Media critic blasts Chris Matthews' 'man crush' on Obama

Goldberg takes issue with media coverage of President Obama.

(CNN) - It has become one of MSNBC host Chris Matthew's most infamous lines of the 2008 presidential election:

"I felt this thrill going up my leg," Matthews said the night Obama resoundingly defeated rival Hillary Clinton in the Virginia and Maryland Democratic primaries.

And former CBS News Correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who has long alleged liberal bias in the media, highlighted that line as indicative of the media's "slobbering" press coverage of candidate Obama during his campaign for the White House.

"That's not commentary, that's a man-crush," Goldberg declared on CNN's Reliable Sources Sunday.

Goldberg, the author of the new book “A Slobbering Love Affair,” credits the media coverage of the 2008 presidential election for ultimately resulting in Barack Obama's victory.

He specifically faulted coverage of the prolonged Democratic primary campaign, during which two historic candidates contentiously squared off.

"I think in elite liberal circles, certainly inside the media, race trumps gender, and that's why they slobbered over Barack Obama, and took Hillary Clinton to the back room and beat her with a rubber hose,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg also faulted political journalists for not digging up controversial sermons of the president's longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, until Obama had already effectively captured his party's nomination.

"These tapes were available, you didn't have to be Woodward or Bernstein to dig them up," Goldberg said. "If those tapes had come out six months earlier, certainly a year earlier, I don't think Barack Obama would have been the nominee.

"I think Hillary Clinton would have been. And I think she would have been the president today," he continued. "And in that sense, she's the biggest loser in all of this."

MSNBC's Matthews, Olberman and Maddow are unashamedly biased toward the liberal side. Their love of liberal candidates
seems idolic while treatment of anything conservative is vitriolic.
I don't see how it can be legal to let them prostitete for the DNC.
I think they have a sexual misorientation!

Can I stand in line for the back room and take my turn at the rubber hose
beating of Hillary. Goldberg is in the tank for Hillary.

Anyway the best man won and now sits in the White House.

By saying that the media got a President elected, you're really insulting the intelligence of the voting populace. Yes, many people are easily influenced by the media, but that is no one's fault but those individuals who can't think for themselves.

Let's not forget the media was in love with Ronald Reagan too...how quickly we forget, GOP. I thought elephants never forget? 🙂

No matter who wins in any election, the opposition is going to scream and cry foul and find some excuse other than their own ineptitude.

Honestly, if you Repubs believe that McCain and Palin were the BEST you had to offer, then you deserved to lose the election. I'm as Liberal as they come, but even I can pinpoint better candidates than a washed up sociopathic senator and a never-was who thinks living close to another country gives her foreign policy experience. Unfortunately, the only good candidates from Team Red were against the Iraq War and there's no way the GOP would have allowed a representative from their camp to admit the war was a mistake.

As for Hillary, the reason why the media didn't slobber over her is because she's a has-been also. We had her for 8 years already...the media is done with her. You know how fickle the media is...everything always has to be fresh. Hillary isn't fresh...she's an old dog with no new tricks.

But seriously, what's done is done. Obama is President, so deal with it. At least Obama wasn't appointed by the Supreme Court...he actually WON the election.

news when its coming from him. Sickening.

What a jerk...... Doesn't he get it yet? No wonder CBS doesn't even make it onto the ratings charts anymore with this kind of pathetic whinning going on by their news people. President Obama is OUR president because the American public seen in him a sincerity and willingness to try and change politics as it had become under the Republicans. Of all the news mouths that yammer about the political situation from day to day, I dare say Chris Matthews is the one to be least impressed by the new kid on the block of politics. So IF Chris Matthews got excited by Barack Obama's run for the roses, one must believe President Obama excited millions more then Chris Matthews. Bottom line is, you newsless media, WE THE PEOPLE LOVE PRESIDENT OBAMA and all your whinning otherwise only makes you look petty and a bunch of big baby's. Grow up and report the news as it happens, not as you WANT it to be...

