(CNN) - Democratic leadership sources say they have worked out a way around the disagreement on the stimulus bill between the Senate and House over education funding.
Details on how they worked it out are not yet available, but a Democratic source says they have come up with an agreement now that everyone – House Democrats and moderate Senate Republicans – can live with.
Senators had slashed direct funding for school construction – a top priority for Democrats – and instead set aside money for governors to use on school modernization and rehabilitation. House Democrats did not believe that would ultimately be targeted enough to school districts in need.
This is good. Pelosi has already done enough damage - if she had derailed this agreement over $10B, then House Democrats would have to think long and hard about replacing her as Speaker.
The question here is how do we put some of this money into the rural schools of America? There's more to poverty than inner city slums, all you have to do is take a ride through most any state in America and look at the small towns and cities and they crumble. Their schools are in poor condition for sure!
@Chris
No worries, the snag from Pelosi was due to the fact she did not want a lump sum to go to the governor of the state to dispense.
She wants it to go thru Title 1 which is distributed to those schools in the worse shape, either urban or rural. If it had been left to the governors it would have been dispensed at the governor's discretion, which of course could be used to build charter schools in rich white neighborhoods, if you governor is Perry down here in Texas.
All they had to do was take back the $10 billion they bought Senator Specter with and that would have solved the problem. Why do we have to pay this republican senator to agree to the bill? Oh yeah, because he and two other republicans are the only republicans who signed on to support it. Did we have to payoff all three of them?
Is PUMA still around?
I am grateful that the Stimulus Bill includes money for the rebuilding and investing in our Nation's schools. Our children's educations are crucial IF we want to remain a World power. An uneducated populace, will create a third world country out of the U.S.A. quickly!
Again, I am thankful for the Republicans who had the courage to cross party lines and dogma to ........VOTE FOR AMERICA!
The taxpayer cut out again.
Its a big job ahead – I think that folks where they live should communicate loudly what needs to be worked with facts to back it up on in their communities and states – to your local representatives and Govenors – sign petitions –
I know that they have probably identified sites where infrastructure is failing – but if this ball gets rolling and the jobs and communities come back alive – we need to stay on course and invest in the future of our children and the infrastuctures of our communities – this should be the prioties of any nation not just ours.
----This is the worst day in the history of our nation--------
Capitalism and Freedom and Your Job and Family just took a major "hit" ,
Hey b.o. , you Dims need that 33 dollars a month more than I do ! So keep it !
How about Catholic schools? Why is it that the funds support Catholic colleges but not Catholic grade schools?
Alright, let's re-build this country! I'm fired up!!!!
Give me a break!
Obama is an arrogant obfuscaitng guy with zero experience or wisdom! 🙁
And the the Pelosi package is a partisan package of pet projects!
So there is no logical stimulus package! 🙂
I wonder if the socialists could have lived with something like this,,,,,,,,Refund all legal taxpayers (that is people that paid taxes only, not every man, woman, and child in america) a $1 million dollar check. That would cost the government what…..$156 million or so. A lot less than $1.5 trillion and our grandkids and great grandkids, etc., you get the idea, would not be stuck with the bill.
Mortgages would be paid, new cars would be bought, debts would be paid, other goods and services would be purchased……economic crisis over
Yay, everyone is happy!
Hey, where was that money coming from again? As far as I know, the U.S. doesn't have $700 Billion laying around.
Anybody curious....or worried?
Well, we already know what schools need the money. I just hope the govonors do the right thing. But people with that much money at their fingertips rarely do the right thing.
As long as they took out the overt religious discrimination in renting school space in order to qualify for the help, I agree that schools is a much better resource for our tax dollars as opposed to buying new cars for senators, studying STD's, building frisbee golf courses, etc.
republicans do not want to fund education because they know that only stupid people believe their ideology and if there are too many educated people their party would be a footnote in history.
The Waco newspaper just announced that the Crawford Independent School District is going to have to close a campus. Schools are suffering all over.
