Abstinence 'is not realistic,' Palin's daughter says

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/02/17/artpalinjohnston.gi.jpg caption="Palin says she and Johnston still plan to wed."]

(CNN) – In her first interview since giving birth to son Tripp, Bristol Palin, daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, said it’s not “realistic” to expect abstinence outside of marriage.

Watch: Bristol Palin breaks her silence

“Everyone should be abstinent . . . but it’s not realistic at all,” the 18-year-old told Fox’s Greta Van Susteren, adding that having sex as a teenager had become “more and more accepted now” among people her age.

The new mother, who gave birth to Gov. Palin’s first grandchild late last year, said her decision to go forward with an unplanned pregnancy was entirely her own.

“It was my choice to have the baby,” she said, in an interview that aired Monday night. “It doesn’t matter what my mom’s views are on it. It was my decision and I wish people would realize that too.”

Bristol Palin said she would eventually like marry Levi Johnston, her newborn son’s father. But they’ve “been focusing though on just getting through school and getting an education and stuff – getting a career going,” Palin said.

Palin said she was “excited to be a mom” and described her 2-month-old son Tripp as “awesome” and “very, very, very cute,” but said that other teenagers should not follow in her footsteps.

“I think everyone should just wait 10 years,” Palin said. Being a teenage mother “is not glamorous at all . . . your whole priorities change after having a baby.”

It's not realistic to expect abstinence outside of marriage? Huh? She's as dumb as her mother.

Let's hope this boob gets her "education and stuff" and stays off the welfare dole, but it seems doubtful.

Having children before you are financially unable to provide for them is, as Obama noted during the campaign, a punishment for the parents and the child. This is epecially so in an isolated and difficult place like Alaska.

I'm astounded. Bristol Palin sounds like a sensible, realistic young woman. I wonder how she avoided being contaminated by her mother's irrational judgementalism?

She obviously is still a very naive 'KID'. Don't blame her, what a disaster it would have been to have such a 'Grandmother' as VP.

I'm happy Bristol is taking being a mother seriously. It looks like she has a good head on her shoulders... She's realized her mistake and is willing to live with it. Now if only her mother would listen to her and realize abstinence in NOT a efective way in controling teen pregnancy.

"Bristol Palin said she would eventually like marry Levi Johnston" Ok I laughed. Please don't tell me those were hel actual words. And she said they're gonna focus on their "careers". You have jobs honey, not careers. Actually, you don't have either

So she was allowed to make the "choice" to have the baby-yet her mother would legislate that no other woman would be able to have a choice...

Abstinence does not work. Talk to your kids about sex and support their request for some type of birth control.
Condoms are best because of its ability to also stop sexually transmitted disease.

Of course, George W. didn't support birth control for any reason, and apprently Palin wasn't paying attention to her daughter. As Americans what do we receive for not supporting birth control? Unwed mothers who need State and Federal help.

So there you go religious right ... you have helped to create the entitlements needed to take care of these babies.

I supported my daughter's decision for birth control at age 17. She had her first child at age 28 and can well afford to take care of him.

I challenge the religious right to become RESPONSIBLE parents, stop assuming that your teenager would never have sex! You are living in a fantasy land that will crash around you when your daughter or son comes home to tell you that you are about to become a grandparent.

Liberal, proud and progressive. That's why I support sex education in the school system. It sure beats abortion!

I saw this and thought it great for her to do, until her Mom had to get into the picture. I hope things work out for her with all she has taken on.

Good for her for speaking out. And she's absolutely right! Abstinence is a ridiculous expectation in today's world. I like this Palin better than I like her mom. Hang in there Bristol....it'll get better with time. Don't give up your dreams just because you have a baby....you may just have to live out those dreams in a different time line.

She sounds like a young lady who has learned from the experience. I hope that she continues to speak out on this issue, especially concerning the difficulties that she faces as a teen mother.

There is no excuse for being irresponsible, who is paying for this baby??? Mom & Dad??? Having a baby before having a means of supporting your family is irresponsible and juvenile!!!

It's sad, but it seems that Bristol may actually know a little more about our society than her own mother.

Maybe she should be the new face of the Republican party?

"Everyone should be abstinent...but it's not realistic at all..."says Bristol. Another inane statement from the Palins. But then, FOX news gave it to the airways. Well, let's hope Bristol and Levi can get that "education and stuff".

Well we ALL know "abstinence" was NOT on this girl's mind!!! AND to think she's giving "advice" on abstinence just proves how insane this whole family is. That's like a parent telling their child NOT to smoke or drink when they themselves are doing it right in FRONT of the child!!!

The entire Palin family is proving just how "trailer trash" they are with their constant denial and excuses covering their inability to TELL THE TRUTH!!

Sarah Palin HID her own pregnancy from her OWN CHILDREN and her family. Ummmm....is that the role model we are to aspire to here?

Now...her own daughter is exhibiting the same denial and delusional traits her own mother is seriously guilty of. So in a sense the "apple doesn't fall too far from the tree"......

And by the way she probably gave birth to Trig, too, but the Palins and the GOP are covering that up.

I can't help but wonder if it had been Obama's daugther who had been pregnant during the election...oh boy, oh boy, we would never have heard the end of it ( especially on fox news)... Anyhow, it's great that she focuses on her son and she should better warn her mother that a quick wedding come 2012 ( for the sake of evangical republicans ) is not on the cards
