like they are all entitled or something? What has this country turned into?

The GOP is clamoring for tax cuts for corporations because they knew Obama was going to limit executive compensation for companies that accepted bailout money. The GOP was able to get them the first $350B without oversight (you know "free market blah blah"), but the second is going to have strings attached. Soooo, they want to get them $350B+/- in tax cuts because that's basically money that would otherwise be the government's, but it stays in their pockets WITHOUT OVERSIGHT. We've already seen what these failing, greed-run corporations are doing with money that the gov't gives them...and yes, a tax cut is money the gov't is giving you. If you believe they're going to spend tax cuts responsibly, when they couldn't manage any responsibility with a handout, you are, quite literally, a FOOL.

This guy is really a piece of work. He wants to maintain the fear-mongering platform that was so successful for Bushy/Cheney/Rove for the past 8 years and to keep his followers up to date with new talking points – anything to try to make the Obama administration fail.

@ native texan: I am with you. The republicans have not put the spotlight on all the good things in the bill. They are deliberately trying to mislead the American people because they know some or most won't read or investigate for themselves. They have not changed, the repubs are up to their old tricks, people don't go for it. At least Obama has a plan.