HE hit the nail on the head. The media got Obama elected,
Hillary should be our President. I voted for Obama, because I would
not vote for McCain. I even thought of not voting al all, but was
    afraid McCain would win.

I do not understand people who were NOT moved by Obama's speeches and historic wins! Democratic, Republican, or Indendent, if you can't appreciate the powerful emotions and excitement for politics that Obama stirred in people, there is something missing from your soul. You should seriously examine why you are so pessimistic.

...or maybe a few new ideas and a brighter way of managing the country are overdue! Who would not go gaga after the leadership we have had to endure the past 30+years. Maybe it is time for the old worn out politicians and Goldberg to either get a few new ideas or move on out to the pasture.

So what is the problem with Matthews expressing his excitement? His comment is being so twisted and distorted, pulled out of context, I just have to think that a true sickness runs rampant among his detractors.

Silly, ephemeral, ultimately meaningless marketing, journo, and PR-speak like "man crush" is suddenly applied to a statement to mean WHAT?

And don't tell me that Fox and O'Reilly and the rest of that group of thugs don't have their "man crushes" on Cheney, Bush, Rove et al.

This is all just about "sour grapes" and some sad, mentally corrupted folks need to go back and read their Aesop fables to remind themselves of the slobbering fox who didn't get his way.

Goldberg has once again proven what an idiot he is. Never heard much about the right wing gutless press when the Bush-Cheney thugs were in the White House. These juveniles need to get a life and contribute to society rather than continue to drag society down into their mire.

Let set the record straight. A majority of voting America had a "man crush" on Obama....white, black, latino, indian, woman, men, gay, straight, disabled, old & young. A significant amount of people had a man crush on him and still do, and that's why he won the election. People who have a problem with Obama's election need to get over it. Just like many people had to suffer thru Bush for 8 years, they will have to endure Obama for hopefully 8 years. Though I believe at the end of the day, there would be no sufferring like Bush with Obama. The world has a "man crush" on Obama, and the haters cannot accept that fact, but the faster they do, the better off they will be.

What absurd rubbish from Bernard Goldberg. "Man-crush"? Is it anything like the "man-crush" Sean Hannity had everytime Sarah Palin stopped by, and he fawned over her like a 14-year-old boy worshipping a 15-year-old cheerleader? More hypocrisy and double-standards, at a time when most of us are just tired of it all.

Another purveyor of the Media bias conspiracy theory. I am sure the radical right will eat up this book. I mean it covers one of the republican boogiemen, the media. Ann colter, goldberg and Corsi are laughing themselves to the bank.

Maybe Goldberg might want to think before he sets of another killer like Jim D adkisson. Adkisson, a devoted Goldberg follower, felt he should attack the liberals that Goldberg hated. But he chose the members of this church because he couldn't get to Goldberg's 100.

Perhaps the "Media" like the rest of the country were just sick and Tired of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales, Wolfowitz , Hastert, Obey, Cunningham, Foley, the Repugnate Party, Katrina, lies, death, wire tapping, incompetence, refusing to acknowledge of the and ultimately tanking of the ecomony, unaccounted for TARP money
    and loss of credibility era....

Where was Goldberg's book and critics of the media, when bush\cheney had 90% approval rating after .9/11??????

Note: I don't work for, have stock in (directly or indirectly) or know of anyone in the media....

Independent American pissed off at the Republican Party

I tried watching Chris Mathews but it appear he slobbers or spits while talking, which is very disgusting to me. He has the nasty habit of talking over people if the answer to a question isn't what he likes. I don't know why msnbc keeps him, must be a following of some kind. For Chris to make that statemnet about a shiver going done his leg was weird and not very professional.

Did the press have a slobbering love affair with Obama, that's pretty much fact so what's the big deal. I suppose the big deal is the press pretty much became just another silly show rather than a "news" program. The bias in almost all the major networks is very apparent.
