Senator calls Obama 'world’s best salesman of socialism'

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/02/27/art.bocu0227.gi.jpg caption="For the second time in as many days, a prominent Republican has likened Pres. Obama's policies to socialism."]

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Another prominent Republican told the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday that the president’s spending plans are pushing the country to the brink of socialism.

Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, the only member of the senate to earn a perfect rating from the American Conservative Union, called President Obama “the world’s best salesman of socialism” on Friday in describing his prime time speech earlier this week.

DeMint, a fierce opponent of government expansion, told the CPAC crowd that conservatives might have to “take to the streets to stop America’s slide into socialism.”

His remarks comes a day after Mike Huckabee told the conference of conservative activists that “the Union of American Socialist Republics is being born” with the president’s stimulus package.

“Lenin and Stalin would love this stuff,” Huckabee said of the government bailing out financial institutions.

All I have heard from Republicans is criticism and name calling. I would be more inclined to listen to them IF they offered alternative plans. Right now they seem to be the party of sour grapes.

Wow...this rhetoric so reminds me of McCarthyism....but since the conservatives so much want to turn back the clock in the U.S. to the 'good ole days' of the 1950's - when we everyone had such 'equal rights' I guess we shouldn't be surprised.

CMC, spending money doesnt make the govt socialists. Its spending money with strings attached. Obama's stimulus plan not only spends money we don't have, it subjugates the states to the federal govt. The plan grossly explands the role and authoritative power of the federal govt. Explain to me how a more pervasive govt will result in the further protection of our rights and liberties???

This country is in the throws of an economic disaster. Capitalism
coupled with deregulation and greed has failed this country. The
stimulus package comes from the George W. Bush era. He gave away
billions of unanswered dollars of taxpayer money to the very ones that
help send the financial system into disaster. I still don't hear the GOP
idea of how to solve this mess they created !! Only criticism of the ones
trying to come up with a solution to stifle a downward spiral.

Do any of you remeber what happend with Russia or with China or with Canada - did socialism really work????? UH NO Get a clue and figure out that with socialism, the goverment will pretty much tell us what to do for a living, what schools to go to, can we buy a house. They acutally had a list for those wanting a house, first come first serve, and if you were not next in line, the person could not get a house, is this what we really want - how about standing in line for 10 hours to buy a loaf of bread - is this where the US wants to be heading or do we still want to be able to go to the grocery stores, malls and buy what we need. Do we want to have military troops walking the streets, do we want free speech, pay attention people

I couldn't have said it better – Neel.

Give an alternative that would work. Obama was elected and he presented these ideas.

The ugly dialog the Repubs used during the election didn't work than and doesn't work now.

Repubs quit being bullies – think of something that will do good for all American, not just the wealth!

So... Mike, just so you know, we, the people of America, know you're hoping we fail. You're hoping more people lose their jobs, that people take their own lives our of despair. You're hoping this economic mess claims people's lives, so that you can claim Obama's policies did it and you can take back power in 2012. No sacrifice of people other than yourself is too great, right?

The republican party is showing their true colors,,,,,the color is racism. The southern politicians are still fighting the civil war. I am a yankee,,,,,born in Michigan. After my retirement my wife and myself moved to the tidewater portion of Virginia. It did not take long for us to realize that the civil war was still being fought. I did not fight in the civil war,,,,,,nor did my father or his father. Southern people for some reason cannot live in the present.,,,,,,,,they live in the past,,,,,,and i mean the past. Black people are here to stay ,,,,,,the same goes for homosexuals. These same people that are so opposed to our new president,,,,,,maybe someday your own son or daughter may bring home a black inlaw. Stop the bickering,,,,,,America deserves better than what you are expousing.

Finally someone actually acknowledges it. But, of course, most liberals will get angry, say it isn't socialism, and go back to living in la-la-land.

If you're a socialist, why not accept it?

    – BOB, i am a socialist and i can't wait for your high taxes to pay for my child's health care.. there see not everyone is afraid to admit it.

These guys need to stop, the real american people voted and we are tired of the hurray for the rich and to hell with everyone below that level. These are unprecidented times where this contry hasnt been before, yet not a republican 1 can give us any answers for a fix, except give the rich tax breaks. I cant speak for everyone else, but by the way the election went most think the other way.

Funny how they got us into this mess. Ok, here's an idea.

If these politicians represent their people then they shouldn't get a dime of the recovery money and we'll see how long they stay in office.

Anyone who doesn't want the lower taxes can pay more if they don't need the money.

  14. Where is the OUTRAGE when in 2001 GW BUSH gave 1.35 trillion dollars in TAX CUT to the RICH & CORPORATE AMERICA

To the republiklans, "socialism" is the new word for "terrorism"!

The republiklan party and it's group of bigoted & hateful leaders are so out of touch with the american people and are back with their demagoguery of calling people names, whom they despise and are "Unamerican" to their hillybilly sensibilities!

What's new? – They've alienated blacks, hispanics, arabs, moslems, and now calling our beloved president Barack Obama a socialist!

Is this the party of LincReagan or Rush Limbaugh & Sean Hannity?!

****Reagan will be turning in his grave and closing his ears to the words of the political hatemongers*****

I don't think DeMint is so far off.

I only wonder if the sheep who buy the idea that a benovelent big brother is the answer to thier personal problems.

Frankly this budget, bail out and powergrab scares the crap out of me.

Civil wars have started over less.

My only hope is that the American people still belive in personal liberty enough to put a stop to this crap.
