Obama says 'lace 'em up' for service

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Obama - fresh off a political win in Washington after Congress passed his economic stimulus bill - will take his game to another set of constituents: basketball fans.

On Sunday, a pre-taped message from the president in which he promotes community service will air during the NBA All-Stars game in Phoenix, Arizona. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. EST and will air on TNT.

TNT is owned by CNN's parent company Turner Broadcasting System.

"In this time of so much need in our communities and across our country, we are blessed with endless ways to restore hope and opportunity in places that yearn for both," Obama will say according to excerpts released by the White House Saturday.

Obama's plea: "Prepare a care package for a soldier. Read to a child. Or fix up a local basketball court so the next generation can play and grow. ... Log on to USAService.org to find or create a project near you, then gather some friends and lace 'em up."

    All you do gooder's jumping on the save the world and help everyone band wagon now just because of a President being elected ask yourself a question.

    Where were you before now? there are lots of us out here that have been doing this every day of our live to make our world and community a better place and nobody had to ask us,it was just the right thing to do and how we were brought up.

    If somebody has to tell you or get you motivated with a speech to act,you don't understand the concept of servitude to your fellow man. It's a way of life,not a political,financial or social status thing.

    "The Last Patriot"- either you can be a voice in directing this country, or a constant obstacle to be overcome. For, it is quite clear that you look for the negative in everything. I wonder out loud if your current perspective to politics is how you approached the last eight years. Doubtful.

    We need jobs not more basketballs. When you needed more votes, we got more votes, but you are not helping us in return. Volunteering is not a Job, a job is when you get paid for your service.

    It is nice to finally have a President that cares about the average American citizen.

    President Obama's fundamental outlook is the world is one big community and we all need to help one another in some small way.

    Of course, the bible beaters and rednecks repubs will ridicule his attempt to help as just being a "community orgainizer"!

    I think that this helps to explain what our Presdient is hoping for by urging Americans to get involved in their own communities:

This is the stuff that made America the country it is today. It is only by doing what made us great that we will continue to enjoy what is referred to as the "American Dream."     Obama is so cool.

    He will leave a proud legacy on the next generation. I feel like reading to a group of kids myself.

    But I would like to see him promote reading to adults.

    The republicans are behaving like a kid that will take his ball away because he is not on the team.I find it very strange that they are making all kinds of rucuss about President Obama's stimulus package though they had time to review it.When the then President Bush n the republicans were squanderingtax payers money n not knowing where it went,I did not hear any complaints from them.I guess the fact that they now has to work rather than partying kills them.If they had to pack up their desk n go home to their families n tell them they dont have a j ob then they would be more concern.The free ride is over

    So we're supposed to continue to help a destitute nation with a. time. b. Money, I thought the presidents job was to spend money accordingly to aid in the bettering of his nation. The allocation of funds is his primary goal right? Oh and soothsayer, savior and ultimately the salvation of a world whos tyrannical decision making groups g-7,rnc, dnc, bilderberg, Rothschilds, world banking committee. How many people will pull the strings of our so-called, leaders? When will we realize we are doing nothing, oh save for some excessive spending to, stimulate a doomed economy. Do something for your community and stand up for it, dont let washington tell you how to recover a world they dont anticipate being there. Your cleaning the floors before the flood. No sense in that. Or is there? Help a little girl read? That will better our world? Only to be told to stay away from a child you dont know. But..but.. I was just doing what Obama told me to do. For all we know your a sex offender with dubious plans indeed. I hope this doesnt get censored. Though I have faith it WILL.

    This from a man who has never volunteered in his life. What was his chartiable giving???? less than a $1000 from a guy who is a millionaire.

    Give me a break. most Americans do far more in a month than this man has done in his lifetime. I agree with his call, but I think it is ironic it comes from this self serving man who is now our president.

    I think many Americans are suffering from stress and depression-thank goodness Obama understands the need to be "present" and to take the lead. HIs upbeat enthusiam and can-do spirit is medicine which is sorely needed.

    I hope people will volunteer in some of the areas I saw in Kentucky last night on ABC 20/20 with Diane Sawyer. Extreme poverty, drug addiction, uneducated people living on welfare. A RED Republican State (Third World Living Conditions). It sure looks like people they sent to Washington to represent them don't think they need any help.

    There is a difference in good debt and bad debt. Bad debt....spending billions of dollars for the war in Iraq. Good debt...spending billions of dollars in an effort to save our country. What was crazy was no regulation of Wall Street and spending billions of dollars in Iraq on a war of choice.

    Good thing previous generations of Americans didn't have the same attitude as you do today with regards to having to sacrifice for this nation.

    Also, the "food banks" are either OUT of food or running dangerously low all over our nation..if your one of the blessed ones, then how about donating food to those who arent, and while your at it, how about delivering some of that food yourself and see the needs in person..the other day in a Walmarts, a man saw a young single mom with kids almost faint when she saw her grocercy bill hit $139., the man stepped up and PAID it for her..what good deeds have "you" done to help a neighbor, brother ( or sister) or anyone ? I and the man in Walmarts cant do it all alone, neither can president Obama, sooo, instead of whining, etc, step up to the plate, help someone yourself..really, its a great feeling when you do !

    Why is it rich Democrats are so into giving away other people's tax money and not their own? If every rich Democrat were sincere we wouldn't have poverty in the US. If every rich Democrat stopped poluting the earth and gave up their cars and planes we wouldn't have "global warming". Hell, Al Gore preaches global warming but his home uses 10x the energy of an average home and I'm not going to even mention his jet or jets... Common sense, consistency, and Democrats just don't mix.
