Democrats voice concerns on Obama's Iraq drawdown plan

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/POLITICS/02/27/iraq.dems/art.pelosi.gi.jpg caption="House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has questioned the need to keep 50,000 troops in Iraq until 2011."]
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Top Democrats have expressed concerned over President Obama's plan to draw down nearly two-thirds of U.S. forces in Iraq by August 2010, while some key Republicans are offering praise.

At issue: Obama plans to leave between 35,000 to 50,000 residual forces in the war-torn country, serving in a training or advisory role to the Iraqi military.

All U.S. troops have to be out of Iraq by December 31, 2011, under an agreement the Bush administration signed with the Iraqi government last year. There are currently 142,000 U.S. troops in Iraq.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, recently cited concern that the residual force Obama is planning to leave in Iraq is too large.

This should be no surprise, remember Obama was the "only one" that voted against the Iraq war. Putting that fact aside, another fact is that Iraq had already given the U.S. a timetable to remove troops during former Pres. Bush's era. Pelosi is simply putting an unnecessary spin on something which has already taken place. I like Pelosi, but President Obama said, the Generals on the ground are his advisors and Pelosi is not one of them.

Obama is finally acting as commander in chief. Once he gets this resolved he can return to fairness-bringer in chief and statist-economist in chief. You know, the stuff that he actually cares about.

One step at a time. If situation improves, then withdraw more.

Similarly, for stimulus package, a lot of money has been allocated. Let it works first and show some results before asking for more.

Mr President, resources are scares, Use wisely and it is always good to be more conservatives. Taking some risks is necessary but be cautions of the impact and leave some allowances for adjustments.

  4. STOP GOLDEN PARACHUTES

The President said he would get our troops out responsibly, I feel leaving only 50,000 is responsible since there are over 142,000. I hope they are all out by 2011. @ Al-Calif, I couldn't agree with you more. Pelosi you need to put yourself in your place and stop undermining the President's decision, your starting to act REPUGGY. His decision is his and the advisors decision and we as Americans have to accept it or comit TREASON AGAINST HIM AND USA.

  5. OBAMA SUPPORTER

    I voted for Obama because

    1) he said he will pull our troops out of Iraq within 6 months in the office – now he says 19 months and the remaining 50K will leave in Dec 2011 – This is 3 YEARS NO 6 MONTHS

    2) He said he will be truthful to us – seems like now he is changing his mind

    3) He will not bow to GOP pressure and continue with POLITIC AS USUAL – SO far seems like his Iraq policy will be politic as usual.

U WILL NOT GET MY VOTE AGAIN MR OBAMA

While I appreciate the independent thinking of Democrats, President Obama always said he would listen to the commanders on the ground when settings goals on a responsible withdrawal from Iraq.

I agree with this comments! This is a smart move. We don't know what the commanders told the President.

Pelosi is a bafoon. She thinks that she is the ONE. No BHusseinO is the precious ONE.

As a small business owner that had to lay off some people, I decided to walk the employee parking lot to see who had Obama bumper stickers on their cars. Those are the people that were laid off. They wanted change, they got it. Change you can believe in.

I really hope the people you laid off for not agreeing with your policitical stance sue you to the very depths of hell. Now that's a real Republican thug for you, the rest of your sick twisted party must be so proud of you!

Apparently they don't remember what happened when the troops were pulled out of Viet Nam. Maybe they should be shown news photos of ANV tanks rolling down Main St. Saigon as a refresher or read a history book if they weren't born yet. I know Senator Schumer should know better.

  12. Is it 2013 yet?

Gary gpp, when you run a successful business, get elected Mayor, get elected Governor and are asked to be the VP of this once great Country, then you can throw around insults like "idiot" at people that are SUPERIOR to you in every way.

Put down the etch a sketch the big people are talking and your mommy is making your favorite, Spaghettios.

I despise Obama, but I agree totally with this move, but I do find it funny that many of you who hammered Bush for the surge that Obama was against and was wrong about, are now saying how great an idea this is.

You are a bunch of hypocrites.

Is Code pink and Cindy Sheehan and Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews going to loot and pillage because of this obvious broken promise by the messiah or are they all going to get a funny feeling up their legs?

Man and the Dems call the Reps a bunch of grumpy old white people.
    Look at Pelosi an Reid.
I forgot Nancy has such an extensive military background that her opinion actually means something. Oh that's right... she doesn't have a clue!

Hey Nancy, pull the stick out. You might feel better.

  15. Bring em home

Glad that "most" of the troops will be coming home. Whether you want to admit it or not, we will always have a military presence in Iraq and Afganistan. We can never completely pull out of the region and now that we have brought "Democracy" to the citizens of Iraq they will always be a ward of the U.S. I just hope they use thier Democracy better than we do. Maybe they can implement a political system that actually works for the people and not corporations and politicians. Oh- and Nancy Pelosi will ruin all of the momentum that Obama and the Democrats have gained from the past election in a few short months. Dems and Repubs both are growing to despise this woman. At least they can agree on something.

The far lefties are seeing a moderate President they didn't expect with their record settling campaign fund-raising.

Even though I was wary of Obama at first, and a bit miffed knowing he defeated SOS Clinton largely on foreign policy in the primaries and then APPOINTED her #1 foreign diplomat...I am rather amused that he is making a lot of left radicals uncomfortable.

I rather like the way his foreign policy and social domestic policy is unfolding.

After the way the LEFT scorned and disrespected Hillary, there is sweet justice in all of this. Of course, the senator from NEW YORK CITY is going to have to support Bushs' National Defense strategy in the aftermath of 911. She couldn't afford to be wrong!

Beware President O, these fools will rise in '12 with a challenger...probably Franken, or Soros or some other freak of nature!

As an Italian American, I am so happy with the election of Mr. Obama.

George Bush made Pelosi seem like an old crazy woman. I am just so happy for her now

Just because she's italians she claims Catholic, but Catholics don't claim her supporting abortion and gay marriage she should start her own religion that believes in everything she does like worshiping her. Call it Pelosism, I bet she would have a big following in San Francisco.

As much as I like Pelosi, Obama did state during his campaign he would RESPONSIBLY end the war in Iraq. I think it's ok to keep 35,000 – 50,000 troops in Iraq for a short time. It's alot better than 142,000 troops.

Nancy should be voted out of office. She's almost as abrasive as Hillary. Her position has way too much power and who the heck does she think she is, the President? Let President Obama make the decisions, that's what we hired him for. Let this far left liberal Pelosi go by the wayside.
