Clinton departs to Asia for first overseas trip as secretary of state

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/POLITICS/02/15/us.clinton.asia.trip/art.clinton.gi.jpg caption="Hillary Clinton seeks improved relations with China, where she said the U.S. would renew military contacts."] ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska  (CNN) - Hillary Clinton says her first overseas trip to Asia as secretary of state is aimed at creating a "network of partners" to tackle problems that no nation can deal with alone, including the global economic crisis.

En route to Asia on Sunday, Clinton told reporters that the economy would serve as the backdrop of her trip, and she intends to explain steps the United States is taking with its $787 billion stimulus bill. She said she will be "seeking cooperation on ways that we are going to work through these very difficult economic times."

Clinton is slated to travel to Japan, China, South Korea and Indonesia to discuss a range of issues, including mutual economic recovery, trade, the prevention of nuclear weapons proliferation and reversing the global warming trend.

The trip represents a departure from a diplomatic tradition under which the first overseas trip by the secretary of state in a new administration is to Europe.

Speaking at the New York-based Asia Society last week, Clinton said the Obama administration wants to "develop a broader and deeper" relationship with Asia, a region that has felt overlooked by the United States despite its growing global importance.

"It demonstrates clearly that our new administration wants to focus a lot of time and energy in working with Asian partners and all the nations in the Pacific region," she said, "because we know that so much of our future depends upon our relationships there."

She better get on her knees and beg china not to recall our debt. As of the "stimulus" we owe China, a communist nation who hates us, 1.8 trillion dollars. Does this make sense to anyone?

If they do recall, our economy is done. All of those balances on your monthly statements, gone. Your job, gone. Your house, gone. The word derpression would not explain the issues we would be dealing with.

    Hi Hillary-

We would, at any cost, like to see some of the Asian nations behave properly. How about wielding some of your diplomatic sticks with a dose of savoire faire? N. Korea has a tendency to act like a smart alec in a herky jerky fashion. Let's atleast bring it to the negotiating table and we are positive it will be a cake walk for you.

I am so fed up with all of this political garbage!! John McCain? Are you really that screwed up? His FELLOW REPUBLICANS!! Just as screwed up!! In reading & watching TV, I have YET to hear one, so called, EXPERT, say they have the answer to all of our problems! Our President is TRYING!! I have no doubts that the republicans are going to church, PRAYING, that this stimulus package fails totally!!
WHY? Not because they are interested in the American people or this country. If President Obama's plans do work then it will be the end of the republican party and they deserve it.

I do think this was her calling. Hillary might have been a good president, but believe she really could end up being one of the best Secretaries of State we have had, in a time when this postions couldn't be more important.

So Hillary is going to Asia. Iran wants to talk. And other countries have already said they will do the same, wishing President Obama good luck and seeing a CHANGE in how America does business.
It is NO surprise to me. President Obama has, in this short time, done more to try and get this country back on track than the disgusting and terrorizing tactics of the republicans.

FOR WHAT? Obama stripped her of her authority and responsibilities, virtually leaving her a paper lion...why? Because the Clintons know the scoop on him, as well as Gov Blag..

Considering the number of "special envoys" within the State Dept. ranks, it appeared Hillary only had to point, laugh and speak in ever expanding concentric circles in order to fulfill her new job requirements. Now add travel and covert acceptance of gifts to the lists.
