Media critic blasts Chris Matthews' 'man crush' on Obama

Goldberg takes issue with media coverage of President Obama.

(CNN) - It has become one of MSNBC host Chris Matthew's most infamous lines of the 2008 presidential election:

"I felt this thrill going up my leg," Matthews said the night Obama resoundingly defeated rival Hillary Clinton in the Virginia and Maryland Democratic primaries.

And former CBS News Correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who has long alleged liberal bias in the media, highlighted that line as indicative of the media's "slobbering" press coverage of candidate Obama during his campaign for the White House.

"That's not commentary, that's a man-crush," Goldberg declared on CNN's Reliable Sources Sunday.

Goldberg, the author of the new book “A Slobbering Love Affair,” credits the media coverage of the 2008 presidential election for ultimately resulting in Barack Obama's victory.

He specifically faulted coverage of the prolonged Democratic primary campaign, during which two historic candidates contentiously squared off.

"I think in elite liberal circles, certainly inside the media, race trumps gender, and that's why they slobbered over Barack Obama, and took Hillary Clinton to the back room and beat her with a rubber hose,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg also faulted political journalists for not digging up controversial sermons of the president's longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, until Obama had already effectively captured his party's nomination.

"These tapes were available, you didn't have to be Woodward or Bernstein to dig them up," Goldberg said. "If those tapes had come out six months earlier, certainly a year earlier, I don't think Barack Obama would have been the nominee.

"I think Hillary Clinton would have been. And I think she would have been the president today," he continued. "And in that sense, she's the biggest loser in all of this."

Chris Matthews is NOT an anchor. Brian Williams is an anchor. I don't believe that he claims to be unbiased or objective, because he doesn't have to be. He's does an hour long discussion show, where they discuss news. But it's not a news show. So him, and Olbermann, and Hannity, and O'Reilly, or Maddow do not have to be objective. Why doesn't everyone understand that?

Not only do I think its true that the media decides who will and who won't be elected, I believe they get off on the perceived power this gives them. Everything we are fed by the media has an agenda. Every headline and every word is carefully chosen to move us in the direction they want. Reporter's go into a story with an angle and write only what supports their point of view and suppress what doesn't.

And the media consumers lap it up! We don't seek alternative points of view to at least try to see things from a different perspective before making up our minds. We repeat incorrect facts over and over like a mantra.

It seem the more access to information we have the less informed we are because we don't question the accuracy or the intentions of the information we are digesting.

I guess you could say the media is responsible for making the economy as bad as it is too. Scaring people into spending.

Usually the most vocal opponents secretly harbor what they claim to hate. Perhaps Mr. Goldberg has a "man crush" on Obama as well.

To Nina: Don't be an idiot. You talk about rigging the poles; look what ACORN did in this election. They paid people to vote – a fact. Some of them were too stupid to read the ballot and crossed out names, marked the ballot too many times and all sorts of things. They do have a right to vote, but to be told how to vote – that's rigging in its worst form.
By the way the Florida election scores were approved by a Democrat.

The media coverage of Dem primaries was shameful and disgraceful. The media prostitutes handed the race to Obama, stealing it from HRC. And the Dem party stood idly by, and clapped on.

quit whining about the media. lame. if people can't think for themselves and approach media with a suspicion that is critical, then they get what they deserve. I personally read all of Barack's policy positions before the media blitz and campaigned for him based on that.... you people are a bunch of babies.

People can say whatever they like Americans were free to vote for whoever they chose once they were in the voting booth. The media was not in there and we voted. Bill Ayers, Rev Wright, Michelle Obama's lack of love for the country, Reko,Obama socialism Joe the plumber and the circus, palling around with domestic terrorist, elistist, ran 24 7 . The media was in love with Obama I hate to turn on the tv if they start to hate him then. It could not have got anymore worst .. Goldberg needs to have a crush on someone man or woman. Get a life. McCain lost get over it.

The man crush thing was sickening., Olbermann is sickening too. The media continues to slobber all over Obama and he hasnt been in office a month yet. Many of us have stopped watching MSNBC because they are so biased in favor of Obama and they trashed everyone else. Thats not responsible journalism folks.

Can anyone tell me why Chis Matthews has a job? He strikes me as more of that annoying person sitting next to you on a long, long airline flight. than a journalist.

Goldberg you are right wing racist, of all the qualities of Obama that you have pointed out you chose the color of his skin to to be the dominant epithet of his candidacy. You are saying the other qualities wasn't why the liberal media wanted him. What about the black candidate who ran previously they were black too, why didn't the liberal media do the same for them? You are a right wing, racist out of touch old man. Hope you don't make a dollar on that book. Find yourself a job.

YEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!! This is not news. There are a number of us who said this throughout the campaign but no one bothered to listen. This kind of sensational "journalism" is exactly why I no longer watch MSNBC, Matthews or Olberman. They are basicly the same as O'Reily on Fox, just the left side of the coin. They disgust me and I am as liberal as they come, I just happen to also care about journalistic integrity.

The media "elected" Obama. Give me a break. The American people were tired of the same old politics; same old cast of characters. The people elected Obama, and Greenberg and those who harbor his feelings simply have to get over it.

Goldberg's an idiot. Anyone that isn't or wasn't moved to some degree w/ the historical importance of this election is either a racist or needs to be euthanized! Conservatives are quick to lable media that they do not agree with as "liberal bias" w/out recognizing that there is a such thing as "conservative bias" in the media as well! Media or not we are all humans and there will always be some bias regardless of how apparent it is.

It's funny that people think there's a liberal bias. Here are the facts: more people watch Fox News and it's commentators. Those commentators blasted Obama any chance they got. Even with Fox's incredibly unfair critical coverage of Obama reaching more people than other cable news networks, Barack Obama still won. The liberal bias (which does not exist) did not help Barack Obama, he helped himself by appealing to all people

"Liberal media"??? I arrived in the United States in late in 2002 and was horrified by the blind, unquestioning obedience of the entire US media to the war moungering Bush regime. While anybody reading international media were given balanced coverage, the US public were railroaded by nothing less than Cold-war era-style propaganda. Where was this mystical liberal media then? Oh, that's right, unemployed if they were silly enough to put their principles before their paycheck. If any have helped get Barak elected now, it's the least they can do to make up for their disgraceful pandering to the right 6 years ago and the disaster that it led to.
