In her first post-White House interview, the former first lady told ABC News that she and former President George W. Bush were enjoying coffee together every morning, holding dinner parties with friends, and dealing with the hunt for furniture. “Life is great,” she said.
"We have very little furniture. We don't have a kitchen table or a dining room table," said Bush. "Friends loaned me a kitchen table, and the other night I had 16 people for dinner, and I had to borrow chairs from the Secret Service next door.”
Laura Bush says her husband is meeting the neighbors, making trips to the hardware store, and catching up on some reading via a Kindle. His latest read is a novel given to him for Christmas by former Vice President Dick Cheney.
And while Laura Bush lived and breathed politics for the last eight years, the former first lady said she did not watch President Obama's first address to Congress because she simply forgot.
"I thought it was so ironic that for eight years I would be a nervous wreck before the State of the Union, and for days before, as George would be preparing his speech, worried about it and thinking about what was going to be in the speech," Bush said. “And this time it came and went and I didn't even think about it."
The first lady, an ardent champion of Afghan women's rights while in the White House, also said she was worried that people “will wash their hands of Afghanistan, and I think it'd be a terrible mistake."
Laura yes-George NO. I hope I never hear of another Bush.Oh by the way- I used to be a Republican until 2008.
Laura said George is catching up on his reading. Was there a sequel to "The Pet Goat"?
Hey Laura,
Now that you and your idiot husband have a lot of free time are you planning a vacation to Iraq anytime soon ? I would assume not.
President Bush did not leave a mess.... You can thank the dems for it.....And they are destroying our country now. I think Obama is smarter than his followers... and he knows it...........Laura Bush was a great First Lady.......Our best ever.........Did you know that the Dems have spent more money since Obama has been in office than Bush did the whole 8 years he was in........Thank you President Bush and Laura for bringing the best to the white house after the Clintons sh.......all over it.............
If you IDIOTS knew anything about this train to Vegas you keep blathering and complaining about you'd know these four facts:
1. It's NOT IN THE BILL no matter what Sean Hannity says.
2. The train doesn't run through Reid's "district" as he is a Senator. Senators don't have districts.
3. The train would run straight through the heavily Republican CA Congressional district 41, seated by Rep. Jerry Lewis, and heavily Republican NV congressional district 2, seated by Rep. John Heller
And it would provide a pathway from the #2 city in this country to the #1 tourist destination. Not exactly a Bridge to Nowhere.
Oh yes, I'd really hate for the president to wash his hands of Afghanistan, especially after all that passionate advocacy I heard you do.
Oh wait, I never heard you do any advocacy.
And, your husband was the president that washed his hands of Afghanistan.
Just one more example of the terrible lack of reality in the White House
This is a great lady, I wish her only to Live long and prosper.
BUSHED!!!!!!!!!
Hey Laura,
Now that you and your idiot husband have a lot of free time, are you planning a vacation to Iraq any time soon ? I would assume not.
I don't want my money given to the welfare people who won't work
and lives off of government........Yes I am wealthy. But I worked damn hard for my money........So stay away from my money welfare people and Obama............
WOW!!! What did Bush do that destroyed the country!!!??? You people need to stop judging...lets see you lead a country with billions of people...who have billions of diff opinions about everything...easy for you guys to talk but did you did something to help?? i dont think so!!! all you guys know its to criticize and judge people!! obama made a lot of promises right? lets see if he can keep those promise in 4 years! PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES!! shut up already im sick of all of you bush haters out there....i wish you guys keep your comments to your self's. I didn't vote for obama and im not saying anything about him. may he fulfill his promises. just because im not a democrat dont mean ima go and hate on all democrats. SO STOP judging. may God forgive you guys.. and hi 5 for Carol.
Oh please!!! They had to borrow furniture? Are they trying to tell us that they are in the same boat as most Americans thanks to that idiot husband of hers? You know how many men and women are not coming back from Iraq? Furniture is the least of their problems.
Get lost all of you has beens! Who cares?
Everybody wants to be mad at Bush well guess what its really all of the indigent poor that are killing the country. We have all know people who take advantage of the system and say nothing to them. It is very easy to point fingers at those that have gone out and made something of themselves.. I vote for team BUSH!
TCM – How did Bush protect us and 911 happened on his watch? Nine months is not a good time to stop something bad from happening. People are blaming Obama and he has only been in office a month.
All those that think Bush is uneducated please stop making those ignorant comments. Bush has an ivy league education. He also was smart enough to get elected, take your money and use it to make him, his family and friends rich, so who is the dumb person!
Thank you.
@ TCM & Bush defenders....
Are you crazy? Obama has done more in a month than Bush has done in 8 years. You have got to be kidding me. You cannot understand our anger for Bush, who has sent this country into a neck breaking spiral into chaos, but spit venom at Obama, who is diligently trying to clean up this mess and make life better for everyone.
Where do you people come from? What the heck are you on?
All of you are such idiots!!!!! Repubs party have become the party for cold-hearted individuals. What is so wrong with extending a helping hand to someone who is in need? Pres. Obama is just trying to help those that regardless of their hard work cannot get on their feet. With this economy it can be any of us tomorrow. The US has become a country of self-serving, greedy people who are heartless. It is not a sense of entitlement, it is helping your fellow man.
Oh how sad, they have no furniture! Why don't they invite some homeless people, (you know the one's W created), to dinner, I'm sure they could use a good meal. I bet they would even sit on the floor, no fancy tables needed!
"I didnt know bush could read. "
I don't know about Bush's reading skills but the Kindle has an audio feature to read books to users. I'm just sayin'
I knew it. He's using a Kindle because he's illiterate!
Well said Jennifer, i agree, i could care less about Laura Bush, im simply angry over the support Bush and his administation had and still seem to have, other then that all this little stuff is just hype. Its definetly depressing to see how divided we are but not surprising, you could see it coming, there really was zero leadership in the last eight years and to see vets ignored and used for campaigning, madoffs destroying the country without any oversight what so ever, our foreign relations deteriorated, job loss, the list goes on....its enough to get a little stressed over, and to see people still defending that, is just sad.
"Laura is the best and she has a GODLY man by her side." ??
LOL!
Oh you religious conservatives...god bless you...
Just remember how popular Ex President Bush was in his first 100 days. Obama will finish his honeymoon and when the hammer falls so will the support. No leader pleases all the people all the time. To lead one has to make the decisions that appear to be best at the time for the nation and long term gains and I believe that Bush and his gang did what they thought was best for the country at the time, They were just wrong. Obama will make some wrong decisions and he has recognizes it by saying that we cannot be sure the stimulus will work.
Bush was a big mistake for the United States. He has cost Jobs, divorces, self inflicted end of life, and slaughter of hundreds . As for their furniture ,. Rooms to go is affording people like the Bushes, no interest for three years. I hope Bush washed his bloody hands before eating.
This is news? Who cares. The real news is what George Bush has done to this country.
My compnay makes awesome high end, antique reproduction furniture including a replica of the Resolute Desk W used to sit behind. Just look up Thomaston Furniture Designs.
The fact that she "forgot" is typical for the Bush's. They just don't care about the country or what's happening to common folk. Good bye and stay out of DC!
