Senator calls Obama 'world’s best salesman of socialism'

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/02/27/art.bocu0227.gi.jpg caption="For the second time in as many days, a prominent Republican has likened Pres. Obama's policies to socialism."]

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Another prominent Republican told the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday that the president’s spending plans are pushing the country to the brink of socialism.

Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, the only member of the senate to earn a perfect rating from the American Conservative Union, called President Obama “the world’s best salesman of socialism” on Friday in describing his prime time speech earlier this week.

DeMint, a fierce opponent of government expansion, told the CPAC crowd that conservatives might have to “take to the streets to stop America’s slide into socialism.”

His remarks comes a day after Mike Huckabee told the conference of conservative activists that “the Union of American Socialist Republics is being born” with the president’s stimulus package.

“Lenin and Stalin would love this stuff,” Huckabee said of the government bailing out financial institutions.

I just think people should study history before they spout off about things they are completely ignorant on. America's (not rebuplicans, democrats, liberals, or conservatives) wasteful and arrogant attitude got us into this mess. We are going to need to tighten our belts and have a little humility if we are going to lead this world away from this economic mess. President Obama did not create this problem...and he cannot fix it. He can only do what he feels will help. So if everyone would stop yelling at each other and go volunteer at a soup kitchen or something else useful maybe we would have a chance to right this ship. None of this bickering is constructive, we need to get off our lazy American butts and stop waiting for someone else to solve our problems.

Obama a socialist? I thought we put that to bed. Let's see he wants energy companies to expand green jobs and new technologies, he will promote private stem cell research to foster new breakthoughs. He wants the PRIVATE sector to build bridges, trains, roads and refit buildings to reduce energy dependance. Since when is it socialism to provide health care education and promote energy independence? That means vitually all countries in the western world are socialist including the Netherlands. They provide health care, child care, education and are on their way to energy independence. Everyone is socialist who believes government is for those who can't help themselves. Hey based on the last 8 years can anyone defend capitalism and even democracy both destroyed by Mr. conservative George Bush. wow. Name calling that's all this is.

This is just more of the same from republicans. They copy Limpbag's rhetoric, pick one lie, then really hammer on it until people start believing it. Hitler's propaganda department would be proud of republican tactics today. Socialism is that lie currently. We are not socialist. Obama's vision of America isn't one of Socialism. This hammering of lies is the reason the republicans have been swept out of power to the fringes of politics.

  7. DeCrazy DeMint

Look at Demint – tight-wad, slicked-back hair – he just looks crooked – kind of like that used car salesman who had that great deal.......and was willing to say anything for the sale.

    DeMint – used rhetoric salesman

So let's see now – let rich people cheat and defraud American citizens to make as much money as they possibly can. Then, watch the entire economy collapse as a result, and millions lose their jobs. Then, complain when the government steps in to try and help people keep their homes, and keep their jobs. Nice. What's the matter, you'll have to buy a 40" TV instead of a home theater? boo hoo hoo.

This country needs a kick in the butt in terms of common decency and morals towards which we may engender fairness and equality, rather than greed and jealousy.

Slick DeMint – I wouldn't trust him with my watch, let alone my future

So why are they saying Obama is a socialist??? hello. why don't you republicans stop drinking the koolaid because no one drinks koolaid. Rev. Huckabee....perhaps you time would be better spent rereading your Bible. I think you missed the part about feed the hungry, cloth the poor, love your neighbor. I would suggest "Good News for Modern Man". It is a great "socialist" text. Might I suggest starting with the Sermon on the Mount. You seem to be stuck in the Old Testament. Most of it tells about the life of a man called Jesus. You have heard of him right?!

The media needs to stop giving the big ol' redneck Republican boys (including Hannity and Limbaugh) a platform. Shut up and go away, y'all! Go on back to the South . . .

Yeah, because deregulation and tax cuts for the wealthy have worked out so well. Ever heard of a thing called income disparity? Ours is equivalent to most third world countries. Look it up.

Even with the daunting problems that the country is facing, the GOP is totally unable to go beyond labelling and name calling.
Their political discourse is at the 4th grade level. Come to think of it, it is not so unrealistic, because it will take at least one generation before the GOP can fool Americans into electing republicans back to power.

The Lord has opposition? How could this be? He is leading us down the road to salvation by putting us tens of trillions of dollars in debt. With the help from the media, how could anyone deny that this is the best for this "crisis". It worked well for G W B, so all Obama had to do was substitute the word "terrorist" with "crisis" and all the sheeple just follow. Just say the magic word "crisis" and the US treasury and Americas wealth is yours to plunder.

It's too bad that Senator DeMint and Mike Huckabee do not have the grace to realize that their party LOST the election! Now they are waving the "FEAR" banner again that the past failed administration used on middle Americans. Instead, it would be nice if they showed patriotism by supporting the new elected administration to get our country moving again. Shameful.

Socialism! R u serious! They are not even giving the man a chance! These Republicans are acting as if this whiole economic meltdown started the day Obama entered into office. Think about who has been in the office for the past 8year... Did you forget about him people??? Obama is just trying to come up with sensible solutions that will be helpful for everyone and to pull people out of the slumps. Its not going to happen by tomorrow! But everytime he comes up with a solution, the conservatives just shut him flat down. Obviously your way of thinking is not helpful because if it were, we wouldn't be in this mess. GIVE THE MAN A CHANCE!

    @ Rapier –

You're wrong. The first 5-6 yrs of Bush's tenure the economy was screaming unemployment was low, and we were safe from terrorism.
Enter Pelosi and the democratically controlled congress....a little over 2 yrs ago....now, the economy's in the toilet, we have racial tensions because you elected a waffle that looks black, has no experience, and really can't identify where he was born......there goes the nation. It wasn't conservatives, idiot, it was liberal bunholes like you, that want "fairness," for all, without anyone having to work...or make their own way....what it is, White Guilt? Or are you one of those that support Obama merely because he's saying he's black?

The average unemployment rate under Bush was under 6%. Secondly the republicans haven't been running the country the past eight years. Nancy Pelosi and Co. have been running it the past two.

Obama, Pelosi and gang will do for the country what liberalism has done to Michigan.

    Stop drinking the MSLSD cool-aid.
