President Obama no stranger to Elkhart

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/02/09/art.boelkhart0209.gi.jpg caption="Then-Sen. Obama spoke with Sam and Dannielle Ericson while canvassing for votes in Elkhart, Indiana last May. Obama will return to the town as president on Monday."]
(CNN) - President Barack Obama's no stranger to Elkhart, Indiana, where he's holding a town hall meeting today to promote his plan to stimulate the economy.

Obama made a short stop in the northern Indiana city in early May, when he was battling Hillary Clinton for his party's presidential nomination. Clinton narrowly edged Obama in the primary, but she ended up dropping out of the race for the White House a month later.

Obama returned to Elkhart and held a rally in the northern Indiana city in early August, when he was fighting Republican Sen. John McCain for the presidency. Obama edged out McCain by 1 percentage point in the general election, becoming the first Democratic presidential candidate to win the state since 1964.

Elkhart's unemployment rate topped 15 percent in December, about triple what it was a year ago. The city's jobless rate is about double the national average - a number of the nation's top recreational vehicle makers are located in Elkhart, and hundreds of workers at those plants have lost their jobs.

Republicans fall in line, and Democrats fall in love. I love Barack Obama because he loves this country, AND AMERICANS.

Obama, your plan is a disaster.

We have spent almost 10 trillion since OCTOBER.

Thats enough to pay off about %90 of ALL MORTGAGES in AMERICA.

    THAT would be a stimulus.

Stop shoving MORE OF THE SAME down our throats.

Talk about Bush? OBAMA IS BUSH-PLUS.

    FRAUD...... NEXT.

We're so far down the financial drainpipe that no stimulus package is going to help much 'today.' After a few months? Maybe we'll see some improvement. It'll probably be closer to the end of the year before we see any change that lets us breathe a little easier and not worry so much about paying our bills.

Still, the very fact that President Obama is trying to do something, work with both democrats and republicans to get something done to help the everyday Americans out there - that speaks volumes. It's the polar opposite of everything that happened in the White House over the last 8 years.

We're not at a point where I can see anything working. It's the fact the president is trying to help and trying to do what's right that shows the good character of the man. The economy is also tied into the population's attitude. Right now, there's a lot of hopelessness being felt out there, and Obama is trying to restore some hope by trying to something, trying to get this country through this dark tunnel we're traveling through and out into the light once again. So what if the stimulus package doesn't work? No one can rebuild an economy in a week after a government had 8 years to tear it down. Obama's trying to help us. That hasn't happened in 8 years.

Roosevelt may or may not have helped end the Depression, but he tried to help the people survive it, get through it. I give him points for that. That may be all President Obama can do for us, but it's a lot. It's more than his predecessor could have or would have ever done for the citizens of the USA.

President Obama is asking the American people to let him take out a loan on our behalf and to use it to re-invest in America to jump start our nation.

Whether you agree with the particulars or not – I give him credit for being candid with us all.

The last sad excuse we had for a President – under the Republicans – blind-sided us, hood-winked us, and decieved us through incompetence and the persuit of an ideological unwarranted war that left us practically bankrupt and with an astounding national debt.

It comes down to who do you trust - and for sure, I can tell you who I will never trust again.

Let's see how many times he can say CATASTROPHE. Someone needs to tell this guy that you don't need to spend $820 billion (plus $35 billion in interest) to stimulate the economy. He needs to remember that he's spending OUR money. Some of us pay our taxes, not like Geithner, Daschle, and the rest.

    JJJJJJJJ Jive talkin maybe?

While you are on tonight Barry care to discuss the PAYBACK pork in the bill or is it just going to be fuzzy bunnies and fake rhetoric?

2 years of hope and change have been replaced by doom, gloom and DISASTER.

I challenge the media that SELECTED him to stop being the ones that PROTECTED him now.

REPORT what is in the bill, good and bad and let us decide?

Nah, that would be "fair and balanced" as we need to do something now, no matter if it is DUMB, didn't the nitwits Bush, Pelosi and Reid etc etc already do a TART bill that produced nothing?

What did Bush used to misspeak on, fool me once shame on.................

    One and done Barry.

Obama wants to eliminate the "golden parachute" for private industry. How about eliminating the "platinum parachute" for Congress?

Obama has got to be the dumbest president ever.

This bill was written by the democrats not him why is he pushing this crap. The only think I can see is that he is being told what to do and is just a stooge of the democrat party,.

What Obama needs to learn is that the people do not want this bill.

  20. Worried Democrat

Americans are saying NO TO THE STIMULUS BILL ......at least until you fix it and target the bill to focus on MORE JOBS and FIXING THE HOUSING CRISIS.

Congress should be ensuring that we get the most bang for our buck. In other words saying 30 new jobs are being created at the cost of $10 million dollars will NOT be acceptable. They should be focused on programs that will provide the maximum number of jobs per dollars spent.

The President and Congress need to remember this is OUR MONEY they are spending and it will be OUR DEBT, so we expect them to be smarter than they were with the first Bail Out fiasco.

Blah, Blah, Blah, if he did nothing some would have something to say, and trying to do something some have something to say. President Obama, do what you think is best for the country the same way the rest did and drove us into a ditch. Things are different than they were 20 and 10 years ago, so stop trying to use Ronald Reagan as a model. His trickle down economics stucked bless his soul, we need another direction which is from the bottom up and not from the top down!

Obama complains about petty bickering! Someone tell him that even thought won the election, it was for the President of a country with a two party system- not for a benevolent despot! His idea for a Hybrid is the Chicago/DC Politician. Just say NO to socialism!

All the bad mouths of President Obama must be Republicans who wants this nation to fail. People the man has only been in office for less than a month and I think he has moved forward and is trying to help the people. One thing for sure is that if you are not a believer of good will then you will always have something negative to say. Shut up and give the man a chance.
