McCain 2.0: Senator on Twitter, with a new BlackBerry to boot

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/01/21/art.mccain.gi.jpg caption="McCain got a new BlackBerry device in January."]WASHINGTON (CNN) - John McCain said during the presidential campaign that he "never felt the particular need to e-mail," but he has apparently developed an urge to Twitter.

McCain recently began sending tweets to the more than 88,000 Twitter users following him online, offering brief updates on floor votes, media appearances and his hometown Phoenix Suns.

"steve nash hurt? amare too! what now for the suns!," he wrote about the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday.

Senators have been slower than their House colleagues to embrace the micro-blogging technology, but several members of the upper chamber - notably Missouri's Claire McCaskill and Iowa's Charles Grassley - have been among the most prolific twitterers on Capitol Hill.

While other senators appear on Twitter, many of them (or their staffers) simply use the site to send out formal-looking messages and press releases. But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan told CNN the Arizona Republican is sending out his own authentic tweets.

According to his Twitter page, the senator is following updates from a handful of journalists who covered his campaign, as well as from a few members of his South Carolina campaign staff.

Buchanan also revealed that McCain is now wielding a brand new BlackBerry, which he picked up in January. That marks a great leap forward for the senator, who spent the campaign attached to his Motorola Razr phone, but never used a PDA.

Throughout the campaign, McCain suffered from the perception that he didn't quite understand the Internet, an assessment that proved damaging in a race against a young, tech-savvy opponent. In an interview with the New York Times last July, McCain said he knew how to use a BlackBerry, but that he didn't have his own.

"I use the BlackBerry, but I don't e-mail, I've never felt the particular need to e-mail," he told the paper.

While we can all admire NcCain's refusal to accept early release from POW camp, let's remember that it was a decision that was largely made FOR him not solely BY him. Given the military history of his family it would have been anthema for him to have accepted such an offer. It would have marked the end of his military career and a polical one that would never have started.

It never ceases to amaze me just how intolerant, vicious, and ignorant some of these posters are. It isn't really news that John McCain has a BlackBerry and a Twitter, even though it's kind of ironic given that the media attempted to portray him as some sort of Luddite during the campaign, however, what the first 30 or so posters said here is absolutely disgusting. You claim to stand for "tolerance" and "fairness" and "equality" and you spout the most shameful, disrespectful, and ignorant garbage I've ever seen.

How is it that most liberals in this country have come to exemplify the very things that they criticize?

My my my. A man devotes his entire human life, the only one he has, to defend and serve a country he dearly loves, and all a young, lazy, pathetic, in-love-with-theirselves, generation of yuppies can do is spew hollow, thoughtless hate. That's because they don't know what it is to sacrifice. They don't know what it is to lay down their life for fellow man. They relax in the wake of freedom and prosperity that an entire generation gave all to get. You don't love your country when you spew such hate for a man that has given all. You're in love with yourself, full of pride & hate. "A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit." Proverbs 29:23, KJV
You could live 100 life's and John McCain would still have more honour than you. Keep bowing down to the "messiah" and is hollow promises and socialist ideas. Keep hating your neighbor and fellow man. America will surely prosper with people like you.........

Too bad he didn't have it the other night during the President's speech. He could have been twittering away instead of looking bored and disinterested in that "I got my rear kicked by that guy" way. Of course when it came out what the other high tech rocket scientists in the Republican party were sending he probably did himself a service.

From his speech the other day:

OBAMA: I'm proud that we passed a recovery plan free of earmarks.

WHAT? Which recovery plan is he talking about? Does he know what an "earmark" is? Don't lie, man, just come out and say it. You're popular and famous right now, no one will care. Just say, "We passed a huge spending bill with a number of earmarks". At least I would respect your honesty.

McCain honorable? The old McCain might have been. There is no doubt he was very brave in his time in prison camp. Probably braver than any of us. I used to respect John. I didn't always agree with him, but I respected him. In this last election he listened too much to his advisors. He became spiteful, vindictive, and lied repeatedly about his opponent, with attempts of character assassination. Even he realized, too late, that he'd gone too far. The McCain of the 21St Century is a hateful old man who has lost his way. No technology in the world will change that. Enjoy your Blackberry, Mr. McCain. If you have problems with it, there are Elderhostel classes to teach you how to use it. Usually last a week or two.

Getting shot down and spending time as a POW didn't accomplish much ... did it SGTBIGO? He wasn't serving MY interests ... and he wasn't much of a pilot either.

    @ beverly
"He is still a disrespectful, dishonorable, and bitter old man who needs to retire. No technology can change that."

Your remarks about someone you do not even know is disrespectful. When was the last time you were a POW serving your company? Have you ever held an elected public office? You should go tell your parents that they are disrespectful, old, and bitter.

"TRUTH" – Funny, perfect though as I have learned that the right likes the word "truth." It doesn't mean "fact, " its a representation of an individuals ideas. Forbes magazine, eh? Most technologically savvy? Did you read the above article?

"I've never felt the particular need for e-mail."

Four year-olds know how to e-mail.

Your "truth" is yet another lie you hope no one looks up.

Beyond that, this hero POW did, in fact, give away vital military information for better conditions. They knew he was a comanding officer's son, so he was treated accordingly.

Sorry, these "facts" always seem to get in the way of your "truth."

I thought Methusala could not use email because he had war wounds that would not allow his fingers to use the keyboard.

However, today we learn he can use a Blackberry, which not only has smaller keys but they are closer together.

Suddenly, his manual dexterity is ok?

Just another lie we have caught the repubs peddling during the election.
